So on my scene is one button and a movie clip.
and so far i have it that when you click the button the movie clip plays and the cookie breaks and the fortune animates out.
my question, is their a way to generate random quotes or "fortunes" every time you play the movie clip. like can their be dynamic text inside the movie clip that randomly picks one of the fortune to display?
I'm helping w/ the website at our church and came across the "Flash Random Quotes" tutorial here on kirupa.com at:url..How can I do something like this, but I want the quotes to randomly display about every 10 seconds, as long as the page is open.I don't want to only have one, single random quote on page load.I'm tasked to have a random display of ongoing "testimonies" on our church website. Right now, I'm using jquery, but it's quirky (as you can see below), but the worst thing is, it isn't random - it loads the testimonies in order that they are listed in the sidebar.php file. So, everybody that visits reads the same few testimonies at the beginning, and doesn't see the other ones.I'd rather try and use Flash to pull random testimonies from the quotes file ... but I don't want it to only show one ... I want it to show a random testimony, then about 10 seconds later, show another random one, etc.

Should I not use a Dynamic Text field and create a text field using the var.

Is there a line or two that I can add to this that would prevent it from choosing the previously pick number again?I mean it can use it again, just not twice in a row.
When a user enters the website, it will pull text from some location (possibly an XML file) and load it into a text field. The trick is that I want it to randomly load a different chunk of text in each time the user opens the site. There are about 25 different small pieces of text I want to randomly load.
I'm thinking of using XML to store the 25 different text sentences, but am open to other ideas.
The desired affect is simple: I have a single button... with each click I want it to load text into a dynamic text field and load a corresponding picture or movieclip.There are only three unique text/image combinations- after its displayed the third, with the next click I want it to just start over. All the text functions perfectly with each click.
The problem is:I use "createEmptyMovieClip" then use the resulting clip as a loader clip.. With the first click I want a movieclip from the library to load, so I use the "attachMovie" method- it displays the first library fine.With the next click I want to load an external swf- so I call the "loadMovie" method of the loaderclip... The external swf loads just fine replacing the first library clip.The third clip is where I have problems... now I want to load another library item into the loaderclip... so I tried using the attachMovie method again but the external swf remains static... then with the next click, I discover the first library item no longer loads and the external swf remains still playing- it's like once it's been loaded into the loaderclip it cant be moved...
So I tried adding the "unloadMovie" method in the code for the third click.. it successfully removed the swf... but the next line of code immediately after the unload statement, doesn't work. The line calls the attachMovie method for the loaderclip... but the library item doesnt load... Oddly enough, with the next click, the first library item now does load as if everything's fine... It seems like you cant use the unloadMovie and attachMovie on the same executing code? if that makes any sense... the basic idea was that if I couldnt get the attachmovie method to replace the loaded external swf, then I would use the unload method to remove it, then have code immediately after, to then execute the attachMovie method... but it still doesnt load the library clip. and I know it's not a type-o, because when I comment out the loadMovie and unloadMovie statements, it loads both the library items perfectly ? I've written some code that takes user input and adds it to some other static text which is then sent to php to be written to a text file. The file is just plain text but has the .xml extension so it can be used as a source of data. Because of the XML content the text has to contain quotes so I am looking for ways to escape the double quote characters with " or using the alternative method of using a mixture of double and single quotes to differentiate content I want in the text file and the quotes that define the boundary of the text string. The code is working but the resultant XML looks wrong, with double quotes being written as " even though I used the double/single quote method, so I'm a bit baffled why this is happening. Here's my code:

All the double quotes are being written as " which is the escape character instead of the actual character - anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it?
When loading a text file how can I keep the apostrophe and quotes without the jibberish.

I also want the text strings to appear in the text box for random intervals between 500 and 3000 milliseconds.
While I've found tutorials here and elsewhere on loading one element from an array, usually triggered by a button, I don't know how to combine/alter it with the other elements.So I want this movieclip on the stage randomly flashing phrases from an array, some for a barely perceptible time, and others for a readable time.
I've been putting data into an array via XML, and then selecting at random an image string to load in a pic at random. But whilst doing this, I wanted to remove the String from the Array that I have just used, so I don't get repetition of the same image in the output. I initially thought that pop would remove the string I had just used - But of course it Removes the last value in the Array instead, which doesn't really help.
Ok - so how about randomizing the data once inside the Array, after it has been pulled in from XML!? That way I can load in the 'last' image, and then pop it out! Keeping a randomized selection of images each time 'it' is loaded

I have a dynamic text field that is loading an external .txt file with html coding in it. I can get the text to load and display properly, however I now want to make a custom scrollbar and I have no clue how to even get it to work.I want to make a custom one instead of using the component one. It doesn't even have to be a traditional scrollbar, I would much rather just use an up and down arrows. In the past I've just used buttons and placed AS directly onto them. However I guess you can't do that in AS3 so I'm lost!

I have got a dynamic text field that has had number placed into it by a using voting. What I'm trying to do is get actionscript to check the number (which I have assigned a variable to) and then based on if its less then 2, equal to 2 or more than 2 to get it to load a frame of another movieclip at a certain frame. Sorry not explaining it very well but heres the code:

votesForBatman is the variable I assigned to the final number in the Dynamic text field, with finalvoteresults being the movieclip that I want to load based on the votesForBatman dynamic text field variable. All are in the same movieclip so should not be an issue with_root or anything like that... Is it even possible to get a variable to load a movieclip?
