Actionscript :: Advantages Of Using Mxml In A Flex Application?
Oct 31, 2010
they both seem to accomplish the same things with different syntax, whats the point of using two different technologies. highlight every possible benefit of using mxml. Also are there scenarios when one is more beneficial than the other and why. clarify this runtime behavior of mxml vs AS3 as discussed in Oreilly Flex 4 Cookbook page 1:
I'm new to flex. Now I'm writing an flex application. I plan to split my application into some MXML files(Application as the root tag). How can I switch from one mxml to another?BTW, what is the best practice for design large flex application? Just one MXML Application and many MXML component or many MXML Application?
A Flex components values are initlized by init methord. In an application flow, How to refresh a mxml component data value ; as init is callled at the start up it self only.
eg. of mxml componet may be as simple as button label or text as complex as repeater whose data provider is a web service ( means a fresh quesy should be made to pull the data and refresh the dataprovider of repeater )
Is it possible to move a flex mxml project into flash?
i have the project complete in mxml with actionscript but due to the fact that flex is limited in its visual animations ( no timeline! ) i would prefer to switch to using flash.
In mxml application made in flex if i place a part of actionscript code in separate file and include it in mail application using (fx:Script source) , then do i have to import all the mx and spark components in .as included file even though they are were already imported in main mxml application ? For example if i have mx alert already imported in main mxml file then will i have to import in again in the .as file placed externally although .as file is included in main mxml application ?
I have Flex application requiring to filter users depending on there database groups.Depending on which group they are, the're is a config.xml file that is use to populate the swf. Here is how I figure how to do this : 1. The client comes to a .aspx page with a form requiring a username and a password. 2. On the server side I confirm the user credential . Once the username/password is valid I redirect to the mxml file with the config.xml file in the html headers (post). My problem comes when I need to get the post data from the http request. Let's say I have this code :
Canvas.addChild() insists any DisplayObject added implements IUIComponent. But I don't want my core graphics engine dependent on Flex. Is there an obvious/common way around this, to have simple graphical objects like Sprites & Shapes in a Flex application? The individual DisplayObject children I want to add as children represent objects in a game world, like a spaceship or a missile or a horse...
Not sure if Canvas is the most appropriate container, perhaps Group or another class is optimal for a game-engine... example MXML & AS3 code showing a skeleton setup is most welcome. I'm targeting Flex4 & Flash 10, but Flex3/Flash9 solutions are still of interest.
I would like to send variables or parameters from Component to Main (MXML) Application. Like my component is FileUpload.mxml and would like to forward the uploaded file details from FileUpload.mxml to Main.mxml.
I tried the following procedure :
com:FileUpload id="fp"
to get the reference for the FileUpload component, however, I am unable to get the variables from the FileUpload.mxml file.
I have the following problem of how to display another mxml file as main view of application For example, lets say I have main.mxml displaying as main window. When I click button I want to display another mxml file lets say newMain.mxml and close main.mxml
I'm implementing a Flex application with several modules.I'm reusing the same component in all these modules.I was wondering if I'm correctly importing it in each mxml module definition: xmlns:hillelcoren="com.hillelcoren.components.*"Should I import it only once, in the main application mxml instead?
How can i design a 3D carousel for video/images to run on standalone Flash Player on my Desktop? I am using Flash Builder 4 to develop this as a mxml application, but found that it doesn't allow access to local filesystem. My specific requirement is that I want it running on the local computer and in SWF files viewed in a user's browser. Is there a sample code to do what I am trying to do? This application has states and transition, like one state for a video gallery and one state for a image gallery
In my main application I have a viewstack with 3 child views. In the viewstack change handler, I programmatically change the selectedchild property.
I understand that the initialize method for the view is not called every time I change the selectedChild Property. So I tried to invoke the init method programmatically too..
So yahoo astra has grate compohent for saving inputed data. They show examples of how to use it. But I had not found one capable to solve my current problem. For example user inputed his name. It is saved, but when he comes again he always needs to input at least first latter of his name. so I wonder - how to make Yahoo astra autocompletemanager component to pop up last inputed into it value on application creation complete?
I was reading these days about large projects implementation in python and Flex, and very often people praise the use of framework (like Cairngorm, PureMVC or others) over traditional OOP coding.
I think i dont really understand the advantage of using FW, which is the strong point over classic programming? how big should be the project in order to use FW? it is intended mainly for web-applications? or can be used for desktop apps as well?
Does MXML get compiled down to as3 and then converted to flash bytecode? Also, is there a significant performance penalty to compiling mxml vs compiling as3?
I am working on a custom Flex 4 component which is an aggregation of two existing flex components. I would like to be able to specify my own custom properties for the component as well as access the existing public subcomponent properties via MXML. For instance I might want to adjust the font color or style for the label and text input. toy component which aggregates both a label and a text input:
I am trying to override a Button class, i have a few properties which i wish directly initialise with the mxml description of the component, like :[code]which function is triggered ( in order to override it ) when all properties with mxml description is fully initialised with their values ?
I'm tasked with writing an application for placing and connecting objects (sort of like a room planner where you can place furniture). i've made a demo using Flash Builder 4 and built it for AIR as a desktop app. Now the client wants the full app, but they and I am unsure whether to continue building it as an AIR app or transform it to a web application using Flex. I tried making a simple conversion of the AIR app to a web app, and most things worked but not all. The things that don't work seem to be simple bugs, though, not complete lack of capability. The capabilities that I'm going to need (except for the modelling) are: Printing of the finished image + a list of the furniture that has been placed
A way to save and retrieve finished plans
A way to export the list of furniture to Excel format
Handling a whole slew of data about the different objects
Only the printing has been implemented so far, and seems to work in the web app as well. What advantages/disadvantages are there with the two approaches? Are any of the capabilities I need much worse (or even impossible) to implement in either approach?
Disadvantages
Requires Flash 10 (for saving files)
Requires a web server to serve content
Sligthly longer development time (from where I am right now)
Requires an internet connection to work
Lots of data transport, may be slow on a slow network
Desktop AIR app
Advantages
Slightly faster development time (from where I am right now)
No web server necessary
Can be used while not connected to the internet
All data is local and faster to load
Disadvantages
Requires the Adobe AIR runtime + a separate installation of the program
Updates need to be distributed to all users and an admin needs to install them
What I'd like to do: create an MXML component with some children, then extend it via MXML to create a new component with more children, without losing the original set.In other words
create a component bc.mxml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <s:BorderContainer xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
suppose i have 3 buttons(for example say, productin, marketing, sales ) on my main.mxml..once i click on one button it should take me to abc.mxml page with production data, once again if i click on second button it should take me to the same abc.mxml but with marketing data. same as for 3rd button also, how can i achieve this ?
I've been trying to create a custom mxml component that extends another custom mxml component (i.e.MyMXMLComponent -> BaseMXMLComponent -> Group). I've been reading that trying to add visual children to MyMXMLComponent caused error with Flex 3 but that's no longer the case with Flex 4.
What I want to know is whether this is a supported/fixed/documented feature of Flex 4? or just some undefined behavior in Flex 4 that may get changed with future updates?
if this is supported and documented feature, does anyone have link pointing to adobe document stating it as such?
