I've traditionally all my as3 code in one included .as file, not as packages / class files, but I'm trying to make that transition. I'm a little confused about how to pass information back and forth among class files though. For example, what I'm trying to make is a sort of node diagram where clicking on a certain node will sprout out its child nodes, and clicking on a child node will sprout out its children, etc. I have a main class, Main.as, which I was going to make parse an XML document and store an array of all the relevant data for each node (things like a title, link, etc). Then I have a class file called Node.as which actually builds the node, adds it to the stage, and sets up its listeners and the motion tweens.
My question is - if all the information for the nodes is stored in Main.as, but the click handling is done in Node.as, how does Node.as know what attributes to assign to each added node (i.e., how does it access the array from Main.as to assign properties to the clips created)?[code]...
I have a AS3 script that parses the iTunes Library XML file and converts it into something better looking and usable. The script works good and the nicely formed xml is traced out in the output window. But i would like to export it to an independent XML file instead of the output window.
I've got my XML file loaded and parsing correctly with a trace statement.
I want to have each text identified as marketLocation1, marketLocation2, etc up to 150 and I wanted to use a 'for loop' to place the value of that XML node into each labeled text field, and each individual text field is buried inside a button so that the button displays on mouseover an associated XML fields data. Each button would also be corresponding labeled market_1, market_2, etc.
Meaning, I mouse over a dot on a map (button) and it pulls up a statistics balloon about that location specific to our companies needs. I'm a total AS3 noob, so I'm not sure if I can preload the data for that button into it's specific text fields.
I have markets divided up into regions. I have the base map, which when you click each region goes to a new labeled scene on the root timeline. The scene shows a closeup version of the region. On that region are the dots for the markets. Each dot would have an up state and over state (displaying the pop-up balloon with data) etc.
I'm working on the first 'button' as the initial test and what I want to do is make is that i can use a For loop to cut down on the code, using the variable i in place of the "1,2,3..."
The first button, market_1 is in a labeled scene SERegion on the main timeline. While the code I'm using to parse all the fields is in frame 1.
When I try to place the value of marketLocation located inside the button market_1, I am trying to do this when I parse the data
When i compile, i get the error 1119: Access of possibly undefined property marketLocation through a reference with static type flash.display:SimpleButton
MarketLocation is also in just the Over state of the button.
I've set up an XML file with names of objects that will be contained in my fla/swf library.I wish to position the objects on the stage at runtime using an XML file that can be quickly modified without having to recompile the fla/swf file. Of course, positioning can only be accomplished when the objects are instantiated and added to the stage. I want to send the contents of a variable to a class where it can be used in its functions. Since I have no experience with object orientated programming what so ever I tried to break it down into real simple code so I can understand better what's going on and how I can implement it in my main code.I made a test file and a test class, basicly I just want to give a variable contents in my main code, then send the variable to the class so the class can trace it. ive written a class to control my content panels on my site. They work well! Currently they controll all the positioning perfectly on there own. What I am having trouble with, is how do i pass variables into my classes. For instance, my main content panel, has variables in the class: public var contentState:Number; Now, what I would like to do, is have movieClips on my stage, or 'buttons' that will be able to change 'contentState' within my class.How do i go about passing these variables?[code]
I have two custom as3 classes, TriviaGame and TriviaQuestion, and I am attempting to retrieve a bitmap image stored in TriviaQuestion and have found it impossible thus far.
It seems the root of my problem is that bitmap is somehow null in my GetImage() function, even though it is class data that has been set earlier in ImageLoaded(). The only time I am able to access the bitmap's info (in order to add it to the display) is inside ImageLoaded().

I need to pass a boolean variable initially set to false to one of my classes called "EasyGame".It is than changed to true when one of the function in this class is runned.
What I want to do is pretty simple but I must not know how to do it. I want the URLFactory to create the Array and store it in the variable "dataArray" and use the Array in the Main class by calling the GetList() of the URLFactory class. What I have returns nothing...
Basically I need to set a variable equal to URLLoader.data (var something:String = URLLoader.data) so I can use this variable in other classes.
There are many tutes on the web on how to make interface elements, such as drop down menus, or accordion menus. The example Menu Class includes all the event listeners and functions. It invariably ends with the CLICK event function tracing some comment so you know it works. But no information on how to implement the Menu Class. So say you have a Main Document Class that instantiates a Menu Class. How can you pass the CLICK event back to the Main Document Class to do something with it? As far as I can see, the Menu Class can build the menu but all the listeners and functions for it have to reside in the Main Document Class. Or do you have to build a custom Class that extends the Event Class?

The Context of the Problem.I'm working on a rotator banner in flash. I use an external xml file to pass the banners info (like info-text, link, image-path, priority, etc). Everything is going well so far. I'm loading the xml something like this:

The Problem itself.Now I need to construct this xml on-the-fly in php and somehow pass it to my flash object. So instead of read the external file I want my flash script receive an xml parameter it can work with.
I have created a list of Classes in a school in Excel and saved it as an XML file. In each row it contains the name of the class followed by a list of class members. In col 1 is the word "Class", in the next col is "7C1" ( or equivalent) then each cell after that contains the names of the class members. I can load the XML file no problem, and display the full contents using 'trace', but I don't seem to be able to extract just the class names and student names to use in a Flash application. The code I'm using so far is attached.
So i a building a categorized menu of different foods. I have a class for "categories" (buttons) which essentially will return a string "salads", "drinks", etc. I now have another class "menuItems" for items within categories and this handles sizes such as "small", "med", "large", etc. My problem now is that when i return "salads", i want to invoke an array which contains all the elements of salads, send it to menuItems which will populate the menu. So far i have both the category objects and the menu object setup. I just cant seem to be able to send the data that the category object is returning and pass it to the menu object. Both of which are added to the stage as shown below:
If there was a way that i could say add all these classes to one class so that they can talk to each other that would be great but i dont know how to do this.
I have an application where I'm loading in XML data externally. What i'm trying to figure out is the best way to store this data in my application so that I can pass the relevant XML or data to my custom classes.
Basically I have a navigation and gallery class I have written both of which are instantiated on the document class, I would like to pass them each their corresponding XML. My question is whether I should store or seperate the xml into objects in the document class first, or simply pass each class its own xml node? Is there another/more preferable way to handle XML data between custom classes?

and then I just return the variable "text". However, the compiler complains when I try doing this. How can I return the value found in the onXMLLoaded function to the caller of the getValue function?
I'm importing an XML file with 3 elements into Flash CS3 (AS 3.0) and when I trace the results, I get everything in the XML file parsed nicely and cleanly. Now, I have a dynamic textfield that I set equal to the parsed results, instead of a trace, but when I do it, the textfield only outputs 1 node. I have the textfield set to multiline and it still only returns 1 node. Here is my xml file:
I have a flash application (a game) and it needs to pass data to a php page to save the user, and the user's score. However I don't want the user to be able to alter the score him/herself or to initial a scoring without using the application. What is the best way to do this?
I have a Flex 4 application that loads a module. Everything works fine except that I cant create and object or cast an object to a type of my module. At run time it throws an error. I'm not sure if there is an issue with modules, Flex4, and spark? I've tried many different ways to set/cast these objects, but nothing seems to work.
