ActionScript :: Flex - Get An Instance's "memory Location"?
Aug 27, 2009
FlexBuilder's debugger will show you the "memory location" (or, I can only assume, something roughly analagous) of any in-scope instance:
But I'd like to get this information in code (sort of like Python's id function), so I could very easily trace how objects move through out the system. For example, I might have:
trace("Returning", id(foo));
Then somewhere else I could use:
trace("Using", id(foo));
To make sure both bits of code are dealing with the same instance.
Now, I know that many AS classes implement the IUID interface... But there are also a bunch of classes which don't (plain old arrays and objects, for example), so that wouldn't solve my problem.
I realize that I could also wrap objects in an ObjectProxy, but that would be less than ideal as well.

I have an FPS monitor running and notice that I am getting choppiness here and there, bringing my game from 40 to 27 fps and back and forth at certain stages. I have an idea of where it is happening, but do not know for sure. I looked up quite a few memory monitors but haven't found anything decent yet. Is there a memory monitor that allows you to see the memory leaked and find its location? If not, how about just he memory leaked?

i'm generating a few movieclip functions from an array that relate to an mc that's on the stage. However, in the mc.onRelease function, i can't seem to get the _root.filename = *** .txt to match the name of said mc instance. Instead i get a really long location for the mc on the stage Any ideas how i can get round this?
Code:
var machines:Array = [unimatic,circularSaw,heatpress,embroidery,lineBender,laser,mugpress,vacuumF,linisher,profileCutter,pillarDrill,novamill,compactRouter];
for(var i:Number = 0; i < machines.length; i++)

I have a question regarding AS3 memory management. Supposing I created an instance variable for a Class, in this case or type Sound:
public class SoundStore extends Sprite{
var s:Sound;
Then within various class functions I referenced this variable multiple times, each time I wanted to load in a new sound:
s = new Sound();
Am I correct in thinking that each time I created a new Sound I would be overwriting the previous allocated memory?

Does the original instance get deleted or will it remain in memory? If it does, how do I remove it properly?

I wrote an application in flash AS3, and when I trace from flash the total memory usage of the total application is only about 9MB, But at the same time Task Manager Shows the memory usage as 110MB. Around 100MB difference.Flash Trace Method System.totalMemory difference of the Trace from the Beginning of the application to end of the application.

I'm getting this error with one chat application. According to
[URL]
..I should "Check the JavaScript runtime size for this application in the configuration file". By default it was set to 1024. Any attempt to increase it causes FMS not to start again. This problem just came out of the blue. This same chat app has been in operation with no trouble for about 10 months. I restart the server machine on which it resides before each new chat session.

However, it won't open in the browser in a different location. I pasted the html code in a web page but it doesn't work there nor opens in the browser in a differnet location from where it was originally published and saved. Why is that?

There is a Flex app with 7 main views. And there is a memory issue when navigating between views.All these views were in a ViewStack, but due to some involving 3D objects I assumed it was too much to have it all in the display list. I'm now clearing all children from the stack and adding/removing them when needed. This gave a small performance increase, but still becomes unresponsive with use. The strange thing is, with this and the original method, the CPU climbs with use but eventually levels out somewhere. Now I'm creating new instances of each screen when they are navigated to and setting the previous variable to null. Now it looks like CPU is spiking when the view is created, but leveling out to something much much lower than it was. This felt like progress, but now the available memory keeps climbing where it wasn't before....
My understanding was calling remove child or remove all children would mark the object for deletion when the garbage collector next ran. I can't see any other references to the instance. My code is along the lines of [code]I have a function for each button to add a new instance like the above.The only thing I can see and feel silly asking but need confirmation, is each view extends a class called "Screen", this class contains a singleton reference to some core components.[code]Would this trick the garbage collector into thinking it was still needed? General advice on clearing Objects from the memory pool would awesome!!! I've never needed to analyze the Flash Player in such depth.I think it's an error with sound drivers, removing all sound and shes purring like a kitten. Works on my machine fine with windows XP, but not on the touch pad the application is crashing on with windows 7 (unsure of the drivers looking into them now) Now I'm thinking its not the drivers, tried 3 different versions, all with no improvement. I did discover the sound was fading in and out with the TweenLite lib. Doesn't look like there are any memory leaks in TweenLite as it works fine on other machines. Just the use of volumeEasingFunction seems to consume increasing amounts of CPU until it freaks out. It is crappy hardware running windows 7, which doesn't help.

I have a Flex 4.6 web game which displays 2 Lists with virtual layouts with 2 custom item renderers. The renderers consist mainly of BitmapImages displaying user avatars + few Labels.
The Lists are being updated often over TCP socket with gzipped JSON data. I merge that data into 2 ArrayCollections serving as dataProviders for the Lists. This seems to work well, the Lists do not flicker and are updated correctly (I've monitored debug traces a lot to get it right).

I'm working on a build script in the Flash Builder version of Eclipse. This build script needs to import launch configuration .launch files into the user's workspace. However there doesn't seem to be an available ANT var for determining the workspace location. While stepping through the available vars with intellisense I noticed that ${osgi.instance.area} does point to my current workspace but when I tried to echo it back in a running ant script it just spat out "${osgi.instance.area}" and not the path.

I have successfully generated my web service proxies using the FlexBuilder menus. This particular web service has an internal (or incorrect) "location" specified in its WSDL. This means that when I go to make an actual method call, it fails because the DNS name specified in the location field is wrong. (It shows as "aborted" in fire bug).
How do I set the location attribute on the service object?
update:
The field that needs to be changed is listed below. It is called "WSDL- ndpoint." So the question is: How do I do this programmatically given the generated web service object (the one that extends WebServiceWrapper)?
<annotation name="ServiceConfig">

valueObjects

http://eoc7/eoc7/api.asmx

Does creating a new instance of an Object that uses an identical name to an older instance, delete the previous instance? Or should the original instance be deleted first? The code uses a ridiculous amount of XML vars. Isn't it less memory intensive to parse the XML and save the properties to an Object, and then delete the XML Object, rather than keep the XML Object around and reference it's child nodes directly? Is it better form to break up a huge XML file (>600lines/3200vars) into smaller chunks?

I have built an image cache which is an ArrayCollection containing images. I have built functionality so that the cache can hold a max of 250 images. However, the images can be of a different size, so it's better to limit the total memory size of all images in the ArrayCollection. How I can get the total memory size of an ArrayCollection without looping through all the items in the ArrayCollection?

I have a swf which, for some reason, has four RemoteObjects pointing to the same ChannelId, but they are listing that channel as being at two different spots. In four of the five RemoteObjects, everything behaves as expected, but in the fourth (WidgetService), the version on dev is switching from dev.context.root toloc.context.root. To make matters more confusing, it only does this on the dev server (QA and production are fine, as are local builds).The relevant information from the config files follows:
#This is from build.properties, which is used by Ant
#to build the swf on the server
flex.sdk.dir = /path/to/sdk/flex_sdk_3.2.0.3958
