How To Prevent Wrong Event.target

Now, when I click on the button in the area where the movieclip is it will register this movieclip as event.target. I would like to make the button the event.target regardless where I click and prevent flash from registering the movieclip inside the button as the target.

I place several empty movieclips dynamically on the main stage and load a picture in there with a adress derived from a xml file and some text also from the xml file. Then I add a event listner to the movieclip. On stage the image + text is correctly shown, but when I click the image it traces the name of image and not the name of the movieclip in which it is placed, I need the name of the movieclip because i want to tween the movieclip after it is clicked.

I've now found the code:MovieClip(root).square_mc. rotation= 45;Which has solved the problem fantastically.However my book suggests this format:root. square_ mc.rotation = 45; Also, using the 'insert target path' icon in the AS Window gives a similar syntax. eg for the above it gives this.parent.square_mc.orroot. square_ mc.Neither of which work, and generate the following message 1119:Access of possibly undefined property square_mc through a reference with static type flash display: DisplayObject.Am I doing something wrong, or does this style of controlling multiple time lines just not work?

I have these buttons in a movie clip and I would like to have only one event listener for the parent, using event.target to point to the children. I have also tried event.currentTarget, and it didn't work.here is the code that works:

It is only targeting the movie clip, not the buttons inside the movie clip.

I am using the new Flex4 Spark stuff but I'm stuck at an awful problem. Let me explain a bit of the situation first. I have a container (mx:Canvas) in which I do addElement() of one type instances (DocumentWindow). The document window class is supposed to be the holder for a view according to the type of the document. The DocumentWindow class extends TitleWindow. I also have a task bar which is a mx:Canvas with buttonBar inside so that the windows should be switchable. So in 2 words I got windows holder and a taskbar. The strange thing comes now: When I put a DocumentWindow with type "doc" (which loads swf made by swftools) the window appears in the windows holder and as task on the taskbar.
But if first I open something else - DocumentWindow with type audio or video which causes the DocumentWindow to instantiate different view inside, the window doesn't appear on the screen neither a task button is being shown in the taskBar. I put a trace() on that and it shows that numElements is increasing, the taskBar ButtonBar.dataProvider.length is increased, so the things are there - just that they stay invisible until I open DocumentWindow with type 'doc'? I even tried to make DocumentWindow not to load the view inside because I thought that the only difference is the view... but then even the 'doc' typed DocumentWindow didn't show. A clue may be that creationComplete is never called until a 'doc' view is added.

I have a function that's called when a file download has reported progress:

Now, this should work fine but unfortunately, event.bytesLoaded is returning much larger values than it should. For a test file (8555 bytes), bytesLoaded goes all the way up to 8973384.

I have a Flex 4 List component which I have tied a click event to. In my event, my assignment of the source file paths works just fine --> my larger image displays just fine when a thumbnail click happens. My problem comes when trying to attach elements of the dataProvider to text inputs on another panel. Actionscript is throwing an error. Can someone point me in the right direction??

I have got a flex app that communicates with a Scorm-API.When i run a javascript function from flex with "adl.nav.request" , i have to make a terminate function to make it happen which unloads the whole system,becouse this function updateds an "imsmanifest.xml" file. This xml is updated this time. This xml contains all the items that are connected to the index.hml which runs the flex app. That is why its refreshes. But i don't want my flex application to restart too.

I have a movieclip containg several containers with other objects attached to them. Those containers have different levels of nesting. Now I want to add an EventListener to the top-level MovieClip and the called function uses attributes of this MovieClip. Because
of that I cannot just retrieve the MovieClip by saying e.target.parent but have to stop the propagation. I know there is a stopPropagation() method but I don't really get how (and when) to use it.
If I have sth like this:

Below is the code for a simple Flex actionscript project. A sprite is partially covering a hyperlink. What's happening is that when you hover over the sprite, if you're also hovering over the hyperlink, the hyperlink is activated. I want to prevent that. I want the hyperlink to be activated only when the mouse hovers over it -- but not when the mouse hovers over the sprite which covers it.

I'm trying to make a vieport in which you can pan by dragging the background image around. Here is what I've done: [URL] Note that I've hidden the mouse cursor and replaced it with 2 custom ones. The problem is, the event attached to the background, which is a touch event, fires even when the mouse is over a sprite/movieclip (the monkey or the stats) that's in front of that background. And the stats isn't even in the gameLayer (where the monkey and the bg and the mouse cursors are). Try to drag the stats around, and see that the background and everything else pans with it (this is unwanted). Also, I need to remove the custom cursor and show the regular cursor whenever the mouse is NOT on the background (i.e. when it's on the monkey or stats or any new sprites I may/will have in the future).

I would like to disable copy event in the TextArea I'm using. To achieve so I added the following code block:

This is working fine unless the text area has lots of text inside in which case a scroll bar appears. After the scroll bar is being used by the user, the text area stopped blocking the copy event.
By the way, I am using text area for display purposes since I use rich text area format.

I'm implementing a text display area inside an app that displays selected text when the user mouses over one of four elements. Rather than creating a handler function for each element, I would like to get the name of the instance that is calling the handler in order to implement a switch statement. I've tried two ways, but both aren't working:

Both of those return undefined for the variable name. However, in the debugger, I can trace the event values through currentTarget.name, and that shows the instance firing the handler function, whether it be withdrawalText, initialText or timeText. So how can I apply the name value to a variable in order to determine which text block to display?

I have a URLLoader and a Loader triggering the same function. If event.target is traced by this function it outputs [object URLLoader] or [object LoaderInfo].However, the if statements don't seem to know what the event is and won't output anything even though it traces fine in the first trace statment. What is going on here?

My parent class adds bonus_mc It then adds an event listener to bonus_mc to listen for a custom event When the custom event is dispatched I want the parent_mc to remove event.target. The logic of the code is as follows (pseudo):

results in: ReferenceError: Error #1069: Property name not found on fl.transitions.Tween and there is no default value.
What I want is to process all three tweens in a single function, but I need to know which tween it was. It is of course possible to make three separate functions, one for each tween, but that is just not proper.

i add eventlistener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER) to some movieclip. but when i write: addChild(event.target) it doesnt work.
More info: i have several rectangles on the stage. when movie starts, they all get alpha 0.3, when you mouse over any of them they get alpha 1 with tween. But i made it so that, rectangles are located over the each other. and i want to make it so, that when you mouse over any rectangle it comes to front, but it doesnt work with addChild(event.target).To try it at your own, just create 3 different sized boxes and give then instance names: square_mc, square2_mc, square3_mc and copy+paste this code.

Can I change an event target's name? or it's an only-read property? I've been googling it but to no avail... For example, say this is my button code:

if trace the event target's name, you get buttonOne. But what I need to do is have the event's target's name to become buttonOne1. because I already have a button with the instance name. That's my setup, not the way I would do it OF COURSE, but this is the way the unique file is setup for my aunt, to have two set of buttons that calls the same image...(not the thumbnail issue I had before)... so the Question: is there a way to add a letter or remove a letter from the event target's name? You know how you can add a letter to the beginning of an array like buttonsArray.unshift(newButton)....can you do the same thing with an event.target.name?

I made this file, test1.fla where a movieclip named mc1 contains two other mcs. Then I wrote some simple code to make the target of the event (in this case a mouse event) shrink a little.
Here's the code I've used:

When I test this movie, only the selected mc that I hover is the one that shrinks, the other does not shrink (I am talking about those guys inside mc1). However I have done a similar file called test2.fla in which I replaced the nested mc's with shapes, the code is exactly the same, but in this case it's mc1 that shrinks, I mean no matter what shape I hover with mouse, both shrink.
I know (think so) that this is because of event propagation, but why do these two files react in a different manner? Is it becase the mc's inside mc1 can also be a display object container, but shapes cannot?
