Flex :: Getting A Static Instance Of A Class (singleton) By Using GetDefinitionByName

Mar 25, 2011

I have a ManagerClass with a Singleton implementation inside, I get the instance by calling ManagerClass.getInstance().

Can I get that same instance by just having the class name as a string? I have tried something like:

var theInstance:* = getDefinitionByName("ManagerClass").getInstance as Class;
theInstance.doTrace(); // I get a 1009 error here

ActionScript 3.0 :: Static Class Can't Replace Singleton Design Pattern

Jan 1, 2010

I am not able to understand, why a static class cannot replace a Singleton design pattern .

Cannot a static class, can be used to ensure, the class is never/once only, instantiated. Because that is the facility "static" key words provide , however it doesnot allow instantiation, but that is much similar to the limitation of instantiation once only.

Flex :: Static Constants Return Instance Of Specific Class?

Apr 29, 2010

I have a class ErrorMessages which holds all my error messages as static constants. So I could access them like ErrorMessages.PASSWORD_INVALID or ErrorMessage.PASSWORD_TOO_SHORT. I want to know if it is possible to have separate classes that hold subset of these constants and access them like ErrorMessages.PASSWORD.INVALID or ErrorMessages.PASSWORD.TOO_SHORT, etc. This way I can more structured static structure and makes it much easier to use autocomplete. I tried few different ways and couldn't figure out if this was possible..

Is there any convention like the class name should eb Singleton or it should extend any other class.

How many Singleton class can a project have?

Can anyone say the real time usage of a Singleton class?

I am planning to keep my components label texts in a Singleton class... Is it a good approach.

Actionscript 3.0 :: Static Reference To Document Class Instance?

May 3, 2010

What I'm looking for is a way to reference the document class instance, to be able to access functions and variables that other classes need. I'm currently doing it with this little piece of code I found on some blog or forum.

Code: Select all// This is in the document class
private static var _instance:DocClass;    // I have tried setting this to public and accessing it directly as well
public static function get instance():DocClass { return _instance; }

[code]....

This seems to work as it should in Flash CS4, but when I try to run the same code in CS5 I get the following error message:

Code: Select allC:UsersImpenDocumentsMy DropboxFlash Project\_SPELTankGameMenuShop.as, Line 238   1195: Attempted access of inaccessible method globalFunction through a reference with static type DocClass.

ActionScript 3.0 :: AddChild To Stage Instance From Static Class?

Nov 4, 2011

I need to know when an element is added to the stage (using main document class). So i use :

Code:
public override function addChild(__child:DisplayObject):DisplayObject{
super.addChild(__child);
trace("child added");
return __child;
}

Which works fine. I also use a static class, to which i pass the stage using :

Code:
public static function setStage(__stage:Stage):void{
_stage = __stage;
}

But if i add to the stage (_stage) a MovieClip from the static class, my "real" stage doesn't seem to get that something was added. So i guess _stage !== stage.
So why is this happening, why is _stage not getting the methods of stage ?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Global Variables: Singleton Versus Static Vars?

May 29, 2009

pros and cons of either using a Singleton that enforces only one instantiation of itself, versus creating one common class with static vars which can be accessed by all other classes that import it?

In my testing, importing but never instantiating works fine. I can even change the value of one of the variables and then have another class see that changed value later on in the program.

If I *know* I will never actually create an instance of my Global class using the New command (but will instead just reference the variables using the class's name), then why should I need to make it a strict Singleton?

Actionscript 3 :: Bindable Getter Function Of Singleton Instance Never Being Called In A Data Binding Expression

Oct 26, 2011

I have a singleton class that looks something roughly like this (only with more bindable public properties):

public class Session extends EventDispatcher
{
private var _Id:String;
private static const _instance:Session = new Session( SingletonLock );
private static const SESSID_CHANGED:String = 'SessionIdChanged';

[Code]...

The abnormal behavior I'm discovering is that the event listeners registered through registerOnSessionChange are indeed being called when the session Id changes, but the MXML data binding expression is not updating. I've tried all combinations of dispatching the event during the capture phase, and making it not cancelable, but to no avail. My understanding of [Bindable (event= ...)] is that the MXML should update the url string when the event specified is dispatched, so what am I doing wrong or misunderstanding?

Note: I realize there are lots of different ways of doing the singleton pattern in Actionscript, but unless the way I am doing it is actually causing my problem somehow,

Actionscript 3 :: Singleton Class Vs LocalConnection Class

Aug 14, 2010

I have a Main class loading 2 SWF (loader and viewer, also with document classes). They need to share a double buffer with content, of course, filled by loader and showed by viewer I was thinking to use the LocalConnection class but after a suggestion from PatrickS now I'm evaluating the possibility of a Singleton Class. I've never used this pattern in AS and must confess I'm rather biased against it.

But in this particular case I guess it'll be useful. By the way, a little bit surprised reading in the gskinner blog 2 implementations examples. So, knowing this subject is an endless war like the Mac vs PC one Take into account:

1. AIR desktop application running 24x7 during some months in a high-end Windows PC. No user interaction

2. High performance code is a must because content loaded are full HD images My other concern is about memory leaks

I need to get Class object in my RSL, which is defined in one of the modules. ActionScript 3.0 :: Using Singleton In A Sub-class?

Oct 30, 2009

In the Singleton design pattern you can throw a runtime error if the instance has already been created. But this doesn't work when your singleton class extends another class and has to call super() in its constructor, because (for some reason) you cannot call super() if you've already called throw(), or in fact, you cannot compile code that has a potential call to throw() (for example, in an IF statement) that comes BEFORE that call to super().

Actionscript 3 :: Overriding Public Method In Dynamically Loaded Class And GetDefinitionByName()

Aug 22, 2010

I have two SWFs: main.swf and external.swf. main.swf needs to access some methods in external.swf, so it loads external.swf into itself and uses getDefinitionByName("package.Class") to access the class and one of its methods:

var ExternalClass = getDefinitionByName("package.Class") as Class;
var ClassInstance = new ExternalClass();
var NeededFunction:Function = ClassInstance["NeededFunction"] as Function;
var response:String = NeededFunction(param);

Now, I need to extend the functionality of NeededFunction (which is a public method)... I know it's possible to override public methods, but how would I go about this with a dynamically loaded class?

I was thinking I could do something like this, but it doesn't work:

var ClassInstance["NeededFunction"] = function(param1:uint):String {
var newString = "Your number is: "+param1.toString(); //New functionality
return newString;
}

Flex :: Difference Between Class Reference And Class Instance?

Given that both of these calls to getQualifiedClassName return the same thing (mx:Label), how would one go about programatically differentiating between an instance of a class and a reference to the class...

var lab1:Label=new Label();
var lab2:Class=Label;
var qcn1:String=getQualifiedClassName(lab1);
var qcn2:String=getQualifiedClassName(lab2);

In other words, how could I know that lab1 is of type Label, while lab2 is type "Class". typeof() simply returns "object" for both... getQualifiedClassName returns "mx.controls::Label" for both...

ActionScript 3.0 :: Static Class Needs A Non-static Function

Nov 22, 2009

Alright, so I have a class that is linked (via the linkage panel) to a scrollbox class. I'll paste the class here:[code]Ignoring the formatting, the commented out functions are the ones causing the issue. Adobe says that it's a static class and I can't use non-static functions. The way I wanted to use it was:

1. Call the page button generating function above.

2. In the main code in my program is this line:scrollbox.setClickFunction(historyContent.generate Page);So when the buttons that are supposed to be generated are clicked, the scrollbox class can call the History pages generatePage function and pass it which page to show. (I did this because there was a lot of text and a limit on how much would display, so small chunks sounded logical).

3. In the onClick function (which I haven't finished yet because the rest wont work), when you click one of the buttons it calls the set function. Its that simple.
