Flash :: Narrow A Rectangle Within A Sprite To Exclude Transparent Pixels?
Oct 2, 2011
I have a Sprite that contains opaque objects surrounded by transparent pixels. I also have a Rectangle that represents a part of the Sprite that I want to render using BitmapData.draw(). The problem is that the Rectangle that I obtained also contains transparent parts. How can I narrow the Rectangle to only include the opaque parts and ignore the transparent surroundings?
kapep's answer is just what I want to do, but the problem is that the source is a Sprite, not a BitmapData object, and I don't have getColorBoundsRect() on a Sprite.

Here's a very simple AS3 project consisting of one class which draws a rectangle. When I run it, the rectangle is clearly larger than 100x100 pixels.
Edit: I know that it isn't correct because, though I have my screen resolution set to 1280x800, if I set the width to 500 it takes up almost all of my screen.

import flash.display.Sprite;
import flash.events.Event;[code]....

I'm trying to make a labyrinth type game where you control a narrow spinning rectangle. And you have to navigate it through a course without touching the walls.
I've been looking for 2 evenings now and I just can't find any type of collision detection that will do this. I'm quite a novice so I'm beginning to wonder if this is even possible for me to accomplish. All the tutorials I find are assuming the player will be a square, circle or a point.

I am creating a map in flash cs4 with all the countries on it. I used photoshop for creating the map and separated countries. Now I imported all pngs in Flash and I want to give Mouse CLICK event and Mouse Hover on all pngs, but as the transparent pixels are overlapping the other states, it is getting difficult. So, I converted all pngs in movieclips and now then I broke up pngs. Now I want to delete all pixels having alpha 0 using eraser tool, as per the borders. And I have to do it manually for individual countries. So is there a way to remove transparent pixels from the bitmap data?

For those of you still with me, I am tasked with making some scrollable content in Flash. Load in a TextFile using LoadURL(), then display it. To get the text, we've written our own class TextFieldExtended, which is basically just there to give the textfile location to the constructor and then have the class do the various steps of getting it and loading it for you.So I needed to get a Scrollbar, which I got hereThe thing is, it works with Sprites.After trying to get it to accept TextFieldExtended, I bumped into a block, since the scrollbar relied heavily on a Sprite property that TextFieldExtended didn't have or could have.
So I tried adding the TextFieldExtended instance to a Sprite instance using addchild.A problem occurs here that I do not know how to handle. It seems that a Rectangle is drawn and the Text is drawn on that. I say this because the scrollbar moves the Rectangle up and down a bit, but the text doesn't scroll, just the Rectangle it is positioned in and the text then moves along with it.My question: can this be fixed, or is does this implementation of scrollbars need a lot of adaptations before this is possible?

I have a BitmapData object with transparency (the sourceBitmapData parameter). Every time I use copyPixels() to copy it onto another BitmapData object the transparent pixels replace whatever is beneath them. I would like the copyPixels() function to simply ignore these fully transparent pixels (0x00) and NOT copy themBTW, I've tried setting the alphaMerge to true but that doesn't solve the issue - the whole source object just goes black and ignores ALL transparency.EDIT:
Here are the code snippets;
var b:UIComponent = new UIComponent();
b.graphics.beginFill(color, opacity);

I have a Flash fla file that contains a whole lot of images. The majority of each image is composed of transparent pixels with a visual object in there somewhere. Each image at the moment is at {x:0, y:0}.I want to trim away the transparent pixels of the image down to a minimum bounding box, but keep the object at the same global position. This requires shifting the trimmed image to the global position of the object in the untrimmed image.This is not so much a problem, but the fact that the images are all contained in a fla is the problem. The options I see at the moment are:
investigate JSFL, the Bitmap object has a getPixels, this in combination with a selection and delete operation could work save the fla to xfl and enumerate the images and associated xml with something like Ruby + image processing lib
Questions: Does anyone know upfront if this operation is possible in JSFL? Have anyone done much automated processing of xfl files? Is there an off the shelf image processor that can perform this trimming operation?

In Flash CS4, when I draw a rectangle (or circle, or anything) with a color that has 0 alpha, nothing is drawn. Also, if I select a piece of drawing and change the color to 0 alpha, the drawing (e.g. rectangle) disappears!I know I can draw a non-transparent rectangle, convert it to movie clip and set the movie clip's alpha to 0, but I'd like to avoid this.

I'm trying to make a modal pop up in my Flash application, not unlike the ASP.NET version seen here. I've already got the dialog box made, but I'm trying to add a semi-transparent gray rectangle over everything behind the pop-up, again like the one used in ASP.NET. Is there a way to do this in ActionScript? It needs to be semi-transparent, not fully, so you can still partially see what's behind it. I'm assuming you could apply this property to a Shape class somehow.

I have two options and I want to know whats faster. I have a pool of 1000 sprites objects in as3 on screen. When its needed each sprite has to resize itself. I can
1- Make each sprite a simple container to use graphics to draw a rectangle, that is, call a 'spriteInstance.graphics.' ,draw the rectangle and on each 'refresh', I do graphics.clear and redraw the rectangle but with the new size, this for each sprite.
or
2- Create each sprite with a border and on each refresh, resize it
Whats better?

I have drawn something onto a bitmap. But I now want to copy pixels in a shape other than a rectangle (as specified by copyPixels documentation) how would i do it? pull pixels line by line or something?
works: bitmapDatatemp.copyPixels(bitmapData, rectangle, new Point(0,0));
need: bitmapDatatemp.copyPixels(bitmapData, triangleetc, new Point(0,0));

I have a actionscript "Sprite" class which load a transparent png. When i set a "mouseover" event over the Script, it is throw when the mouse goes over the "square" containing the transparent png. I would like a glow effect to be displayed on mouseover, but only when the mouse is on the displayable part of my transparent .png. How can i do to throw the event only when the mouse is not over the transparent part of the png? Do i have to check by myself in the mouseover handler then do what i have to do?

I am using ColorMatixFilter on an Image in Flex. I am really close to getting want I need out of the filter.Basically any PNG file the user uploads I want all pixels that are not transparent to be colored black. I have a function that sets the "brightness" already so I just through a really large negative number at it like -1000 and it does the job but the problem is any pixels that have any alpha to them, say 0.9 or below all end up being white when I encode my PNG file on the server later.
[Code]...
I would like all pixels to be solid black unless the pixel is completely transparent and not sure how to tweak the values to get that out of it.

Iv created an app in work which needs a rubber. I basicly have a tool to draw line (paint/pencil). This draws over the entire stage area, including over buttons and interactive mc's. Once i draw the line i then want to be able to erase bit of it.
To this end iv made an eraser tool, which works well. I turn the line into a bitmap, then turn the eraser line into a bitmap and use BlendMode.ERASE to erase one from the other. My problem is, because when creating the bitmatdata i have to create a rectangular shape, the area created then means that i cant access any of the buttons underneath.
here is my code:
ActionScript Code:
//line array is an area of all the line objects which are currently live on stage.
for(var i=0; i<lineAr.length; i++){
[code]....
The way i see it i need to remove the transparent pixels from delBitMap once the erase has been done.

I'm trying to use copypixel to copy an image and paste it onto an existing bitmap. However, the image I'm trying to copy has transparent pixels so when CopyPixel's pastes the image onto my existing bitmap, the pixels already on the image is replaced by the transparent pixels from my image.
How can I make it so CopyPixel will only paste all pixels besides the transparent ones onto my bitmap?

I have a list of images, and without scanning through each pixel in each image, I want to find out if the image contains transparency (at least one non-opaque pixel).Is there a shortcut to do this (like a property of bitmapData object) rather than looping through the pixels?

i want to make all white pixels in my Bitmap transparent. i found the treshold-method and try to use it:
Code:

var rect:Rectangle = new Rectangle(0, 0, 2000, 2000);
var threshold:uint = 0x00FFFFFF; // all white Pixels

I'm making a puzzle game in Flash cs5/as3 which can have custom puzzle shapes. Basically, the user can draw basic protrusions of a puzzle. Then I create a black and white puzzle piece with a custom function like this var piece:PuzzlePiece= new PuzzlePiece(true,true,false,false); PuzzlePiece is a class that extends Sprite. The four arguments correspond to the four sides of a puzzle piece (up, down, left, right). If the argument is true, it means that protrusion should stick out of that side of puzzle piece. If it's false, it should have a hole on that side, so it fits the protrusion. I first attach the protrusions that stick out, then i flip the protrusions that stick in, attach them to a new sprite (in_part) and invert them with the following function:

im trying to draw opaque pixels on a transparent bitmapdata background
heres the ex:
ActionScript Code:
//TRANSPARENT BACKGROUND
var _pixelColor:uint = 0x9998002E;
var _bmpd:BitmapData = new BitmapData(4, 7, true, 0x00333333);
[Code].....
This example paints 2 arrows, the first is using the transparent background, and the second is using an opaque background on the BitmapData.
What I'm trying to achieve is to paint the pixels of the arrow completely opaque on the transparent background. But as you can see, the pixel is at 99% of its opacity (var _pixelColor:uint = 0x9998002E) How can I paint 100% opaque pixels on a transparent BitmapData "canvas"?

I am trying to use the bitmapData.setPixels method to set certain pixels in the bitmap transparent.But no matter what I do, it always seems to set the pixel(s) black (non-transparent).Here is my code:
[AS]
bmpd = new ImageFromLibrary(0, 0);
bmpd.setPixel(0, 0, 0x00000000);
[/AS]
why its not setting the pixel(s) transparent?

I'm trying to get a modal window working, but for some reason, no matter what I do, the only part of the movie that's modalized is everything but the bottom 50 pixels; apparently the background transparent rectangle thing isn't being made high enough for whatever reason. Does anyone have any ideas of what's going on? A demo .fla of the apparent bug is attached.

Is there a neat minimal way of doing this? (this produces an error):
var freeSpace = shape.freeSpace() // returns Rectangle
var s:Sprite = new Sprite();
s.graphics.drawRect(freeSpace);
Just looking for a more cleaner way other than something like .drawRect(freeSpace.x, freeSpace.y, freeSpace.w, freeSpace.h) I know you can do it with bitmapData.fillRect(rectangle), but need sprites in this case.

The company at which i work has recently upgraded all their design systems to CS5. This has given us endless issues with fonts. The main problem being old content opening up in CS5 reverting to Aria Narrow from either Arial Bold or Arial Regular.We develop elearning courses and do a lot of large batch exports of flash flas so this is causing us plenty of problems beause it is not guranteed that the 100 FLAs we batch publish are going to output the correct font.The majority of these files are old AS2 files and the majortiy of text fields that it occurs on are static ( we are in the process in upgrading to as3).I was just wondering with all the discussions of CS5 fonts flying around whether anyone had any similiar issues or any ideas for a fix.

Essentially, the simplified problem is this: I have a parent sprite "PARENT" with two children: One child sprite "A" that contains a number of children which respond to mouseover/mouseout and rollover/rollout events, and a second child sprite "B" that is shown/hidden based on the events in "A".
The problem is that "B" appears over "A" on the stage and when the mouse enters "B", the children in "A" throw mouseout/rollout events. Ideally, I would be able to make "B" completely mouse transparent so that the hit testing in AS3 will "see through it" to the underlying "A" sprite, but this doesn't seem possible.
Note that "B" has mouseEnabled and mouseChildren set to false... but the problem seems to be that the AS3 hit testing engine won't look at siblings when determining mouse hit testing. (i.e. It sees "B" under the mouse, sees the mouseEnabled=false setting, and then moves on to "B"'s parent ("PARENT"), but never checks to see if "A" is under the mouse (which it is)).
I can't make "B" a child of "A", because "A" is clipped and "B" needs to extend beyond this clipping area.
At this point I'm thinking I'm going to have to do my own hit testing, which is far from ideal given that "A" contains a large number of children.
