When i am not placing it under a repeater tag, the components are created from XML, but if i do then the components are not getting created.

I need to dynamically bind properties of components created at runtime. In this particular case please assume I need to use bindProperty. I don't quite understand why the following simplistic test is failing (see code). When I click the button, the label text does not change.
I realize that there are simpler ways to go about this particular example using traditional non-dynamic binding, but I need to understand it in terms of using bindProperty.

I am trying to ape the MS Paint application in Flash. I have a small point that I want to get cleared. I want to set the thickness of the line that I am drawing.I want to add a numeric stepper to stage dynamically. Only when I click on option to draw line the numeric stepper must appear on stage. It must be removed when I select another component.How can I add it at runtime. I got tutorials and references in which the stepper is always there on the stage. But I want it only when I want to draw the line.

I am having this problem with actionscript 2:
I have a class that instantiates a movieclip from the library, eg: myBar:MovieClip = level0.AttachMovie("debugbar", "debugbar_mc", 999);
myBar is an instance variable in the class.
Now the important part - debugbar in the library is a movieclip that contains some components - buttons and textInputs. The problem comes when trying to access these components.
I would have thought that this would work: myBar.input_txt.text = "hello";
in order to set the text of "input_txt", the instance name of a TextInput component on the timeline of the movie clip (frame 1 of a 1 frame mc).
This does not work. Infact, I cannot access any specific "component" properties - they come back undefined. I cannot added event handlers for the component events either.
I can however set and retrieve MovieClip properties for the "input_txt", such as _x. However there is one added strange thing with this too - setting _visible to false doesn't seem to work (however perhaps a component by default overrides this).
I tried casting it to a component, such as:
var temp:TextInput = TextInput(myBar.input_txt);
trace(temp);
which gave "temp" as null. Without casting, it gives the path to correctly.
It almost seems like the components are somehow broken when trying to access them this way - or that they cannot be accessed this way?
The thing is, I was able to access all of this before, when the code to do it was placed on the timeline (frame 1, the only frame) of the debugbar itself, where the components were placed at authortime.
I need to have it in a class though, as I need to pass in certain objects that need to be accessed by the mc. I am rather baffled as to why all this doesn't work.

I am created a dynamically adding a VBox, that contains two images. Into a Custom Component that is derived from UIComponent. The problem is the Vbox that contains the two image is only a really tiny size. I would like the VBox stretch to the size of the two images. This is how I am creating the Vbox....

I've been searching for the last couple days but can't seem to find a basic example of what I'm looking for. I'm developing a Flex 4.5 app and in it I have a viewstack of 2 components that use some of the same services. Currently the only way I can get the app to correctly use the web services is by defining 2 different web services that use the same PHP web service file. For example: I have an app, and within it I have a viewstack with tab navigation of 2 components: #1) retrieve a list of all Salary Employees, and #2) retrieve a list of all Contractors. Currently to get it working I am defining a UsersTableEmployees webservice within component #1 and a UsersTableContractors webservice within component #2, but they both point to the same PHP class, and only differ in the arugment value I pass to them. Ie, getUsers("employee") and getUsers ("contractors"). Of course this is not best practice.
Searching StackOverflow and Google gives me many results about ColdFusion and MVC (example What's the best way to share data between components in Flex?), but I'm still confused. Can anyone here point me to a basic example (even sample MVC) and source code of an app that uses Zend AMF and allows different components to call common web services?

I'm creating a small size Flex movies which contains two line charts, at the moment the size of the release build swf is 343KB, which is too large for our needs.
I've tried changing the loading of the SWC file to Runtime Shared Libraries, but I found that this removed the text of the charts (the text for the x and y axis). Why would the text be removed when the Framework linkage is set as a Runtime shared library?

Anyone know how to change a single instance of an item renderer for a Flex tree item at runtime? To reiterate, I'm not trying to change the entire tree's item renderer like this:tree.itemRenderer = new ClassFactory(ItemRenderer2);I'm trying to change the item renderer of a single tree item like this (the following code does not work):tree.selectedItem.itemRenderer = new ClassFactory(ItemRenderer2);To put it more simply, does anyone know how to reference an instance of an item renderer and set it to a new item renderer class? I am having difficulty getting a reference to elements added after compile-time using the 'id' property. I have seen a few forum topics suggesting that this isn't possible, and that getting a reference to elements added this way is trickier, but never just exactly what that trick is. I'd like to make a series of components into a solid, consistently repeatable object. For example, suppose I have a "notification" template that I want to add to a notifications area every time something new happens. This template includes an icon (Image), text (label), and some space between these two things.
I want to take a template like that and make it so I can invoke it with a function like add_notification("icon", "text"). How would I go about doing that?

What is the right way for integrating a Flash component into a Flex application? I heard that there are different ways of integration between Flash and Flex: using SWF, using SWC (something else?). What is the URL that Flex 4 uses to download RSLs at runtime? I want to check if I have access to this URL and that it is not blocked by the proxy that I am behind and would like to be able to put the URL into a browser to do this.Obviously there are many URLs (one for each swz file), but does anyone know what the basic URL pattern is, or can anyone give me a sample URL?

so I am trying to drag around some images in a canvas. I am adding eventlisteners to the components and calling startDrag() and stopDrag() to pick them up and stuff:
component.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, component.startDrag)
The problem is that it is selecting the image at its (0,0) location and not where I initially click on it. So there's a sudden "jump" when I click on the image. It is not smooth.
I noticed that startDrag() has two default parameters, one of them is lockCenter and it is default to false. Maybe do I set it equal to true somehow? (I don't know how to pass arguments to my second parameter in addeventlistener)
Another question: if I want to add more conditions to it, like make a new function that uses component.startDrag(), how do I pass the component to this function while adding event listener to it at the same time? for example: I want to do:
component.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, some_other_function);
where some_other_function uses component.startDrag();

I am trying to wrap some text with a component but can not figure out how to align them correctly. Here is what I am looking for:If you have not entered your credentials, enter your credentials by clicking Set Credentials.
The "If you have not entered your credentials, enter your credentials by clicking" is a string.The "Set Credentials" is a button so it can be clicked by the user.I tried putting the string in a textarea which wrapped the text but could not get the button to horizontally align with the text. I also tried adding them both with Tile, then I do not get proper wrapping.

I've been into coding for about 5 years now, but I'm a recent convert to Flash development. One of the questions I have at the moment is, considering that SWF files can be run by either Adobe Flash Player OR Adobe AIR, what's the real difference between the two runtime environments? What API's and Objects exist in one environment, but not the other?
Basically what I'm more or less trying to establish is, when would I want to develop an SWF for AIR, and when would I want to develop for Flash Player, considering that Flash Player can also execute locally (providing support for creating "desktop applications")

I'm working with the CoverFlow library by Doug McCune.
In the example included, he has created some panels inside a CoverFlowContainer. There are other examples of him populating the coverflow from an RSS feed on the page linked above but he doesn't include the source for these :(
I will eventually be retrieving data from a web service to add to the coverflow however I'm starting with this simple example:

I've defined some panels in the mxml and set creationComplete=init() so that the new panel I've created in ActionScript will be added to the CoverFlow container.
When I launch the application it displays the two predefined panels but not the one I have created in ActionScript.

I have a Flex application that I'm working on for a new job. It's sort of a training wheels application -- I'm learning the language, and this isn't an app that needs to talk to a service in order to do its job. There are a few instances of combo boxes throughout the application that share the same set of possible values (say, a selection of states: "In Progress", "Rejected", "Complete") that I want to have use the same data source.
What is the best way to manage this?
