Actionscript 3.0 :: Static Reference To Document Class Instance?

May 3, 2010

What I'm looking for is a way to reference the document class instance, to be able to access functions and variables that other classes need. I'm currently doing it with this little piece of code I found on some blog or forum.

Code: Select all// This is in the document class
private static var _instance:DocClass;    // I have tried setting this to public and accessing it directly as well
public static function get instance():DocClass { return _instance; }

[code]....

This seems to work as it should in Flash CS4, but when I try to run the same code in CS5 I get the following error message:

Code: Select allC:UsersImpenDocumentsMy DropboxFlash Project\_SPELTankGameMenuShop.as, Line 238   1195: Attempted access of inaccessible method globalFunction through a reference with static type DocClass.

Access An Instance Reference To Document Class From Stage's Timeline?

Dec 30, 2009

Is there a way to get an instance reference to the document class to call a method of it from the stage's timeline?I see that here's a possible solution: using a singletonOther solution I though of is using stage.getChildAt( 0 ) but it's not very nice.Is there an 'official' instance reference? because the document class is obviously instantiated at startup, but is that instance accessible in any way without having to use a custom solution like the ones mentioned?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Reference Main Document Class From Document Class Of Loaded Swf

May 7, 2011

I have a FLA (say Main.FLA) document class with a child MovieClip on the stage: into the child MovieClip I load other swf files: each of the files contains its own Document Class (every swf is a somewhat independent application, say quizzes and so on).For some reason I must use the Main document class to store data (scores or so) from the child swfs loaded into the Main swf. HOW do I reference the Main class? I can't find a way.[code]and dispatch an Event this way from the loaded swf document class to the Main class:[code]Now, first of all I don't know if this could even work. Secondly, I tried to make it work by adding an event listener to my Main class but id did not work.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Sending A Class Instance Reference To A Different Class Instance?

Apr 14, 2011

I'm creating a little game - The player controls a character that follows the mouse. Pigs run away from the player, and the player has to get them all into a pen. To make the game a little more difficult I'm trying to add an enemy - wolves, that attempt to perform a 'hunt' method every x seconds. This method sends a reference of the wolf instance to Main (my document class) and Main then loops through the pigs on stage to see if there's any nearby. Now as far as I know this works - my problem is I'm unsure how to send the pig instance reference back to the wolf that called the hunt method, so it can then 'target' the pig, and then attempt to pounce on it.

This is my Wolf class:

Code:
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.Event;

Actionscript 3 :: Flash CS5 Reference A Display Object From A Class Other Than The Document Class

Jul 28, 2011

Using Flash CS5 Professional I have created a symbol, dragged it onto the stage, and given it an instance name of GreenLight1. If I want to make this visible from the document class, I can simply do the GreenLight1.visible=true; and poof it's good to go when I test the file. As long as I stay in the document class I am good to go, but now I'm trying to move to another class and hitting ALL kinds of trouble just trying to get Flash to allow me to access this simple object. All I am looking to do is have this GreenLight1 go invisible (visible=false) when a certain condition occurs in this new class and Flash just won't let me access GreenLight1 at all. Things I've tried thus far:

stage is passed to the class and is referenced by _stage and is working just fine when I do _stage.addchild or anything like that. So I have tried "_stage.GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property GreenLight1 not found on flash.display.Stage and there is no default value." My document class extends Sprite, so I figured I'd try the root function. So I tried "Sprite(root).GreenLight1.visible=false;" and I get "1119: Access of possibly undefined property GreenLight1 through a reference with static type flash.display:Sprite." I tried to create the Resource class as described therein. To which I came across the same problem that I started with in that it doesn't know what GreenLight1 is to begin with so I got "1120: Access of undefined property GreenLight1." Here is my code for Resource.as (am I supposed to pass something to this class from the document class?)

ActionScript 3.0 :: Direct Access Of Document Class Static Var?

Sep 19, 2009

I often write apps in flash where I wrap all the display elements into one parent display object container (not the stage). Let this parent container be mc_world for example. I declare this in my Document class (Main) as:

ActionScript Code:
public static var mc_world:MovieClip;

Since this container is unique and often times needs to be referenced from various classes in the project (that are not its children) I find myself often doing Main.mc_world across my project to access this container.

Is it bad practice to directly access static members of the Document class throughout my project? Are there any simple alternatives? I don't want to dispatch events every time I need to access mc_world. And using a singleton class doesn't seem all that different from the Document Class (which only has one instance right?).

Actionscript 3 :: Reference A Class Instance From Another Class Instance?

Dec 10, 2010

Quick question. I have been Googling this all morning, but it's either not there, or else written in a way that doesn't register. I am inclined to believe the latter, as this seems like it should be something completely trivial to me. I made a small Flash file using AS 3.0, and this is the first time I've really been able to stick to the OOP way of doing things and not hack together a mix of stuff from the timeline to get around not having everything work in the classes.

So I'd like to keep it that way, but one thing is eluding me: I can't call a method of an instance of another class (than the one I'm calling from) without resorting to "DocumentClass(root).instanceName.method." Intuition tells me there has to be a better way of doing this (like, without having to reference the document class every time I call another class instance's function; and CERTAINLY without having to use the word "root" - that just seems so Flash 5 to me. Does anybody have a better way of doing this that they can share?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Stage Reference In Static Class?

Feb 17, 2009

I have a static utility class that must have a reference to the stage, and I'm not sure what is the best option for me to get the stage inside my class...

I've thought of these options:Pass in as a parameter of the function Have a static variable I can set to the stage I don't like either of these because they are ugly.

What methods can you suggest for me to get a reference to the stage in my static class?

ActionScript 1/2 :: Reference Static Class Vars Via A String?

Feb 5, 2010

I am trying to set the value of some static vars but I need to reference the class with a string rather than a proper constructor. In AS3 I can do this with:

var ref:Class = getDefinitionByName(classDefinitionAsString) as Class;
ref[varNameAsString] = newValue;

I can't find an equivelant approach that will work in AS2 though. I have tried:

var ref:Object = new [classDefinitionAsString];
ref[varNameAsString] = newValue;

This seems to just create an Object and as the vars that I am trying to access are static I don't really want to be using 'new' I just want to reference the vars.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Imported Class Reference And Static Variables

Jun 8, 2010

I'm trying to make methods available like so:
ActionScript Code:
MyClass.myFunc();
Instead of
ActionScript Code:
var myVar:MyClass = new MyClass();
myVar.myFunc();

I know that to do so I need to declare the functions/variables/constants as static:
ActionScript Code:
package MyPackage {
public class MyClass extends Object {
public static function myFunc():void {
} public function MyClass() {
[Code] .....

When I try to access the static function through the full reference (i.e trace(MyPackage.MyClass.myFunc);), it works, while trace(MyClass.myFunc); returns undefined. This contradicts what I've read in tutorials and posts on the Internet. They all use the short syntax, not the full path.

ActionScript 3.0 :: AddChild To Stage Instance From Static Class?

Nov 4, 2011

I need to know when an element is added to the stage (using main document class). So i use :

Code:
public override function addChild(__child:DisplayObject):DisplayObject{
super.addChild(__child);
trace("child added");
return __child;
}

Which works fine. I also use a static class, to which i pass the stage using :

Code:
public static function setStage(__stage:Stage):void{
_stage = __stage;
}

But if i add to the stage (_stage) a MovieClip from the static class, my "real" stage doesn't seem to get that something was added. So i guess _stage !== stage.
So why is this happening, why is _stage not getting the methods of stage ?

Flex :: Difference Between Class Reference And Class Instance?

Jun 28, 2010

Given that both of these calls to getQualifiedClassName return the same thing (mx:Label), how would one go about programatically differentiating between an instance of a class and a reference to the class...

var lab1:Label=new Label();
var lab2:Class=Label;
var qcn1:String=getQualifiedClassName(lab1);
var qcn2:String=getQualifiedClassName(lab2);

In other words, how could I know that lab1 is of type Label, while lab2 is type "Class". typeof() simply returns "object" for both... getQualifiedClassName returns "mx.controls::Label" for both...

I'm trying to reference the document class from inside a MovieClip that's dynamically added to the stage. I'm using this script:
Code:
documentClass(root).someVar;
Where "documentClass" is the name of my class (duh).

This works fine, however -- when I move the class file into a folder (and make all the necessary revisions to point to the file) this doesn't work (everything else still does). I get a "not found, possibly undefined method" error. The class name is technically com.documentClass now, how do I point to that? The file is an Adobe Air file.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Accessing Instance Of Document Class

Jun 5, 2009

I have a really peculiar problem that relates to the old question of how to best access the instance of the document class from a different class. I usually add a 'this' as parameter when I create an instance of another class inside the document class. Then I save this 'this' in a class property of the type 'Object'. It usually works just fine but lately I have encountered a really bizzarr error.

When my movie first starts I have to load 2 xml-Files. I do that in another class - that calls upon the document class instance when it is finished. I use 4 methods for that, each calling the other, when it is finished.
(like one doing loader.load(urlRequest),
then loader.addEventListener
(Event.Complete, nexthandler) and so on

Now, when I call back to my document class from the last of these 4 methods it works just fine. But when I try skipping the first two methods (since I now need only one xml-File) - my try/catch-statement suddenly complains: TypeError: Error #1010! Like it needed more time to establish the instance of the document class or something similar strange.
