We are in the process of developing a CRM application and for that we need to upload *.doc and *.docx files and display that contents.
We successfully uploaded the *.doc and *.docx files in application by using FileReference and FileReferenceList. Would you please tell me some idea to read the contents from *.doc and *.docx files and to display the uploaded file content into flex text area.

Now I want to display the first part of that text in a data grid. To do so it seems it might be easiest to get the plain text version.

I've been playing with an xml feed for a semi-useful class (which I'll post when it's done)....but I've run into a small problem.The XML feed doesn't send me HTML content, it only sends text. So a node that should read.Url...So I need to work out some way of recreating these links from a text only feed. Before I give myself a headache and attempt to create a class that searches each line of text for "http://" and then searches for the next space in the text, does anyone know if this has already been done? Is there a class out there that can look at normal text and convert bits that are web addresses into links? If not, can anyone think of a more efficient way to do it than searching the text for "http://" and then looking for the next space?

When I try to load text from XML into a text field any leading line breaks or spaces are ignored. For example:

The preceding loads into the text field without the leading spaces before "some text". How can I force the spaces to appear?
I have a Flash movie that loads variables from an external plain text file, that a client updates themselves (from a web site which generates the file). A problem occurred when they used an ampersand symbol in the text field. Is there a way around this? I haven't seen a way to escape it that works.

I have a very simple flash program code in AS3, inside this program there is a dynamic textfield html capable. Also i have a database were i will put some information.Each element in the database can be linked to other. For example, this database will contain tourist spots, and they can be related with others in the same database.This interesting spot is near <link to="ramdo2">ramdom place2</link>. And so, so so..The information in the database is retrived by the flash application and it shows the text on the dynamic textfield. I need somehow to tell my flash application that have to be a link to other part of the database, so when the user click the link a function in flash call this new data.The database is a simple Mysql server, and the data is not yet in there, waiting for your suggestions of how to format it and develop the solution.Im a php developer too, so i can make a gateway in PHP to read the MySQL and then retrive some format to flash, an XML for example.

View 1 RepliesI'm creating my first web application and I'm really confused as to what technology to go for. My application needs to look serious (like an application), it doesn't need many colorful graphical interfaces. It only needs a toolbar, a tab bar, a split panel (preferably 3 columns), an easily-formatable text field, and a status bar. It will connect to a MySQL database through PHP (unless I go for GWT). Users will upload files. My evaluation of the options:
Flex: Probably the easiest to develop but I'm pretty sure my application is something one would use on an iPad and with Flash's future on the iPad still unsure, I don't want to take the risk, otherwise Flex would've been my choice. jQuery: I've heard a lot about it and a lot of people recommend but I don't know how easy it is to use and how customizable the look of my app is. GWT: The problem with GWT is that it doesn't have many widgets. Another problem is that I'm gonna have to host the files in AppEngine's datastore and transfer them back and forth to a web server that will do operations on them (I need to process them) which adds more traffic and slows the process which worsens the user experience. Closure: It has a nice toolbar and a nice text field. I'm not sure how easy it is to use. Plus, I read an article that makes it sound really bad.

I'm building Action Script project in Flash Builder. No flex, no third party libs. Pure actionscript - hierarchy of packages and classes. How do I include a plain external .as file, which is not a package or class, but just a set of statements?
View 1 Repliescontinue the success with incorporating the scrolling thumbnails feature to my current galleries.I have done my best to incorporate the code from Kirupa's "Adding Thumbnails" tutorial to my site, but have a feeling the loader class is only MX 2004 and on, and I'm using plain old MX. I have absolutely no thumbnails showing up at all.
PS I also found two discrepancies in the tutorial:
1. Initial code to be pasted has a line such as this:

It's very difficult to test all possible variations in this, but I think I have, as there were 4 possible combinations since 2 lines of code varied. But none of them worked. Either way, would be good to know which users should be using. A little help in identifying: "snowThumbMC" is the name of my empty movie clip instance on my stage, in which I should be loading all of the thumbnails.
1. Is "target_mc" the name of an actual movie clip I should have on the stage somewhere? Or is it simply an empty one created via code to hold info?? I'm trying to figure out what exactly "target_mc" refers to.
2. Is "pictureValue" an actual value of a variable named "picture"? If so, should I have this variable on stage somewhere? I'm just not sure by reading the code (since I can't properly read it) what exactly "picture" refers to.

I am trying to embed a font in my Flash Builder 4.6 project, so far unsuccessful. I searched around and found this fix, adding "-managers flash.fonts.AFEFontManager" to the Compiler, doesn't work. I've embedded tons of images to the same project, but I'm not sure what's going on with the embedding of fonts.

Basically, I was completely stupid. I had a "#" and 2x" ` "s in the actual path to my project. I KNEW having those dumb folder names would screw my stuff up some day! And sure enough it did -with Java, but I moved Eclipse out of there a long time ago and forgot about it.
