Professional :: Access Timeline Variable From Static Class / Singleton?
Nov 3, 2010How can I access a timeline variable from a static class / singleton?

View 14 RepliesI have a ManagerClass with a Singleton implementation inside, I get the instance by calling ManagerClass.getInstance().
Can I get that same instance by just having the class name as a string? I have tried something like:
var theInstance:* = getDefinitionByName("ManagerClass").getInstance as Class;
theInstance.doTrace(); // I get a 1009 error here
I am not able to understand, why a static class cannot replace a Singleton design pattern .
Cannot a static class, can be used to ensure, the class is never/once only, instantiated. Because that is the facility "static" key words provide , however it doesnot allow instantiation, but that is much similar to the limitation of instantiation once only.
I'm currently working on a particle system for a game that I recently started development on, but I've hit a snag: I have a class particlecontainer that tells each particle what to do on enterframe, and which contains each particle as a child. I also have a class (mischandler) which has a static array that contains all current particles, as well as another static array that is a buffer to remove particles from the particlecontainer. Whenever a particle "dies", it calls a function which adds it to the buffer array in mischandler. However, when I try to access this buffer array from the particlecontainer class it does not recognize it as having any elements. If this is unclear here's a simpler explanation:
particlecontainer tells a particle to do it's enterframe function particle calls die() and adds itself to the removebuffer inside mischandler particle container tries to access mischandler.removebuffer but removebuffer has no elements Strangely, the particle can access the removebuffer perfectly fine and sees all the elements in it.
I'm kind off oblivious as to what I'm doing wrong here... I have two classes: - Alley - AlleyCat

I realize this is kind of an odd issue, but I am wondering if there's any way to get Flash to allow me to access a class's static functions using a class variable that points to the class. Example:I create a class called FooClass that has a static function named fooI then create a variable of type Class that points to it
Code:
var class:Class = Class(getDefinitionByName("FooClass"));
However, when I try to call foo() using the variable, it errors saying the function

pros and cons of either using a Singleton that enforces only one instantiation of itself, versus creating one common class with static vars which can be accessed by all other classes that import it?
In my testing, importing but never instantiating works fine. I can even change the value of one of the variables and then have another class see that changed value later on in the program.
If I *know* I will never actually create an instance of my Global class using the New command (but will instead just reference the variables using the class's name), then why should I need to make it a strict Singleton?
I'm trying to change a static variable in the class's constructor. At the start I have:
public static var mainReference:Main;
public static var timerReference:Timer;
public var timer:Timer = new Timer(1000);
This is so my static functions can access main and timer. At Main's constructor I have:
mainReference = this;
timerReference = timer;
The problem is, the first gives no error when I compile it, but the second tells me Access of undefined property (timerReference).
I've summarized my issue in the following [code]...
1119: Access of possibly undefined property mc through a reference with static type Class.
I'm trying to fade in a button when my flv finishes, but I get this error: Access of possibly undefined property COMPLETE through a reference with static type ClassThis is timeline code. I don't know if that matters. I'm sure this is more simple than I'm making it, but I've looked at it too long.
ActionScript Code:
btnContinue.setStyle("textFormat", btnformat);
btnContinue.useHandCursor = true;
btnContinue.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btnContinueHandler);

I often write apps in flash where I wrap all the display elements into one parent display object container (not the stage). Let this parent container be mc_world for example. I declare this in my Document class (Main) as:
ActionScript Code:
public static var mc_world:MovieClip;
Since this container is unique and often times needs to be referenced from various classes in the project (that are not its children) I find myself often doing Main.mc_world across my project to access this container.
Is it bad practice to directly access static members of the Document class throughout my project? Are there any simple alternatives? I don't want to dispatch events every time I need to access mc_world. And using a singleton class doesn't seem all that different from the Document Class (which only has one instance right?).
I have a set of classes that I've been using in one Flex program (Classroom). I just created new project and referenced the source path of the first program's com directory in its build path.
When I do an import, import com.cade.comm.CADEports;, everything looks good. When I use a variable in the code, CADEports.gotComm = true;, it still looks good. However, when I try to run it, I get an 1120 error that says "access of undefinded property...".
In the main program:
Flex Build Path -> Source path = ${DOCUMENTS}/Classroom/src/com
import com.cade.comm.CADEports;
...
CADEports.gotComm = true; // compile error here although when you type CADEports. it shows the gotComm variable!
[Code].....
Why does this work in the original program but not the second?
Why static method cant access private properties in the same class?
View 1 RepliesHow can I replace
public function Mainclass()

Calculations.getDistance(5,9,4,2);

I'm not lazy (lying? :p), but I use the class more than 20 times, and it looks better if I replace al these long classnames.
Error: Access of undefined method getStatus through reference with a static type Class.
Here's what's happening in the code. I'm trying to create a User class that is instantiated at the start of my app. I want the User class to have properties like mainStatus, with helper methods like setStatus etc. Pretty simple.
so on my HardDisk I have my flash_working folder with all my flash projects. I created my class file/package under the directory com.mypackage

That's all the code I have.
If I try to access the public var mainStatus through user.mainStatus that gives a similar error saying:
Error: Access of undefined property mainStatus through reference with a static type Class.
button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, produce);
function produce(Event:MouseEvent):void

I have an actionscript class with a static member variable defined.
public class A
{
public static var x:int;
}
When I try to access it from different parts in my code I don't get the same value in each spot.
A.x
I am accessing the variable in different modules that are loaded, so they are all in their own separate .swf file.
So I have a movieclip named runman_mc and I'm just trying to make it so when I press the up arrow, his y will decrease. I keep getting an error code 1119 If there's anymore info you need, I'd be more than glad to post it. EDIT: I just had to name the class runman_mc and everything worked

But the same error keeps showing up, related to the var t1 and var t2 lines: Access of possible undefined property text through a reference with static type class What should I do? I already tried removing the String indication, trade : by =,

In the following code (thoroughly debugged) the first case (1) in the switch is met and a new instance of BannerSingle is assigned to retVal (the return value). Unfortunately, while the second case (2) is never met, the assignment therein to retVal takes place and I can't compile. When I comment out the assignment to retVal for "case 2:" everything works fine.
I've tried using an if/else instead and I still get the same odd behavior. Also tried a number of solutions involving separate variables, etc.
package fl {
import fl.IBanner;
import fl.Banner;

I have 3 swfs, and let's label them MovieA, MovieB, and MovieC. MovieB is a child of MovieA, and MovieC is a child of MovieB. So the hierarchy goes like this: MovieA -> MovieB -> MovieC. Each of these movies have their own document class, so they are each essentially a class extending MovieClip.
Now I have this other external class which contains only static variables. Let's call this class "TestClass" and let's say one of its static variables is called "testVar". So in MovieB's document class, I imported TestClass and set testVar = "hello world". In MovieC's document class, I imported TestClass and traced TestClass.testVar. When I publish and run MovieB, testVar is successfully traced as "hello world". Now when I publish and run MovieA, testVar is traced as undefined.
I'm trying to create a timer event to delay the instantiation of my movie clip on the stage but I keep getting the error: 1119: Access of possibly undefined property Timer through a reference with static type Class I'm confused with how to proceed. I thought Timer was a term already in the AS3 library, so how can it be undefined?

i am making an edutainment game using flash cs5, im really new at using flash, in fact we never yet tackle it at school, but i insist on learning about it.it my codes, i encountered this error
C:UsersacerDesktopJikanLibraryMain.as, Line 16 1119: Access of possibly undefined property Click through a reference with static type Class.
this is the code i used in my program
package
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;[code].....
since im really new at flash, i really dont know what went wrong with my codes, it was working a while ago before i put the mouse event.
I am trying to set up a situation where a user types a date into a textbox on the main swf file and then clicks submit. At that point the movie loads an external swf with a dynamic textbox in it that displays the text stored from the variable in the main timeline. How do I made it so that loaded movie can access that that info?
View 3 RepliesI have a movie clip I'm duplicating.
This movie clip is only one frame long and has a couple variables and functions in an actions layer on that first frame.
When I duplicate the movie clip I can't access either the variables on the timeline or the functions.
MovieClipA
var blee
var blah
var tempClip:MovieClip = MovieClipA.duplicateMovieClip('createdClip', 100);
trace(tempClip.blee) // This comes back undefined.
Is it not possible to retain the variables and functions inside a movie clip when it gets duplicated?
I know you can define the variables and functions after the duplication but I'd like to be able to have them almost like class attributes / methods for when a new clip is duplicated.
I can not get the Preloader.PreloaderBar.scaleX=loaded; to work. I get the error 1119: Access of possibly undefined property PreloaderBar through a reference with static type Class.

I created a movieclip called holder in my Stage and I name it, inside them i put a variable called
name = "whatever"
Now I can't access the variable from root timeline, I try this:
trace(holder.name);
The result gives me undefined! what mean this?
I would like to store the value from combobox or text area-MovieClip in MyClass and then I'd like to read this from another frame in *.fla file only this :) have you another code? what can I write in frame 2 Miclass and frame 3
View 1 RepliesI have two custom classes in the same package - sGallery and vChange - within sGallery how can I call a function thats inside vChange?

I have a site with ScrollPanes, that are calling a Class on what to display. (so the movieclip that I want displayed in the ScrollPane has a Class name.) Within that movieclip (webScroll) that is being displayed in the scrollpane, I have 2 other movieclips (web1 & web2), with unique instance names and eventlisteners targeting those instances. when I preview my site, i get this error: 1119: Access of possibly undefined property web2 through a reference with static type Class.
