Oct 20, 2004I have a gallery that reads an ms access database using asp and then loops through an array of records and duplicates an empty movieclip for each record. jpeg is then loaded into the movieclip and then a variable for the _x position is incremented and then the next one is loaded etc.I then use the same method to add the necessary labels for the images by duplicating a movieclip and adding a text fieldThis is all fine and produces a gallery of images but the problem comes when I try and position the labels according to the height of the image. I have tried every method I can think of to check the image attributes which are only available when it is fully loaded, but I keep getting a value of 0.

Jan 30, 2004I was wondering if there was a way to dynamically load JPEGs and read their width/ height attributes before they actually land on stage.I have tried it once wherein I hide the targetted movie clip and try to utilize the INIT functin to check for initialize. This works pretty good except that a little dynamic animation I need tends to act a little later than it should creating a bug if u proceed immediately.

The introspection API does not seem to allow it:
"The describeType() method returns only public members. The method does not return private members of the caller's superclass or any other class where the caller is not an instance."
Is there another way for an instance to know the name of its private members?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Object Attributes From XML / Sub-attributes
Jun 29, 2009I am dynamically creating a number of objects (movieclips) which all have a number of attributes.[code]and so on. i.e sub attributes. I don't think this is possible? Only sprite and movieclips can have dynamic attributes so unless atrbY is a movieclip (which it isn't, it's a string) it isn't allowed?Each object can have suboptions with further attributes associated with the chosen suboption.Later in the program I will manipulate, read and interact with the objects and they have text display behaviours dependent on the suboption chosen. That part (should) be straightforward! heh. One the object has the attributes attached in a usable format, accessing them should be simple.This will be for a store. i.e t-shirt1 has size small, price 10, size medium, price 12, size large, price 14. t-shirt2 has size medium, price 35, size large, price 40 and so on.[code]
This format of the XML can be adjusted if it would make the parsing easier.I am currently reading the XML in, stepping through, grabbing the individual parameter such as category and then adding it as an attribute of the object and it works fine. i.e. I end up with obj.category = 'catname'. However, on suboptions I am having a problem.Should I put all the suboptions in a multidimensional array and use nested loops to apply them to the object?I would still have the problem of objX.suboptionarray[Y].suboptionprice which isn't allowed? In the above XML case Y would be 0,1 and 2 giving 3 suboptions to objX and each suboptions would hold attributes such as pvid associated with that suboption.I could go down the horrible route, obj1.suboption1subptionprice ; obj1.suboption1suboptionpname; obj1.suboption1suboptionvalue; obj1.suboption2suboptionprice; obj1.suboption2suboptionpname and so on and so on for each suboption which could be five options (small,medium,large,x-large, xx-large) and which would "work" but would be bad programming and involve splicing names to get say, the "third" suboptions' price and pvid e.t.c
Going down the route of mutidimensional arrays sounds good except that on say 50 objects I would have stacks of arrays which I'm guessing isn't great in terms of resources?.Just to add, the number of suboptions varies between object, every object has a minimum of one suboption (default option) but can have as many as needed (unlikely to be more than 5 but should be scalable). i.e some t-shirts only come in medium whereas some have many sizes.I have a fair amount of leeway on the format of the XML which I generate from the database so the formatting of that could change to make the parsing easier.

Mar 6, 2008See attached file. I need to display the attributes under the price in the descrip text field. The only xml work I have done is where the nodes are all the same lengths. So it's easy to access the data using your basic for loop. However, the attributes in this xml file may have different lengths. So far I have pushed all the data to Arrays, but now I have no idea how to access the attributes "name" and "value" and associate it to the product. It should make since after looking at the fla.

Apr 8, 2010I have a initApp.as which instantiates a class which needs to access the "currentState" property and the States array as well. However we cannot get this to work as we cannot see how we can access this information.
Within initApp.as currentState is accessed via "this.currentState". This does not work in the class which is instatiated within initApp.as. The following error is thrown:
"Access of undefined property currentState."

I am trying to access a public property from AvEniroments class through the Player class, however I'm getting an undefined property error (#119). I've tried the following:

this.x = parent.xs
I've also tried something like this:
var ev:AvEnvironment = AvEnvironment(parent);
this.x = ev.xs
but I get a TypeError. Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

Aug 17, 2010I'm just now learning the new object oriented way of scripting. It's been a wild ride, but I've finally learned how to keep script off my frames (very hard coming from as2).Here's my problem:
I have a TextField on the stage in my main .fla file named loadPercent.
I'm loading a jpg with preLoad.as and displaying the bytes loaded in loadPercent.
I can access my loadPercent TextField from my MainClass
but I can't access it from preLoad.as
the document class is MainClass.as

I get three '#1120 access of undefined propery' errors for each time i try to access loadPercent.
a few basic questions: 1. all my files are in a folder in my documents, not in the flash directory, is this bad? I've seen people using com.whatever etc.
2. my main .fla file does not share the same name as my MainClass.as (it's not named MainClass.fla) Is that a problem?
I'm assuming these are inconsequential because my code seems to work up to a certain point.

I have 1 class that extends movieclip, let's call it Class0. I have 1 class that extends movieclip, let's call it Class1.
I create an instance of Class0 on stage like : var myClip0:Class0 = new Class0(this, "Class1");
The class Class0 when initializing, will create a new movieclip (myClip1) and add it as child, as an instance of Class1, like myClip0.myClip1. But it's when i create that clip, i want to tell it, it's an instance of Class1, like :
private var myClip1:Class1 = new Class1(this);
Where Class1 could be any class.
How do i pass Class1 to Class0 so it can create it dynamically?? Do i have to use the apply function??
inside Class0, i have a function that does :

Mar 3, 2011My first experience is build an aquarium with a lot of fish swimming, and they can be clicked. When one of them is clicked we should receive a trace message saying ("I�m a Fish!"). To do this, I thought that the best way will be:
1- create a document class, named Main.as
2- create a base class, named Clicked.as
2- create a movie clip with a fish.
3- export the movieclip to actionscript. In the mc properties set Class as "fish" and Base Class as "Clicked".

Mar 1, 2010i have a game that i want to put load screen on, which i created a separate class for. first the main class is initialized and in the constructor function, it does an addChild(loadScreen) which places an instance of the loadScreen MC on the stage. within the loadScreen is a "Play Button" that when a user presses this button i want it to continue startGame in the Main class. the way i tried it was Main.startGame from the loadScreen class, but that obviously does not work. is it possible to call a function from a different class.i have three files:
