Actionscript 3 :: Flex Is Smaller Varialble Name Is Faster Then Longer Names?

May 21, 2010

We are in process of optimization of Flex AS3 Application.

One of my team member suggested us to make varible name length smaller to optimize the application performence.

i.e.var IsRegionSelected:Boolean = false; //Slower
var IsRS:Boolean = false; //faster

ActionScript 3.0 :: Does Better Faster CPU Necessarily Equal Faster SWF Compile Times

Jan 25, 2010

My question is, does a better, faster CPU necessarily equal faster SWF compile times? Or does it rely on something else (OS, memory, etc). I only use AS3 and some of my projects take a while to compile. If certain hardware can guarantee me a faster compile time, it'd be worth including those things in my shopping list.

Flex :: Make Web Application Load Faster?

Feb 24, 2011

I made a Flex 4 web application. Upon testing locally, I already got satisfied at how it looks like. However, the swf's file size grew to around 6mb in size so when I uploaded it to my website and viewed it, it takes forever to load on a computer with quite slow internet connection. So my question is, how do I make it load faster? Should I:

separate it into chunks? If so how do I do it.

not put the embedded images inside the SWF but instead, store it outside in a folder? If so, how do I make it load on the background while the user is interacting with the primarily loaded parts of the web app?

C++ :: Transmit Data From C++ To Flex / Air Faster Than Sockets?

Feb 1, 2012

I have a C++ application which sends images to a Flex/Air front-end via TCP sockets. All this data transfer occur in the same host, so the socket connects to a localhost server. The problem is that the Flex/Air takes a really long time to read the entire image from the socket. The server sends the image quite fast, but the Flex/Air reads this image in tiny parts. The whole image has about 300MB and the Flex/AIR reads only about 1KB each iteration. So the flex keeps calling the socket data callback, which is causing the application to slowdown.

Is there any synchronous sockets to use with flex, or some kind of socket which can read the entire data all at once? If sockets aren't the best choice, is there any other faster options? My socket class looks like this:

Flex :: When Add A Valid Statement To Code It Will No Longer Compile

Nov 22, 2011

I am having a problem with my build. When I add a valid statement to the code it will no longer complie and it fails with errors from an unrelated file.I experience these issues building with ant or building with mxmlc on the command line.Adding a valid statement to an myLittleBox.mxml will cause this error.All the errors are in ViewerMain.mxml.This file is not the main mxml file but it is referenced from the main mxml file.Before changing myLittleBox.mxml ViewerMain.mxml had no compile errors.There are no errors related to myLittleBox.mxml myLittleBox. mxml has no references to ViewerMain and only uses spark components ViewerMain.mxml has no direct references to myLittleBox.mxml. Its children's children's children would have a reference to myLittleBox.mxml.The valid statement added to myLittleBox.mxml could be many things (they all break it) including a comment.[code]

I noticed that the Model was using a constant in Viewer 1.This was causing all of Viewer 1 to be built when Viewer 2 is built.I moved the constant from Viewer 1 to the the Model (where it really should have been anyways) and my project built successfully since Viewer 1 and Viewer 2 were not being built at the same time.It makes sense that this would resolve the issue however this is just resolving a symptom of the issue.I am still very curious what was causing the the compiler to fail on ViewerMain.mxml when I add a comment to myLittleBox.mxml.I guess that it will remain a mystery for now.

Flex :: SWF No Longer Work - Error 2048 / 2046 Or 2032

May 23, 2010

I'm pretty new to Flex. Basically, anything I try to build with mxmlc fails to run now, giving me the above three errors depending on what I do. It was working 30 minutes ago, I've been spending that time trying to figure out what has changed. I redownloaded the Flex SDK, cleared my assetcache, have cleared Firefox's cache. (I'm using Linux.) Even if I compile with -static-link-runtime-shared-libraries=false, since it seems like #2048 is a RSL problem, it still refuses to run.

Another strange thing, if I keep
<policy-file-url>[URL]>
<rsl-url>textLayout_1.0.0.595.swz</rsl-url>

In my flex-config file, then firebug tells me that my swf file is trying to access a copy of that in the app's folder, giving error 2032. And if I stick the one I have in frameworks/rsls/ then it gives me error 2046. I don't know how it could not be properly signed, unless Adobe magically changed a signature and didn't update their flex SDK.

Flex :: Flash - Can No Longer Assign Class Property Values

Nov 1, 2010

Given a dynamic or non-dynamic class like the following:
package {
public class MyClass {
public var myProperty:String;
public var myBooleanProperty:Boolean;
public function MyClass() {}
}}

Flex 3 allows you to assign a value to myProperty like this:
myClassInstance["myProperty"] = "myValue";
myClassInstance["myBooleanProperty"] = true;

I regularly parse XML to get property names and their values then update correlated classes using this technique; however, Flex 4 no longer allows assigning the boolean property. I don't have a work-around.

If you trace the results:
trace(myClassInstance.myProperty) // Returns "myValue"
trace(myClassInstance.myBooleanProperty) // Returns null

ActionScript 3.0 :: Instance Names And Variable Names: It Goes Deeper

Mar 20, 2011

I started a thread about a reference to a symbol House, in the output window, which was: House_1. A lot of people said some useful things about that. All day I've been thinking about it, and I came to the conclusion that I don't understand things, at a very basic level.

Consider:I make a movieclip which I give the Symbol name Drawer. (I don't export it for AcitonScript.)On the stage I manually place two instances of this Symbol. The first one I give the Instance Name drawer (in the properties panel). The second one I leave nameless.Now if I trace the names of both these clips, by

trace(this.getChildAt(0).name);
trace(this.getChildAt(1).name);

the output window gives me

drawer
instance2

Now I know that the so-called "instance name" which I gave in the Properties Panel (drawer) is, in reality, a variable name which Flash gives my first instance behind the scenes. And instance2 is a name that Flash gives my second instance. What exactly the nature of that name is, I do not know.My point is: both names (drawer and instance2) are the .name property of these movieclips. Otherwise I could not have traced them through asking for the .name property, in the above. Yet only the first of these two can be manipulated:

drawer.x can be set;
instance2.x can (as we know) not be set.

But...why? What is the real difference between these two kinds of names? How can they both be the .name property of their underlying movieclip, yet be of such a different nature? What IS the nature of the instance2 name? If it's a String, how come the .name property of one movieclip can be a variable name, while the .name property of another (but identical) movieclip is a String?

I've searched every bit of web page on the net I could find. But it looks as if nobody addresses this issue. We all just work with it - but it makes no bloody sense. A name property = a name property, you'd think. Whether Flash set it or I set it should not make a difference. The x property of a clip, for example, does not change in nature according to who set it - me or Flash.So, again, just to emphasize the problem: how can a property (the name property) of a movieclip change in NATURE depending on who set it? After it's been set, shouldn't the name property of a clip be of exactly the same nature as the name property of another clip?

AS3 :: Flex - Get XML Tag Names?

Flex :: Get Hyphens In Attribute Names?

I can get away with:

var xml:XML = <item-description/>;

and

var xml:XML = <item-description the-name="foo"/>;

but what I need to do is set the value of an attribute like this:

var timestamp:String = methodToGetMyTimestampString();
var xml:XML = <item-desc/>;
xml@start-date = timestamp;

but I can't do that. Since flex doesn't like the hyphens, I don't know how to get or set attributes with hyphens in the name.
