I want to know the length of a xml. From a xml file I can make it work. In this case it's a database that generates the xml. So it is a URL, not a Xml. How can I make this work?

Let's say I have array foo and a positive integer y, where foo.length > y.I want to remove elements from foo so that foo.length becomes y (or very close to it).Also, I need to preserve the first and last element of foo. The indices of the removed elements must be spaced apart as equally as possible. Foo can be sliced, or it can be used to create a new array.
Example: if foo = [a,b,c,d,e,f,g,1,2,3,4,5] and y = 6, then trimmedfoo could be [a,c,e,g,2,4,5] or maybe [a,c,e,2,4,5], but not [a,c,e,g,2,4] because the last element of foo is missing.
Lines and polygons generated from a database..possible ? we have done so, that one can have e.g. spots populate a map in Flash with their positions coming from an xml feed database. The map having been drawn in Adobe/macromedia Freehand then imported into Flash.If we wish to show areas, e.g. development sites, can those areas likewise be shown from a database, perhaps the points that form the edge of the area being indicated by eastings and northings co-ordinates held in the database ? If someone alters a co-ordinate, the area then changes shape without being 'drawn' or edited using the usual tools.What of fills and alpha values, can they be controlled from a database ? If we wish to show traffic flow by having a line get fatter, can line width be altered via a database ?
how Flash reads the PHP coding which was generated from the MySQL database.Though, I was wondering if anyone can help me with this task and/or clear stuff up. All I want to do is grab a single video file, when on the video.php page. So, the video.php will have the parameter, video.php?id=____ and than the PHP coding in the header will grab the database info for that video. Though, do I have to create a separate page for the flash to grab that information?Like, I notice that for Flash to grab that info, PHP needs to set it up like so:

and ect. Though, do I have to echo this part out, or do I have to send that PHP info and create a page from it, than have flash grab the information from that 2nd page?
im trying to use array.length to get the total indexs of the array, before running a loop on all of thoes indexs when i attempt to do this(i added a few extra things for the sake of debugging and understanding)

this problem is blowing my mind i have a for loop that i want to go through my entire array but it seems to not be counting the last element in the arraay!
and the last line of code it spits out is "83 84" meaning that there are 84 items in the array but it only ran through to 83...i dont understand why its doing this.
I'm working with tons of array generated from a XML. How should I go about creating a search function that will be able to search and retrieve a particular nod from the array. Sth to do with .toLowerCase() and getIndexOf? The search function should be able to search and retrieve any text that contain the letter/letters... not the whole word. Like for example if user enter "gre", it should retrieve results containing "great" and so on.

I need a way to read the length of my array, automatically create that many frames in the main.fla and read each screen from my array and display it accordingly on each frame. How to do this?
E.g.. In A.xml, I calculated 10 screens, so Ii need to create 10 frames for A.xml....and in my B.xml, I have 25 screens, there Iit should create 25 frames.
I've got some coding to create buttons into an array, and on press of these buttons the function should remove something from another array and remove the last one of the line, so far the coding is working for the first removal, however thereafter the other buttons stay there I think it's to do with the line in bold but I cant put my finger on what's wrong with it! The trace's I've set look plausible...

I like to use array.length in my for loop to keep my code cleaner to read. Is there any huge downside to this? For example will it speed up things greatly if i store the length in a var one time?

I have this code working which has an XML file. This is the code for XML menu(no drop down) for website , i am working on, but i wonder when i traced the value of both arr2 & arr1 it returns 0, although i pushed the value.[code]
I've tried to generate movieclips dynamically the method I have used does the following: Uses a loop runs depending on how many movieclips I want to generate e Each time the loop cycles it creating a new movieclip instance Adds the new movieclip to an array Uses method addChild to put moveclip on the stage then draws a rectangle begins fill ends fill Adds it to that movieclip
I then use a conditional statement checking if the movieclip is the first item in the array if so it sets the current MovieClips x and y position to a chosen value. the first movieclip is used for a starting point to align the rest of the generated movieclips to. If not the movieclips x and y position are set to the previous array items x and y position + current movieclips width or height + the gap I would like them to have. Then the cycle repeats. I've coded this using timeline code and it works fine the shapes appear on the stage no errors. I tried to move this code off the timeline to an as file and the code has no errors but when run I just don't see the objects even if I trace there x and y positions I don't see them on the stage.

I'm familiar with AS2 and just getting started with AS3. I found a submenu fla I would like to use, and I have everything set up, just not sure how to attach movies from the library when someone clicks a navigation button.In AS2 I would have made an empty mc and used attachMovie when the button is released.I've looked at some of the addChild questions and tutorials here, but since I'm working with pre-written code for a submenu, I'm not sure about how to modify what I've read to work in that code.Here's the code that sets up the submenu, the last function (navigate) is where I'm not sure how to instruct flash to load an mc when one of the buttons (from the var subButton:Array) is clicked. I am creating a platform game through the use of arrays, and i am inserting the platforms in a variable called blockHolder. I have successfully inserted generated blocks, but i want to insert my own movieclip, so i replaced this code:

And it gives the error: Implit coercion of a value of type class to an unrelated type flash etc.
but it didn't work. I guess length is not a property of each array element.
By the way, the array is already large (270,000 elements) - so I need the sort to work very fast, and I don't want to be adding anything else into the array.
How do I set the width of the array and length and set each of the values in it to the same number. This is for a game I am working on. I know you use for loops to find the x and y of the values... This doesn't work, but think its how it suppose to work.
I am attaching mc's from the library using xml to populate the textfields. What I am wanting to do is show the first six mc's, then after say 10 seconds show the next six. With a text field displaying "1 of 3", after 10 seconds, "2 of 3" ....etc. A bit similar to image galleries really (sorry if I haven't explained this very well).Anyhoo, heres what I have so far, it loads the mc's one after each other:
