Flex :: Flash - Using Sprite Objects In A MXML-based Application?

Canvas.addChild() insists any DisplayObject added implements IUIComponent. But I don't want my core graphics engine dependent on Flex. Is there an obvious/common way around this, to have simple graphical objects like Sprites & Shapes in a Flex application? The individual DisplayObject children I want to add as children represent objects in a game world, like a spaceship or a missile or a horse...

Not sure if Canvas is the most appropriate container, perhaps Group or another class is optimal for a game-engine... example MXML & AS3 code showing a skeleton setup is most welcome. I'm targeting Flex4 & Flash 10, but Flex3/Flash9 solutions are still of interest.

i have the project complete in mxml with actionscript but due to the fact that flex is limited in its visual animations ( no timeline! ) i would prefer to switch to using flash.

I have Flex application requiring to filter users depending on there database groups.Depending on which group they are, the're is a config.xml file that is use to populate the swf.Here is how I figure how to do this : 1. The client comes to a .aspx page with a form requiring a username and a password. 2. On the server side I confirm the user credential . Once the username/password is valid I redirect to the mxml file with the config.xml file in the html headers (post).My problem comes when I need to get the post data from the http request. Is there any opensourse, free set of components for creating Flex mxml graphs? like aviary Peacock style ones with at least Drag, drop, and connect generators so each graph element could have or something like that. Framework should be opensource (like GPL, LGPL etc) BTW: I found one wary bacic made by Erno Aapa with Degrafa but I would really love to see something much more Flex 4 - mxml oriented and frienfdly.

How can i design a 3D carousel for video/images to run on standalone Flash Player on my Desktop? I am using Flash Builder 4 to develop this as a mxml application, but found that it doesn't allow access to local filesystem. My specific requirement is that I want it running on the local computer and in SWF files viewed in a user's browser. Is there a sample code to do what I am trying to do? So yahoo astra has grate compohent for saving inputed data. They show examples of how to use it. But I had not found one capable to solve my current problem. For example user inputed his name. It is saved, but when he comes again he always needs to input at least first latter of his name. so I wonder - how to make Yahoo astra autocompletemanager component to pop up last inputed into it value on application creation complete?

In mxml application made in flex if i place a part of actionscript code in separate file and include it in mail application using (fx:Script source) , then do i have to import all the mx and spark components in .as included file even though they are were already imported in main mxml application ? I would like my spark ItemRenderer to be able to render a varying number of graphical objects that depends on the user input. As an example, let's say that I want to render a set of ellipses on a line.I've been using MXML for my most recent batch of ItemRenderers and have loved every minute of it, but I'm not sure how to accomplish the above goal with an MXML IR. In Actionscript I can acquire the list of ellipses locations and draw them programmatically in the updateDisplayList method. Is there an equivalent in MXML?

I've got an object declared and instantiated in my Flex application's singular MXML file: public var CDN:CDNClass = new CDNClass; I would like to access this same CDN object (and its public methods and properties) in another class declared in a separate .as file as such:

But when I try to access the public method parsePlayList in the CDN object in a method in the class defined in the .as file, I get the following error: Access of undefined property CDN The reason I want to do this is to break up the logic of my application into multiple AS files and have minimal MXML files, probably only one.

I developing an AIR application in Flex that would be dealing with playing different SWFs. I am finding some issues as these SWFs that I am playing are heavy. I find that the animation is not smooth and is causing the graph of CPU usage to go high (my be because single thread architecture of Flex). I am therefore planning to have a multi process architecture for my application. Something like Google Chrome. I have one main application as one process and other SWFs would be playing in separate process but should be seen inside the main application window. How to make it possible in Flex?

Im using Oracle, BlazeDS, Java and Flex. I have a list of objects displayed in a datagrid(Lets call them Main-objects. Each of these objects have a set of UserComment-objects associated with them(One-to-Many relation in the DB). These comments may come from two different "types" of users, distuingished with either a 1 or 0 in the UserComment-object's "userType" field. Each time the user selects a Main-object in the datagrid, the UserComment's related to this object is displayed in a separate datagrid below.Based on the introduction, i want to separate the UserComment's into two separate datagrids (one for each user-type), instead of the one i have now. So my question is: What is the best approach for performing this task? What is the best way of separating the UserComment's into two separate data grids based on the value of the "userType" field?

Could tools like SWFAddress be used in some clever ways to alleviate an existing client-server architecture. I see possibilities to even introduce REST-like pattern mapping or something like that.

What I am currently doing is following all the Cairngorm guidleines, which has already led to a bunch of commands which all make sense, but inclusing the business delegates, and all that stuff, I am getting into a hard time extending and refactoring the application Anyway, what I thought of was somehow reducing the number of application events flying around, and the number of commands responding to them. Actualy, I am quite OK even coupling the view with some logic, if I can get rd of some layer complexity.

What I mean by that: perhaps, I could bind a button click to a url pattern (or use SWFaddress to change the url globally). On the other end, I wll be waiting for changes of the url, reformat it, and pass it onto a service delegate, which has the necessary mappings in mind, so it knows what method to call, or it could even pass the url directly to an HTTPSErvice. The delegate will then deal with the server response, and update the model, which through the bindings will update the view.

I am not going to completely ditch commands. I thing that they are good for scheduling of the internal interactions (within the client itself), but I'd like to abstain from using them for communication with the server.

I am working with a very large number of legacy SWFs written in AS1 and AS2. These SWFs use loadMovieNum extensively.

I am trying to integrate these into a new Air-based app (written in either AS3 or Flex). However, loadMovieNum doesn't seem to work within the Air app.
