ActionScript 3.0 :: Class Creating Multiple Objects Of Another Class?
Feb 12, 2009
I have a class that represents a turret in the center of my screen.When I hold down SPACE, I want it to create a "bullet"-object that moves in the direction of the turrets cannon, every frame the SPACE key is held down. I am having problems with this cause I am getting this error when I am trying to create the object:
Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
This is where the error occurs:
ActionScript Code:
public function chaingun(x_:int, y_:int, rot:int, cd:Number, spd:Number, sprd:Number, life:Number) {
this.Cooldown = cd;
this.Speed = spd;
[code]....
PS: What happens is that when I press the SPACE key, the "turret" class event handler runs the function "Shoot_Chaingun" and that function creates a new Chaingun-object (which actually is a bullet), that inherits the x, y, and rotation of the turret, along with some additional varaibles, including lifetime. Then upon creation, I use "addChild(this)" to add it to the main stage, and "removeChild(this)" once it's lifetime is up.
EDIT: And also, I just realized I don't have a MovieClip linked to this chaingun class. How do I make sure that every time a chaingun object is made, the MovieClip is also loaded?

I'm having one of those moments where I can't figuring out the simplest of tasks. And I'm presuming it's just a silly syntax error on my part. I'm calling a class that handles a nice lightning effect. And this is how I would initially set that up:

I have created a file called Config.as, in it are getter and setter methods that define variables that I need to reference throughout my system.
I have obviously made a mistake as I tried to access a variable in two files as indicated in a demo below:
Code:
package {
import Config;
public class TestOne {
[Code].....
It seems quite clear to me that I have created two instance of the Config class and that is why in class TestTwo the trace statement doesn't return "hello world". Is there a common coding practice to access the same variable with multiple classes?

Is there a way to generate an instance of a class that implements an interface based on the name of the class?
I am trying:
var ClassReference:Object = getDefinitionByName("movement.OuterSpaceMovement") as IMovement;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference as IMovement;
trace("startup..." + m);
-But I am getting an error message ReferenceError: Error #1065 (OuterSpaceMovement) not defined.
I have several classes that implement the same interface (IMovement) but I need to be able to generate new instances of these classes and then pass these instances as a datatype (IMovement datatype) to other classes...
So then I tried:
var ClassReference:Class = getDefinitionByName("OuterSpaceMovement") as Class;
var m:IMovement = new ClassReference() as IMovement;
and this doesn't seem to work...but the following
var m:IMovement = new OuterSpaceMovement();

I'm trying to create a new instance of a MovieClip when the original one has been used. Would sound easy enough. Just use: var
instanceName:ClassName = new ClassName();
the class name/mc in the library im trying to duplicate is MCg1 so
var instanceName:MCg1 = new MCg1(); right?
However, the particular object in the library i'm trying to duplicate has a base class that is an external class file (just to control it's drag drop functionality)... i.e baseclass is not set to the standard flash.display.MovieClip, or whatever the case maybe. So i end out with a: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

I have question regarding removing instantiated objects. Let's say i have a main class in which i instantiate a custom video player (or whatever) class:
Code:
...
var videoPlayer = new VideoPlayer(...);
addChild(videoPlayer);
...
And inside VideoPlayer class i have of course dozens of objects (movie clips, sprites representing different parts of VideoPlayer) and dozens of event listeners attached to them. My question is, if i want to remove this VideoPlayer class from my main class is it enough to just do:

I have an enemy on the stage that reads whether it's being hit by a bullet by a hittest. There's a for loop inside the enemy's class that looks for all the bullets and names the bullet that's hitting it "hitBullet". What I'd like to do have an easy way of seeing what type of bullet is hitting the enemy. I'm basically looking for something like
if (hitBullet == RegBullet) {
//do regular bullet dying
}else if (hitBullet == ClusterBullet) {
//do clusterbullet dying
}
, where RegBullet and ClusterBullet are classes. But I have no idea what hitBullet is equal to when a ClusterBullet or RegBullet hits it. I traced hitBullet to see what it would return and got "[object ClusterBullet]", but I'm not sure what that would be in the actual code.

My goal is to create multiple objects that fall downwards. The problem now is that the object stays in the left upper corner. I've linked the object to actionscript with the name "object". Can someone help me?
This is my code:
Code:
var namer:MovieClip = this.createEmptyMovieClip("objectHolder", 1);
for (i=0; i<=count; i++) {
var newName:String = "object"+(count);

Internally Flash obviously keeps a list of the primitives drawn using Graphics so I wondered if you have many such primitives in a Sprite, can you re-position/remove/alter individual items rather than clear and re-draw everything? Or is this deeper into the bowels of Flash than you're allowed (or recommended) to go?

What I have is a game with a Level object, inside the Level is a Player object, and they don't have instance names given, what I'm trying to figure out is how to do is make it so that the player can change the x or y properties of the Level object.
To be more precise, I'm making it so that when the player moves in a certain direction, he either moves accross the stage, or he starts moving the Level object around the stage, it'd be in an Event kind of function, now I can easily make the Player move, but I don't know how to make the Level object move which the player is inside of.

want to simplify coding and wondered if there was a way to write a script that could be used on multiple objects without having to write it to address each object individually. I am building a simple menu where I want the menu link to rise and scale up when the button for it is rolled over and then return to its original position when the mouse rolls off. I know I can write this per button and per item, but wanted to see if there was a way to write it once and then apply the action to everything. EX. My menu consists of 5 items (and respective buttons) home_mc (home_btn), menu_mc, dining_mc, contact_mc, specials_mc.If I write the code
home_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, homeOver);
home_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, homeOff);
function homeOver(MouseEvent) {

This shouldn't be too difficult. Heres my code:
for(i=0; i<30; i++){
var box[i]:Object = new Object()
box[i].id = [i]
box[i].name = "default"
box[i].location = "default"
box[i].type = "default"
But its not working. I keep getting error messages concerning the var box[i] statement.

I'm having some problems importing a class, the message that Flash gives me is this; The class being compiled, 'ImageLoader', does not match the class that was imported, '[URL]'. The only line of code in my flash movie is this: import com.martijndevisser.*; And yes, the class is in that folder The class is from here: [URL] I've used the class before and it works fine, I just dont know what to do?

I have a problem when making flash applications with more than one frame that has symbols placed on it in that I can't declare all of the event listeners for the objects at the same time and I have found that even if I put them all on the first frame, add the event listeners, then click through to the next frame then the buttons won't work on that frame.
Does anyone have any idea how I could solve this? I did consider myself a fairly competent AS3 programmer until I realised I had no idea how to handle this sort of thing. Solved: I initialised the clips from my external class and then addChild'd and removeChild'd them as I needed to and placed their x and y on addChilding.

I want to create a rectangular box and add it to the stage. Easy enough.
At the moment I create custom classes and attach them to movie clips in the library via linkage, but in my example there is nothing to attach it to as it does not exist. How can I create a "generating class" like this?
I just want to call it with a call like
createRectangle() or possibly have some parameters createRectangle("200", "400")

Version: Flash CS4, AS3 is it possible to turn a given sprite into a Class with a given string as its name? The resulting class should then be available under that name in the current domain's definitions.ie.

var someClass:Class = getDefinitionByName("someName") as

I am trying to create a class out of some code senocular wrote on another forum. The code controls the changing of a display object from one color to another. It's called InterpolateColor.I have managed to create a class out of the original code but I am trying to make the class static so that I don't have to create an instance of it in my controller class... I just want to access it by importing it at the top and then saying something like ActionScript Code:InterpolateColor.interpolate( _myMC, 0xFFFFFF );The problem, I keep getting errors when I try and change the class initialize line to ActionScript Code:static public class InterpolateColorWhat have I done wrong in my translation to a class that is preventing me from accessing this in a static way Here's the whole class:
ActionScript Code:
package com.bee.utils
{

When building an xml file, writting Quote:
item.@class = ""
will result in
Quote:

Seemingly it has to do with reserved word 'class', is there a way to avoid this?

What if you have methods you want to use in your project, that really have no need of a class, or in other words, there is no need for an "object" associated with it. It's not going to have member variables, so why bother making it a class?
for example,
I want to create a randomNumber method, takes two numbers, low high, returns a random between or equal.
Originally in my code I had a very top level class i just called globalLibrary that extended movie clip, i put my randonNumber method there. Then every class in the project extended that. I got the method scoped properly, but to me it looks like a hack.
For example, the most basic functionality in flash like +, even = , trace, etc. Are these also methods defined in some class that we are extending? Or are they methods that have no object associated since that would seem to make just as much sense.
why can't I just create a file of methods, and import that file and have access to these methods?

I am having some problems with creating different instance of the same class in as2..Pretty sure this should work in as3, so I'm not sure exactly.[code] I thought using the new keyword should create a new object independent of other instances..unless constructors are static in as2 and i just didn't know it.

I created multiple classes for a platforming game in AS3 and when i am making the levels i simply drag the objects of a certain class to the stage from the library. My problem is that i am unable loop through all of the objects of class type wall from another class of players.(so that i can make every player created not go through every wall created)
Like: for(i=0 i<numberofwalls i++){
do sumthing with wallobject(i)
}
Are there any functions that can return the number of walls dragged to the screen and one that lets me access each individual wall dragged to the screen?

I have two objects, both brown squares. I want them to be members of the same class but one square to have a number "1" in the center and the other to have a number "2" in the center. Any ideas on how I might accomplish this? Any clues on how to instantiate a vector drawing (drawn in illustrator) from ActionScript 3 as opposed to dragging it on stage from the library in flash?
