Professional :: Publishing .fla Project Including Client - Server Socket Connection
Nov 20, 2010
I have designed with Adobe Flash Professional CS5 a .fla project that integrates a client - server connection. After publishing it, I have the following issue:- when running the generated .exe file for Windows, then the connection to the server works perfectly- but when I am running the published .html file, then nothing is sent to the server.
I have tried to change the Publish Settings. When setting the Local Playback Security in Flash menu to "Access network only" instead of "Access local files only" then the last packet that was send using the .exe file is resent once and that's all (the html client does not receive the response from the server and the next connection attemps generate data transfer). I guess I have to change some security settings somewhere but I didn't find which.

I'm building a Flex application, which is going to perform many server requests (let's say, that almost all interactions require an update from server). At the moment I'm using remote procedure calls for it. But I was wondering if using a socket would be better. In other terms, is maybe better to keep the connection alive rather then performing many calls in sequence? For my demo app I only have 1 client. Is the number of clients connecting to the server a factor for this choice?

I'm trying to create a simple application that streams the webcam to FMS 4.5 (running on a Windows 7 machine), and then displays the published stream locally. Here's my code:
import flash.net.NetStream;
import flash.media.Video;
import fl.video.FLVPlayback;
import flash.events.NetStatusEvent;
[Code]...
All traces in the event handlers show the NetConnection connecting successfully, and the netstream publishing successfully. However, I get no video output from this. I've confirmed this using the sample video player in FMS 4.5 as well. There is also a weird traffic pattern reported in the FMS Admin console.There is some traffic (~4K) when the NetStream first publishes, but after that there is no activity.

I'm building a Flash-based Facebook game with a Java backend, and I'm planning to use a RESTful approach to connect the two of them (not a persistent socket connection). I'm using the AS3 library to connect the client to Facebook, so that's where I have my session information stored. However, how do I authorize client connections back to the server? I can't leave the callback URLs open since that'd let people manipulate game state without playing the game. I need to make sure that the calls are coming from a valid client and through a valid session.
At the moment, users have no direct login to the backend server -- it's all handled through the client frontend. Can I pass the Facebook OAuth2 access token to the backend in a way that the backend can verify its validity? Should that be enough to trust a valid frontend connection?
I could do a two legged OAuth signed request or just use a simple shared secret, but the keys would have to be packed in with the flash client, which makes that almost useless for this use case.

Is it possible to stop a (live) Stream from playing for a user, but keep his NetConnection open for eg chat functionality?I only see a setBandwidthLimit to accomplish something similar to this, but then, if BW is set to 0, chat won't work.Why isn't there a built in feature to do something of seemingly common necessity like Client.stream.stop/change function to stop or change what video playback the client sees?

I am trying to adapt an existing flash web chat application for the Android mobile phone and I am having this really annoying issue. The server is a custom based solution and can send back both binary messages or XML. So I can use either XMLSocket class or the Socket class to get data from the server. Everything works fine when deployed and I connect from the desktop but when I try it from the android mobile I get the infamous errors #2031, followed by #2048. Now the crossdomain.xml file is rock solid and works well for desktop. When the connect socket method runs I see that the server replies with the crossdomain file but I get the error when running on the mobile. Has anyone bumped into this? Is there some limitation from the mobile phone part. I wasn't able to find anything relevant for this issue, in terms of the phone not allowing Socket or SMLSocket connections

My client is in Flash/Flex (game with chat) and it will be talking to a Java server. What is the best way (protocol / interface) for my Flash client to talk to my server? I heard about Flash Remoting MX, but it is a request / response mechanism. I could always request something and wait for asynchronous notifications from server. Then request again, implementing something like a Comet server.Anyways, what is the industry standard for this type of communication: Flash Client talking to Java server, supporting asynchronous "push" notifications from server.

I have a flash project with about 3500 items - mostly containing movie clips with linkage. The SWF acts as an external library. I publish the SWF file under AS3 + FP9 (also tried FP10) and when I tried to access the items using
var _proAD:ApplicationDoman = loadEvent.target.applicationDomain;
var profileClass:Class = _proAD.getDefinition(item) as Class;var sprite:Sprite = new profileClass();
but all returned null! (after looping through them) - I traced the item's name in the output and they all matched exactly correctly.After a while, I managed to narrow down the problem which leads me to think it's a newly introduced bug in Flash CS5.
Test1: Deleted 500 items from the project, and it worked - all items returned non-null when using the code above. Also tried deleting a different range of 500 items instead of the first 500 - which also worked. This test confirms that all items were not courrpted.
Conclusion: Flash CS5 is unable to successfully publish a project containing over 3500 items in the library. The resulting SWF file size was about 500KB - which indicates it contains something, but still was unable to access the items.
Test2: From CS5, saved the project as CS4 format and opened it with Flash CS4. Published it (via CS4), and it worked. All items returned non-null. Great. However, when I added 500 more items (total of 4000) - it failed both on CS4 and CS5.The publish only takes about 10 seconds. Not very long..

We're writing a flash application that can download a MP3 file, convert it to a Sound object, get the raw data and make some processing (like adding sounds, change octaves). After the processing, we want to send the data back to the server in chunks, so the server will be able to glue the data together and recover the new generated file. The problem is: if we send to the server "wav" pieces of sound, we are able to glue them together without any problem in the generated file. However, if we convert each wav piece to a mp3 file (so we can send a smaller file to the server) and join the mp3 files at the server, the result is a sound with some problems at the merge point.
This is how we load the mp3 file from the server:
sourceSnd.load(new URLRequest("sample url to mp3"));
sourceSnd.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, carregou);
This is how we convert each piece of mp3 to bytearray and wav:

I'm writing a online application in flash and I'm trying to test the socket connection over a java server running on localhost. It works fine running in the CS3 environment using ctrl+enter and it's communicating with the server and sending information back and forth. But I can only test one client at a time like this. When I try to run the swf straight it isn't connecting. how to set up the permissions correctly so I can test locally?

Flex stylesheets are parsed by the compiler and bundled with their assets (graphics, usually) into a swf file, which can then be loaded at runtime. I've got a project with a fixed number of styles (currently 4: old corporate style, new corporate style, and high contrast versions of both). Using Flash Builder (Eclipse with Flex IDE plugin) I'm able to have all .css files compiled to .swf files alongside the primary project artifact .swf file. This is also possible with ant scripts.
My current understanding is that Maven wants to only create one artifact per project (POM file), but may have some additional ones added (like zip packaging). For scalability reasons - I've got a complex setup of many library and module projects, several of them having their own individual stylesheets - it would be very impractical to split up the projects into the 'main' project and copies for each stylesheet. At least on the Eclipse project side, having some subfolders with POM files in each, all refered by a master pom file and referring the same src/ location (and being inside one Eclipse project) would probably work. Though that's ugly and needs individual artifactIds for each, and still need to be assembled somehow.
The important thing is to be able to have a final assembly which contains the (Eclipse) projects main swf file and each stylesheets swf file (and some static files like localized texts to be loaded at runtime). This will be part of a large assembly of several of those projects which I've described in a separate question.
I'm using Eclipse 3.6.1 (Helios) with Flash Builder Plugin (i.e. Flex4), targetting Flex SDK 3.5 (FlashPlayer 10.0). I've installed Maven 3.0.2, using Sonatypes flexmojos-maven-plugin 3.7.1 (as it seems more active than the one from Servebox). I've manually created pom files for my projects and they work (though only compiling one swf artifact file, depending on whether I specify the main .as or one of the .css files as sourceFile)
I've tried for some days now to understand "The Maven Way" (which seems to be tailored for Java and not fitting perfectly for Flex), but couldn't get this to work so that I have a single project, or at least a single assembly with everything in it.

I have 2 applications which I wrote in ActionScript 3.0 as client and C#.net as server. These are basic chat applications. Also I have a test website which is running under the same machine with chat server application.
Server application is listening 289 port, flash application connecting to server with domain and 289 port, it can talk with server during working on Flash. But when I put the flash in a html page, the socket connection is breaking after a while because of security reasons.
I know that is necessary to put a crossdomain.xml file on target website's root folder. The problem is here: Yes, there is a crossdomain.xml file like this:[URL]...

There is a flash movie which is using flash.net.Socket to connect to a server. But there could be a situation when the server is not running, hence nothing is listening on the port socket is connecting to.
When I do "telnet hostname port" I get a fast connection refused error. But flash.net.Socket does not invoke any event (see below), but silently waits for socket timeout. For me it is important to reduce time needed to detect non-existing server as much as possible to be able to reconnect to another server in the cluster.
I've tried the following events, but to no avail:
close
connect
ioError
securityError
socketData
None of these is invoked in such situation.
Is there a way to detect that TCP connection has been refused using flash.net.Socket?

I would like Flash to reconnect to a socket if its connection is dropped. I am using the Socket class to establish a connection and then adding an Event.CLOSE listener to the socket. What is a good strategy to reconnect back to the socket if the connection has suddenly closed? Here is a the method I am calling inside the close handler. The connect() method establishes a new socket connection
HTML Code:
private function handleOutage():void
{
// if socket is not connected
[code]...
However, I keep getting the following error:
HTML Code: Error #2044: Unhandled securityError:. text=Error #2048: Security sandbox violation

.to the letter after installing Apache and PHP on my pc. And i am geting really fraustrated because i cannot get the flash objects to connect to the PHP socket when they have been uploaded to the localhost server or any other online server. However it works no problem when i run the flash object straight from my HD. The socket is definately open because telnet connects to it fine.
My pc ip is 192.168.1.7. And when I transfer the flash object to any other pc on my lan, if it is on the hd, it connects to my pc no problem. However, if i were to type in http:[url]... it DOESN'T WORK.

I use a socket connection to share data between flash and VB. I check the connection in VB and send a message when my flash is connected. My VB tool then sends the data continuesly (about every 40 milliseconds or slower) to flash. Works fine. Now I have to send some data back from flash to VB. I can send the data without any errors in Flash but it never arrives in VB.
