ActionScript 2.0 :: Controlling An Actual Robot With A Flash GUI?
Apr 12, 2004
I was just wondering how the heck I can connect the two - xml socket? I'm not sure how to start googling this topic.I want to use my flash apps for more than just web functionality, I want control over the things outside my computer!

I'm working on a project where I need to animate multiple robots picking up parts and dropping them. I've attached a quick demo of the kind of movement I need.At the moment I have a Part MovieClip inside a Robot MovieClip (so it will rotate with the robot) What I can't work out how to do smoothly is, how do I release this Part Movie Clip so I can transfer it to another robot & rotate it following the second robot.I can't seem to copy/paste the Part's last position from the 1st Robot's animation to the 2nd Robot without it changing scale/position. Leaving me to basically position a new copy of the Part MovieClip until it sort of lines up with the old parts and switching between the two in the timeline.

For the first time we are planning on making an autonomous robot which would be based on macromedia flash.
1. A map of the entire room would be created in macromedia flash. I have already been able to achieve this part. In a text file i give the coordinates of the walls and obstacles. When flash is executed it uses the "lineto" function to create the walls and environment.
2. Now the start position of the robot is decided by the user and also the end goal in the environment. The coordinates of these points can be found by using "getproperty" function. I have been able to get this too.
3. Now once the environment is entered and the start and end positions, i need to write some algorithm which shows the path my robot would take. I did hunt online and found some of them based on the A star algorithm. but they are way tooooo complex. And dont know how to incorporate them into my project.
4. If i can get that done then the next step is breaking that path into smaller segments and sending the data for each segment out of the computer to a oopic microcontroller board which will control the motors of the robot.I am under the impression that "XMLSocket" function will let me send data out from the serial port. If not then probably i could incorporate flash into Visual Basic and get that data out.
Using FMX:I have a scene in which a robot runs around an "arena". It has two bump sensors. When a bump sensor comes into contact with the arena, it registers a collision with that sensor, and backs up and moves accordingly.
I already have code for precisely locating the position of the sensor when it hits something. What I want to do is:Have the robot run through the arena for a while, and everytime it bumps into an object (there are "rocks" in the arena), to write that exact location (x,y) to a list of some sort, or perhaps an array. Idealy I would like to write each value to an external text file.
This is where the cool stuff comes in. I am going to use the newly created "bump map" to tell the next robot where not to go.I just can't think of a good way to make a giant list of variables like I would need here. If only I could save the traces for these variables...
As I can read it from this article the maximum square bitmap Flash can handle is 4,095 x 4,095 (which results in 16,769,025 pixels and bla-bla-bla). So, they say if I try to go to 4,096 x 4,096, I'll fail. But I have tried to load and display a bitmap image sized 4,096 x 4,096, and it worked well. Then, I even tried an image sized 5000 x 5000, and that was alright too. What do I not understand? What are the actual limits and how to calculate them?
I get this out put (each row is a different element) and I don't know how to convert it in to a readable value.
it should be number with 9-10 digits. from what I have seen in other sites regarding this specific data (this is the value of the tempo in a midi file) - it looks something like this: "tempo is 06 96 27 (in hexa format)"
these values are ByteArray type. how do I convert them to the readable numbers (or perhaps they contain text)?
I have made an analog clock in adobe flash CS5 and want to make it a proper application. When i create an exe file it will run in flash player or firefox etc., which i dont want. Visual Basic 8 could not help me either.
So my question is: How do i make a real, self running and self installing application for this flash clock?
There are hundreds of clocks to download on the net, which run on there own and do not open in flash player. How is this done?
I want to build a flash webstore. I here just to ask if someone can tell me some actual flash store running in the web. I may use AS3+PHP+mySQL and some XML.
I'm working with cart software called PinnacleCart. It's a pretty good system, I use it mainly because of the flexibility in the attributes fields, and our products require alot of customization. The obvious solution here is to add in a Flash customizer, to make it easier for prospective clients to see the changes being made to the items. Inside of the cart software I can select images to upload. I thought about stripping out the validation so I can upload .swf files (edit the product page php to embed if it's a swf file) and go from there.
Now here is the tough part, for usability reasons I want to remove all the actual attribute options - So the logic is simple, if SWF = true then don't display attributes. So, from here I assume when the person clicks 'add to cart' I need to run some javascript to grab the attributes from flash, assign them to the javascript attributes, then proceed as normal.
I have seen that some websites offer talking characters (very human looking avatars), but I do not want to pay HUGE money for those. So I started thinking about some of the cartoons I used to watch and if there was a talking computer, their way of visually portraying speech was with an equalizer.
For the "robot", I would just have 2 dots for the eyes, a nose, and a "mouth", but this mouth would really be an equalizer, and I could animate that with flash so that when there is loud sound, the mouth would open wider than it would for a soft sound ( if you watch an equalizer, the bars go way up and turn red when the music is loud, and remain low and green when sound is soft )
The only web technology that I imagine could do such a thing is flash, but I know very very little flash. I have been searching and searching and searching and all of the equalizer tutorials I have found are just bars with random movements that do not sync with the audio.
i have prepared a login screee. using shared object i have saved username and password, now i want to know the sol path. Is there any way to actually retrieve the shared object local path.like C:Documents and Settings[userName]Application DataMacromediaFlash Player#SharedObjectsXXXXXlocalhost ext.sol
i am working on the xml carousel code from gotoandlearn.com, and i was wondering if there's a way to change the AS and xml to make one button load an external MC instead of the content txt.I am assuming i have to change the xml script inside flash, the actual xml file and add an MC.If anybody is familiar with that code please i need some help, this is the code:
Ive tried looking in a whole bunch of threads for a solution to this probably common issue but to no avail.I have a bunch of objects of same type on the stage which are generated through code.Inside these objects which are generally at x=300 on the stage.
stage1 is the stage object I pass into my class. The trace output is as follows
(x=2.3, y=0) , 2.3 0
Now im expecting some values in there somewhere to indicate its actual location on the stage, ie, x=300.This isnt happening.Whats the correct syntax i should be using.
I have a problem positioning a Flash element inside a div tag. The problem is, that the flash element is changing it's size based on the user input. I need a way how I can dynamically get the actual size of the flash element, and to change the behavior of the div element the flash is integrated in. actually I want to place it in the middle of the div. right now I gave the flash element width and height of 100% but that way I can not center the element inside the div...
I would like to implement an inspection time task using Actionscript. The idea is to dynamically change the time interval between masked and unmasked images based on user responses. The "inspection time" is defined as the interval at which the user achieves certain accuracy. There are various factors affecting the accuracy of that interval: monitor refresh rate, flash vm frame rate, Timer event accuracy, render time. Anything else? How do I determine the actual inverval the user sees? High accuracy is required, since typical performance is from 20 to 80 msec on that task. I assume the limiting factor is the monitor refresh rate. If it's 60Hz, I would only be able to increment by 16.7msec.
I was wondering if there is a way to make the actual stage dynamic to the content loaded in the flash file.
Firstly the method I am using is importing a external swf to the stage into a container called container. The main stage, lets call it index, is still on default size, and I want this to expand dynamically as content is loaded in. page1 may be 900px width, page2 may be 500px width, and as I load the content the index stage should expand the width to that of the page loaded. Some steps I have tried but did not work.
if page1 button is pressed stage.stageHeight = 900; - not working (how do I set stage size in as3)made a movieclip in page 1 spanning the page size and called it p1_stage so I can reference the data from there. trace(container.p1_stage.height); gives this error: TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties. at index_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()
So I have a movie clip associated with an external class in the linkage dialog. I put that movie clip on the stage. I have another external class that contains some code (not for the movie clip but for the stage). When I access the custom properties of the class in the actual flash file (not the external code) everything works fine. For example.myMovieClip.explodeTheCode = true;works in the main movie. However, it doesn't work in the external flash file when I have a reference to that movie clip.myRefToCustomMovieclip.explodeTheCode = true fails! It throws an error. In java, I'd just import the custom class the movie clip is linked to and then I can call all the extra custom methods on the movie clip in the external class I want. However, this does nothing. I still can't access any properties. So my question is, how do I access the custom features of a movie clip (that is linked to a custom class) from an external code file. It works in the movie, but not in the external source code.
Everything is embedded in an HTML site. The HTML loads a preloader that then loads the actual flash movie. Inside this movie I created a few buttons, inside a scroll bar movie clip. I want the buttons to load a whole new movie inside the same html. The code I'm using in the button is simply:
on(release) { loadMovie("new_movie.swf", 0); }
The problem is that it works beautifully in the Flash movie tester but doesn't do anything when tested inside the browser, embedded in the HTML. I think the problem is that the HTML embeds as an object the first movie, the preloader for the menu movie, not the menu movie itself.
I have researched the subject for some time now and still haven't figure it out.I use midas3 library (Midi-actionscript3) to import midi to flash. I get each note-item on a timeline. I get the divisions value (192) and all of the "GET-TEMPO" elements are equal to 81.I tried a lot of combinations to get the actual time of the midi but still no good (timeline*192/60 for example). The reason I know it is not synchronized to the actual time is that when I visualize the notes as simple rectangles in flash - I check if they appear exactly to what the mp3 file plays (I have converted the midi file to this mp3 using simple conversion program)I have read a lot about how all is calculated but still haven't figure out the number I need to use to get it right (timeline * MysteriusConstant = ReaTIME, what is the value of MysteriusConstant? is it really constant? and if not how do I calculate how it is changed?)
I am trying to get the stage width of the FLA in as3. Obviously, stage.stageWidth works well, the only issue is that when viewing the the SWF in an HTML page when you are zoomed in or out it gives you the relative width of your current view. For example, my stage width is 800x600 and when I trace out the stage.stageWidth it is showing up as 800 as long as I am viewing in my browser at 100 percecent, but once I zoom out in my browser the stageWidth gets traced out as a smaller number. Does anyone know how I can dynamically get the stageWidth of the FLA and have it not change regardless of how you are viewing the HTML page
I am trying to retrieve my SWF's referring document filename. For example, if index.html is calling mymovie.swf, I want to return index.html. I know this can be done through a combination of scripting and flashVars, but I would like to avoid that for security purposes. The flashVars variables can be seen by anyone who knows how to view source. Is there a way to accomplish this solely in Actionscript? or Flex?
[URL]Basically, I would like to have an xml gallery, grid alignment... and to be able to use an actual scrollbar to look through the thumbnails.I tried to do this at home but got weird results, IE when scrolling down the thumbnails would actually scroll up etc.
I have converted my MPEG video recorded from my camcorder to FLV to use on "Flash CS4" using "Adobe Media Converter". But the FLV playback on the "Flash player 10" is alot smaller than the playback of the MPEG video on "VLC". Is there anyway to adjust any properties to get the FLV to the actual size of the MPEG video?
I've been messing around with hittest and I can't figure out how to detect when the actual content of the MC collides with the other's, rather than just detecting when the bounding boxes collide.
increase the actual workspace. Not the size of my stage but the actual box that is around the stage. Mines a light gray. Its just I have stuff the needs to be way way off screen and there seems to be a limit on how far the project extends.
I like to know is "where, exactly, are you drawing that glyph?" The TextField class provides the methods getBounds and getCharBoundaries, but these methods return rectangles that extend far beyond the actual bounds of the whole text object or the individual character, respectively.
var b:Sprite = new Sprite(); b.graphics.lineStyle(1,0xFF0000); var r:Rectangle = text.getCharBoundaries(4);
[Code].....
Is there any way to get more precise information about the actual visual bounds of text glyphs in ActionScript?
I'd like to get the actual height of a component after adding some children.
When inspecting the variables tab in debug mode, I see 2 different height variables:$height (which contains the correct value: 138) and height/_height (which contains a wrong value: 10).
I guess that the display is not updated and so I'm not getting the correct height using component.height, but how can I get the value in $height?
