I'm making a flash site that displays random quotes in a dynamic text box... well, I wish I could do that but I really don't know how :S. I tried searching in the forums but the word "quote" is too popular and I only get random movement, random animation etc.

Right now, I'm using jquery, but it's quirky (as you can see below), but the worst thing is, it isn't random - it loads the testimonies in order that they are listed in the sidebar.php file. So, everybody that visits reads the same few testimonies at the beginning, and doesn't see the other ones.I'd rather try and use Flash to pull random testimonies from the quotes file ... but I don't want it to only show one ... I want it to show a random testimony, then about 10 seconds later, show another random one, etc.

and so far i have it that when you click the button the movie clip plays and the cookie breaks and the fortune animates out.
my question, is their a way to generate random quotes or "fortunes" every time you play the movie clip. like can their be dynamic text inside the movie clip that randomly picks one of the fortune to display?
I though this would work but unfortunately I am not pulling the txt files into the field.
It is definitley giving me random feedback.
There are ten quotes in a folder: Suzuki_quotes/quote1.txt etc
Should I not use a Dynamic Text field and create a text field using the var.

I have a dynamic text field with htmlText that renders quotes as the straight double quotes as opposed to curl quotes ("smart quotes" if you're M$). Does anyone know how to get Flash to display curly quotes in dynamic text boxes?

View 9 RepliesI have been making a memory game, where words are shown to the user. Once they have memorised the words they go to the next screen where the words that they have memorised are shown. They then have to drag each word into a "correct" place and a "wrong" place. I now want to edit it so that I can use two arrays one for correct words and one for wrong words. I want to generate random words from each of these arrays. I have sort of worked out how this is possible to do but using dynamic text, but am I correct in thinking that the whole dragging the words thing is not possible with dynamic text. I'm trying to make a website which loads and displays a random photograph each time someone visits it. I already know how to preload a photo but in this case the photos are quite big, so I want to preload the RANDOM photo with the site at the beginning of the site loading process. A very simplistic approach is to make 20 or something versions of the site, each with a different photo but this would be very, er... simplistic. I usually have a site.swf, a preloader.swf which loads the site, and I use no frames in my site.swf.

If that is not possible, than could their alpha's be random but not any lower than 50%. I know AS3 does 0-1 but how would you force it to not be lower than a certain number?

I have tried:-

I've written some code that takes user input and adds it to some other static text which is then sent to php to be written to a text file. The file is just plain text but has the .xml extension so it can be used as a source of data. Because of the XML content the text has to contain quotes so I am looking for ways to escape the double quote characters with " or using the alternative method of using a mixture of double and single quotes to differentiate content I want in the text file and the quotes that define the boundary of the text string. The code is working but the resultant XML looks wrong, with double quotes being written as " even though I used the double/single quote method, so I'm a bit baffled why this is happening. Here's my code:

All the double quotes are being written as " which is the escape character instead of the actual character - anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it?

I'm trying to avoid useing a button to send the number from A to B, and instead am trying to use an event listener that sends the number when A loads background.jpg; but the number never gets sent (I start with B open already, and then open A). I've gotten this to work with an onRelease event for a button , so i know the LocalConnection coding works, but as I said I want to avoid using a button to send the number. I'm sure it's right in front of me but i've got no clue why it isn't working, so I defer to wiser minds.

With the var daylight set to '0' or '1', a couple of mc's ('sky','lights') are told to jump to frame 1 or 5, but it seems that my if-loop doesn't work well. I placed a dynamic textfield in this same mc which displays the var directly from the PHP-script to see if the var is imported correctly and that works fine. I hope I made myself clear
I'm working on a Flash presentation, and I have a lot of text pages with buttons and movie clips on. The problem I have is that all subheads are set to size 35pt using Helvetica Neue Heavy, but on a couple of the pages a random subhead is displaying a lot larger than 35pt (I'd say 50pt) but it is definitely set to size 35pt in the Character palette. I have no idea why this is happening and it's driving me mad.

View 1 RepliesThe first questions was a calculation with the correct answer 5 or five. I have created an input text box with a variable ans1. Instance for the input text is Q1Input. I made a button with the following button script:

Typing a correct answer gets me to a wrong message (frame 3) not correct (frame 2). When I trace(ans1) it seems that the input text box is passing teh formatting data with the value thus giveing me WRONG.
Whenever I test or publish a CS5 movie that uses TLF text (no matter which font), the .swf displays all elements but the text. There's simply nothing there. I'm on a mac with Snow Leopard, 10.6.7. This only happens as soon as I pass the 1000 frame limit (before, everything displays fine). Reaching wit's end here. Anyone know what causes this, and more specifically, how to solve it?
