A question on naming objects and nameing of strings. A string has quotations "I am a string"......Q.1 If i have a movieclip on stage like an empty movieclip and i wanted to refer to the object in my code as below. As an example my movieclip is called mc1.Do i use 'mc1' single quotes....

I used to have a little text panel (that sat with the color, swatches, and align panels) that I was able to open up and edit text size, color, underline, etc with. It had a much better text editing ability then the properties panel, seeing as the properties panel does not even bother to allow me to underline text or to highlight and edit a single word in a whole text box. Now I don't have it, I can't find the damn thing anywhere, and I want it back. How can I get it?

I'm not sure that all fonts even support left and right double quotation marks (?).
at any rate... is there a relatively simple way to resolve this? maybe scanning the strings for the character entities and replacing them with single or double quotes?
does anyone know if Flash can recognize the ASCII entity number (e.g. ') more readily than the ASCII entity name (e.g. &rsquo?? That may be a moot point as i would have to somehow convert/replace with the entity number anyways..
I've managed to piece together a flash website with my limited as3 knowledge. The text is loaded from external text files and styled with an external css file.
It's working perfectly in Firefox and Explorer but it only works SOME of the time in Safari (on my mac).It's hit and miss. Sometimes it styles the text sometimes it doesn't.

I have a dynamic text field with htmlText that renders quotes as the straight double quotes as opposed to curl quotes ("smart quotes" if you're M$). Does anyone know how to get Flash to display curly quotes in dynamic text boxes?

Right now, I'm using jquery, but it's quirky (as you can see below), but the worst thing is, it isn't random - it loads the testimonies in order that they are listed in the sidebar.php file. So, everybody that visits reads the same few testimonies at the beginning, and doesn't see the other ones.I'd rather try and use Flash to pull random testimonies from the quotes file ... but I don't want it to only show one ... I want it to show a random testimony, then about 10 seconds later, show another random one, etc.

and so far i have it that when you click the button the movie clip plays and the cookie breaks and the fortune animates out.
my question, is their a way to generate random quotes or "fortunes" every time you play the movie clip. like can their be dynamic text inside the movie clip that randomly picks one of the fortune to display?
I though this would work but unfortunately I am not pulling the txt files into the field.

I'm making a flash site that displays random quotes in a dynamic text box... well, I wish I could do that but I really don't know how :S. I tried searching in the forums but the word "quote" is too popular and I only get random movement, random animation etc.
View 14 RepliesI've written some code that takes user input and adds it to some other static text which is then sent to php to be written to a text file. The file is just plain text but has the .xml extension so it can be used as a source of data. Because of the XML content the text has to contain quotes so I am looking for ways to escape the double quote characters with " or using the alternative method of using a mixture of double and single quotes to differentiate content I want in the text file and the quotes that define the boundary of the text string. The code is working but the resultant XML looks wrong, with double quotes being written as " even though I used the double/single quote method, so I'm a bit baffled why this is happening. Here's my code:

All the double quotes are being written as " which is the escape character instead of the actual character - anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it?

View 3 RepliesI have a class that loads data from a text file and puts it into an array called tdv.importedTxtArray (public var).In a separate class i have written [code]The infoArray does not then contain the imported text however because tdv.importedTxtArray is not given its popper contents until about 1/2 a second after the tdvLoader class executes (i.e: when Event.COMPLETE is run and the array is populated with strings from the external text file). Subsequently in the code above infoArray is set to a blank array.How can i get the code in my separate class to ''wait' until tdv.importedTxtArray is properly populated before accessing it.

Admittedly, it's a little buggy here and there, however - I have not had too many issues with it to date. Recently, however, I updated the main / root .swf slightly - just changed some copy, and added a slide or two throughout. When visiting the site, this main .swf dynamically loads any content .swfs required - the html, and these .swfs were not touched.
Upon uploading the new main .swf only - everything works fun, until it loads one of the content .swfs - this always loads in the top left of the browser, rather than the center top of the browser.

I used the new FLVPlayback component to progressively download a flv video. When I test the movie locally it works fine, but when I embed the flash into a html page then upload all the materials (html, main swf, flv video and skin swf) the video plays but the playback controls are missing.

son.swf has 2 objects inside its library: Character (Base Class = "flash.display.Sprite", Class = "Character") CharacterHead (Base Class = "flash.display.Sprite", Class = "CharacterHead")
The "Character" object has inside 1 instance of "CharacterHead" and "CharacterHead" does not have a instance name asociated with it.

I have built an Mp3 player for my site and users are allowed to put their own music into the playlist. The only problem I have run into now is that if the URL becomes invalid later, the player will stop at that song and the user would have to press next to skip to the next song. Is there any way to get the player to do this on it's own?

I am trying to implement htmlText for a text component as the returned string is in html format (with the html tags etc). If I put a text=.... i get the full text, but with the tags (which i want converted to html). So i use htmlText=.... and it formats it fine, but cuts half the text from the variable. The text im supposed to get back has tons of html tags, and maybe its cutting it somewhere because of the tag its not able to escape... How do i fix this?

I know I can strip the doublequotes, but don't want to go that route if I can avoid it. I've tried replacing to double quotes with hex codes before passing the text via parameter to my flash file, but the text string always cuts off at the hex code, the same as if the double quote were present in the string. I am loading external text file in flash and i am trying to trace progress so i could use it to show user how far loading is completed.
And i have i problem as i only get my trace after my text is completly loaded and shown in flash. only than i see progress in my trace window. Do you have any idea why? I am using one frame on one layer i have text field that i need for my text and another layer with code

I am using the transition preloader on url]... to load in external swfs (http:url...). I have Spark's calendar component on one of the external swfs. All text appears fine when testing the calendar page itself but the text seems to disappear when it's loaded as an external swf into the main file. Is this a path issue?
View 3 RepliesMy website is coming along nicely, just starting to add some content and to make it nice and easy for my client to edit their own content i thought I'd make all the text external.
Works fine in the external swf, when I publish that file alone the text shows up perfectly. But when I load this same swf into the parent movieclip (the main website) the text is invisible. I've put in a trace function and the parent MC can output what is in the dynamic box, but it's invisible in the player.
