ActionScript 3.0 :: Creating Variable And Its Class From XML Parsed Data?

Apr 7, 2009

I've set up an XML file with names of objects that will be contained in my fla/swf library.I wish to position the objects on the stage at runtime using an XML file that can be quickly modified without having to recompile the fla/swf file. Of course, positioning can only be accomplished when the objects are instantiated and added to the stage. The problem is passing the parsed XML file name/class paring data into the var creation programaticallyThe XML file contains the object names and class: simple example follows:

<objects>
<object name="myBall" class="Ball"/>
</objects>

Pass Parsed XML Data On To Classes?

Nov 30, 2011

I've traditionally all my as3 code in one included .as file, not as packages / class files, but I'm trying to make that transition. I'm a little confused about how to pass information back and forth among class files though. For example, what I'm trying to make is a sort of node diagram where clicking on a certain node will sprout out its child nodes, and clicking on a child node will sprout out its children, etc. I have a main class, Main.as, which I was going to make parse an XML document and store an array of all the relevant data for each node (things like a title, link, etc). Then I have a class file called Node.as which actually builds the node, adds it to the stage, and sets up its listeners and the motion tweens.

My question is - if all the information for the nodes is stored in Main.as, but the click handling is done in Node.as, how does Node.as know what attributes to assign to each added node (i.e., how does it access the array from Main.as to assign properties to the clips created)?[code]...

XML Data Parsed To Dynamic Text Field Within Buttons?

Sep 2, 2010

I've got my XML file loaded and parsing correctly with a trace statement.

I want to have each text identified as marketLocation1, marketLocation2, etc up to 150 and I wanted to use a 'for loop' to place the value of that XML node into each labeled text field, and each individual text field is buried inside a button so that the button displays on mouseover an associated XML fields data. Each button would also be corresponding labeled market_1, market_2, etc.

Meaning, I mouse over a dot on a map (button) and it pulls up a statistics balloon about that location specific to our companies needs. I'm a total AS3 noob, so I'm not sure if I can preload the data for that button into it's specific text fields.

Specifics are for the xml/flash file

Code:
<market MarketID=1>
<marketLocation>Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC</marketLocation>
<marketPopulation>2,600,000</marketPopulation>
<marketArea>100 sq. miles</marketArea>
</market>

I have markets divided up into regions. I have the base map, which when you click each region goes to a new labeled scene on the root timeline. The scene shows a closeup version of the region. On that region are the dots for the markets. Each dot would have an up state and over state (displaying the pop-up balloon with data) etc.

I'm working on the first 'button' as the initial test and what I want to do is make is that i can use a For loop to cut down on the code, using the variable i in place of the "1,2,3..."

The first button, market_1 is in a labeled scene SERegion on the main timeline. While the code I'm using to parse all the fields is in frame 1.

When I try to place the value of marketLocation located inside the button market_1, I am trying to do this when I parse the data

Code:
function parseData (marketInput:XML):void {
market_1.marketLocation1.text = marketInput.market.(@MarketID == 1).MarketLocation.text();
}

When i compile, i get the error 1119: Access of possibly undefined property marketLocation through a reference with static type flash.display:SimpleButton

MarketLocation is also in just the Over state of the button.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Creating Class Instance With Variable Value

Dec 16, 2009

Topic title explains what i want to do. Say I have a variable roomNumber (a string) and in a game where i move about, roomNumber will change (say, room34 to room35). When a new room is visited i want a new instance of my class Room to be created, but with the instancename of what the variable currently is. (point is that i can go back to a previous room, without it being changed because the instance has already been created) so... roomNumber:RoomClass = new RoomClass(); well, it unfortunately works so that the new instance is named roomNumber, and not room34.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Memory Management - Creating Instance Variable For Class

Then within various class functions I referenced this variable multiple times, each time I wanted to load in a new sound:
s = new Sound();
Am I correct in thinking that each time I created a new Sound I would be overwriting the previous allocated memory?

Data Integration :: Creating And Saving Data

Aug 20, 2011

I'd like to know if there's a way to take data entered into a field in flash, save it, and call it later via an object.I don't want anyone to walk me through it if there is, that's not what I'm asking. I'm just asking what I need to know in order to do this. I'd like to build a certain flash app that takes information (such as a name, paragraph, and/or sentence) saves it, and can then be recalled when a user clicks a button... even if the user has closed out the application.I'm still relatively new to flash, I know enough to get by on basic projects, but I want to expand my knowledge so I don't end up stuck in a beginners rut.Would this require using PHP and Flash? Or can it be done entirely in flash via exporting data to a designated external file?

Flash :: Creating An Instance Of A Class That Implements An Interface Based On The Class Name?

Feb 17, 2011

Is there a way to generate an instance of a class that implements an interface based on the name of the class?

I am trying:

var ClassReference:Object = getDefinitionByName("movement.OuterSpaceMovement") as IMovement;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference as IMovement;
trace("startup..." + m);

-But I am getting an error message ReferenceError: Error #1065 (OuterSpaceMovement) not defined.

I have several classes that implement the same interface (IMovement) but I need to be able to generate new instances of these classes and then pass these instances as a datatype (IMovement datatype) to other classes...

So then I tried:

var ClassReference:Class = getDefinitionByName("OuterSpaceMovement") as Class;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference() as IMovement;
and this doesn't seem to work...but the following
var m:IMovement = new OuterSpaceMovement();

ActionScript 3.0 :: Creating A New Instance Fails When Base Class Is Assigned To An External Class File?

Jul 22, 2009

I'm trying to create a new instance of a MovieClip when the original one has been used. Would sound easy enough. Just use: var

instanceName:ClassName = new ClassName();

the class name/mc in the library im trying to duplicate is MCg1 so

var instanceName:MCg1 = new MCg1(); right?

However, the particular object in the library i'm trying to duplicate has a base class that is an external class file (just to control it's drag drop functionality)... i.e baseclass is not set to the standard flash.display.MovieClip, or whatever the case maybe. So i end out with a: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Class Creating Multiple Objects Of Another Class?

Feb 12, 2009

I have a class that represents a turret in the center of my screen.When I hold down SPACE, I want it to create a "bullet"-object that moves in the direction of the turrets cannon, every frame the SPACE key is held down. I am having problems with this cause I am getting this error when I am trying to create the object:

Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

This is where the error occurs:

ActionScript Code:
public function chaingun(x_:int, y_:int, rot:int, cd:Number, spd:Number, sprd:Number, life:Number) {
this.Cooldown = cd;
this.Speed = spd;

[code]....

PS: What happens is that when I press the SPACE key, the "turret" class event handler runs the function "Shoot_Chaingun" and that function creates a new Chaingun-object (which actually is a bullet), that inherits the x, y, and rotation of the turret, along with some additional varaibles, including lifetime. Then upon creation, I use "addChild(this)" to add it to the main stage, and "removeChild(this)" once it's lifetime is up.

EDIT: And also, I just realized I don't have a MovieClip linked to this chaingun class. How do I make sure that every time a chaingun object is made, the MovieClip is also loaded?

Data Integration :: How To Parse Data And Assign Variable To Text

Jan 30, 2007

For the other two I get "level0.caption1" and "level0.caption2" instead of the text in the xml file above. How do I parse the data so that each of the variables are assigned the text in the xml file?
