Making Text Attributes Understandable To Old School Print Designer?

Jun 23, 2009

To enter static text in Flash, the only measurement option available for the text size is points,while the measurement for"Letter Spacing" appears to be pixels (based on my own observations, can't find documentation to verify this). Can either option be changed so that both options are measuring pixels or point/em units?

For instance in InDesign, the type size is in points and the "Tracking" is 1/000th em (see comment here). Both measurements are based on the same basic unit, while Flash seems to be using two different basic units of measuring.

Actionscript 3 :: Parsing The XML To Print A String With Formatting Attributes Per Word

Sep 27, 2011

I have an XML which contains a field of the type:

<mytext><![CDATA[ My name is <color value="FF0000">Bill</color>. ]]></mytext>

I wonder if there is a simple methodology (using E4X methods) in order to print the inner text: "My name is Bill." in a text area and having the word "Bill" colored i.e. red.

The generalized situation is, if i can print the inner text and use XML tags to specify formatting attributes of the text per word.

Do E4X supports this type of parsing, or do I have to program my own "little" parser for this situation?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Object Attributes From XML / Sub-attributes

Jun 29, 2009

I am dynamically creating a number of objects (movieclips) which all have a number of attributes.[code]and so on. i.e sub attributes. I don't think this is possible? Only sprite and movieclips can have dynamic attributes so unless atrbY is a movieclip (which it isn't, it's a string) it isn't allowed?Each object can have suboptions with further attributes associated with the chosen suboption.Later in the program I will manipulate, read and interact with the objects and they have text display behaviours dependent on the suboption chosen. That part (should) be straightforward! heh. One the object has the attributes attached in a usable format, accessing them should be simple.This will be for a store. i.e t-shirt1 has size small, price 10, size medium, price 12, size large, price 14. t-shirt2 has size medium, price 35, size large, price 40 and so on.[code]

This format of the XML can be adjusted if it would make the parsing easier.I am currently reading the XML in, stepping through, grabbing the individual parameter such as category and then adding it as an attribute of the object and it works fine. i.e. I end up with obj.category = 'catname'. However, on suboptions I am having a problem.Should I put all the suboptions in a multidimensional array and use nested loops to apply them to the object?I would still have the problem of objX.suboptionarray[Y].suboptionprice which isn't allowed? In the above XML case Y would be 0,1 and 2 giving 3 suboptions to objX and each suboptions would hold attributes such as pvid associated with that suboption.I could go down the horrible route, obj1.suboption1subptionprice ; obj1.suboption1suboptionpname; obj1.suboption1suboptionvalue; obj1.suboption2suboptionprice; obj1.suboption2suboptionpname and so on and so on for each suboption which could be five options (small,medium,large,x-large, xx-large) and which would "work" but would be bad programming and involve splicing names to get say, the "third" suboptions' price and pvid e.t.c

Going down the route of mutidimensional arrays sounds good except that on say 50 objects I would have stacks of arrays which I'm guessing isn't great in terms of resources?.Just to add, the number of suboptions varies between object, every object has a minimum of one suboption (default option) but can have as many as needed (unlikely to be more than 5 but should be scalable). i.e some t-shirts only come in medium whereas some have many sizes.I have a fair amount of leeway on the format of the XML which I generate from the database so the formatting of that could change to make the parsing easier.

They told me flash is the best for beginners. I was thinking of making a clone of hangaroo but replace it with another animal and my country's language. Is this possible in flash? Is there noob-friendly tutorials out there that explains the basics of how to make a hangaroo style flash game?

Actionscript 3 :: Operating On Objects Using Flash That Were Created Manually By A Designer In The Timeline

Jul 25, 2011

I was trying to build an application where a designer has created content on the timeline as a sequence of key frames. Each key frame is completely different. When the application is started I choose one of the frames, move the play head to that frame and stop (using gotoAndStop). Next, by referring to symbols in the key frame by name, I use AS3 to allow drag and drop, and I also do some programmatic movement.

The problem is that when I move to a different key frame on the timeline using gotoAndStop, the symbols that were touched by AS3 in the previous frame, even if they are not referenced by the designer's key frame, show up on the stage. It is as though any DisplayObject that I touch with AS3 becomes divorced from the timeline.

how to programatically work with timeline (MovieClip) content that was manually created by a designer. This just seems like it should be a really common use case. It seems that about the only thing I can do safely with the timeline is to move the play head and respond to events (if I don't change the state of DisplayObjects in the timeline). Also, is there any good documentation on how objects get allocated and destroyed when the timeline plays?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Print Multipage HTML Text?

Oct 23, 2009

Despite my better judgment I've gotten into a position where I have to print large amounts of html text from flash. By large I just mean that it may have to be broken up into multiple pages. After much frustration however I have come up with what seems to be a pretty consistent solution (described below).The one problem I'm still having is that there are sometimes images embedded in the html text and those are not printing consistently. At first I figured I just needed to add in a delay to give them time to load. This is kind of true. If I don't give any delay none of the images will print.

However, even with a long delay (i've tried up to 10 seconds) there are still the occasional missing images. I've checked the image paths and they display just fine on screen. It seems to have something to do with number of pages and/or scrolling issues with the text field. Images on the first page always print. If there is an image on the second page and the print job is only 2 pages, the image on the second page never seems to print. If there is an image on the second page, but the print job spans 3 or more pages then that image will print. Anyway, as you can see it's really weird am I'm just hoping someone can point me in a direction because I don't even know what else to check for.Here is the how my routine is setup

ActionScript Code:
var _printDepth:Number = 200;
var _printInterval;

[code]....
