ActionScript 2.0 :: Load Variables From Loaded SWF's
Jan 6, 2005
I am developing a flash board game which entails moving a piece around a board as a result of throwing a dice (the person will either move the dice themselves or it will move according to the outcome of the throw). When they land on particular squares I am going to have a random question (this is going to be a loaded SWF) appear that will have a multiple choice questions.Can I save the result of 'multiple choice question' within the main movie / separate movie and then use this variable ?

I have an empty SWF that's sole purpose is to call loadMovieNum and start the project. Each loaded movie has a few variables defined within them - unique to those loaded SWFs. Instead of declaring all the variables in each SWF can I declare all of them in one place, in the first frame of the empty loader it all starts from? I'm thinking I can then declare a variable which each loaded movie can increment as needed for me.

I'm writing code that takes data from mysql that's processed by a PHP script. It's actually a bit bizarre, at least to me. Anyway, here's some basic AS3 code that's moving toward what I want to do:
var loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
var urlRequest:URLRequest=new URLRequest("receive.php");
urlRequest.method=URLRequestMethod.GET;[code]....
For some reason, the statement "trace(evt.target.data);" produces a whole pile of garbled text before the actual stuff that it's supposed to show Because of problem #1, I've had to include a throwaway variable at the beginning, otherwise the first variable I try to pass into AS3 comes back as undefined. This causes errors when I run my flash movie in the IDE, but when I run it from the browser it doesn't seem to have any effect.But this is the strangest thing of all whenever I make any changes to the database (and subsequently try to load data from different variables), the new variables come back as undefined. For example, let's say that I add another entry to the database, and decide to load students 2, 3, and 4 instead of 1, 2, and 3. When I do that, any new data I've added comes back as undefined, even though when I view the PHP output in my browser, it looks just fine.
And now for the REALLY bizarre part: I'll copy that output, paste it into my PHP script as an echo statement, comment everything else out, and my flash movie runs fine. Even though the output from the PHP script is exactly the same, it gives me errors.

I am trying to load variables from a text file, and have them available from then onwards in the movie, globally so to speak.
While I can read the variable values in a loader function which executes when the text file is loaded, I don't seem to be able to keep those variables available afterwards.

What I'm trying to do is get the total bytes of all the files I want to load and display the percentage loaded of total bytes and bytes loaded of all the files. Its a slideshow so i want all the files loaded and then it will play. I've looked at bulk-loader but it wasn't what I needed. The image are loaded from an xml file. I think I would need to create an Array and then find out the total bytes but I don't know how to reference the loader in the progress.

I am creating a flash program to open other flash programs (load swf files), and change their textfields to my own extended textfield class. This is to capture all text written to screen using a textfield object. Here is what I am doing:
1. If a textfield has been created, the event is captured
2. I want to replace the textfield with my own class extending textfield
*3. Any further access to the original textfield for value changes can be captured, and would update the replaced extended textfield object
The problem is if in their original code, at sometime, the text value of textfield is changed (mainly through textFieldObj.text = some_value) , I don't know how to capture this event.
This cannot be captured by event.CHANGE which requires the user input (ie: keyboard strokes) into the actual text field and changing the text through the code: textFieldObj.text = some_value does not trigger the event.
Here is a simplified example:
// FlashMovie.fla START -------------------------------------------
// any DisplayObjects (such as a created textfield) created will be captured
// by ChildAdded()
this.addEventListener(Event.ADDED, ChildAdded);

I'm having a SWF call functions from another SWF loaded in the first one with the Loader class. There are no problems as long as the target SWF does not contain any TLF TextFields created on stage by authoring time interface. As soon as I place a dynamic textfield on the stage of the loaded SWF, the main SWF (the loader) fails to call any of the functions within the SWF that is being loaded.Static text does not seem to present problems and neither do TextFields created via ActionScript.Also, is it possible to access variables of the parent SWF?

I am having a problem accessing variables in a loaded flash movie.
As my understanding goes (someone please correct me if I am wrong), if I load a flash movie into a parent movie (i.e. 'loadMovie("myMovie", emptyClip);'), I should be able to access the loaded movie's variables using dot-syntax.
As an example, say I have two movies: MainMovie.swf, and SubMovie.swf. SubMovie.swf contains a (global) variable called someText. After loading SubMovie into an empty movie clip called "emptyClip", MainMovie.swf should be able to access the aforementioned variable by saying "emptyClip.someText", right....? Well, when I try this I keep getting an undefined value for the variable.

so I have menu.swf that uses loadClip to bring in data.swf
Depending on what button is pressed I want menu to read menuHeight = 4600; from data.swf
in data swf I declare the var as _root.menuHeight = 4600;
and in menu.swf I try to read it as normal. menuHeight.
Shouldnt this work since the _root. of data.swf is the _root. of menu.swf?

in my script, when a button is clicked it loads a movie clip from the library onto the stage
but what that movie clip does is supposed to be dependant on what button is being pressed. however that movie clip being loaded onto the stage doesn't seem to recognize or load any of the variables from the stage.
its as if, since the movie clip does not exist when the fla is initially run, the movie clip doesnt recognize previously existing variables.. or doesnt recognize any variables outside of itself

If I load an SWF file, is it possible for the pre-loader to access and change a string variable inside the loaded swf? Is there any special way to do this or would it be a simple case of loadedMC.variable = "new value"

I'm trying to debug my movie, but the variables in the debugger are greyed out and I can't expand them. It also doesn't show the progress through the code. I think it's related to having loaded an external swf.

I have a project that works quite beautifully right now. I have come to my next task. Creating swfs that are loaded into another swf. This newly loaded swf needs to grab some variables from the main swf's document class or global variables class that I have created. I have set the class path as such that it can access the classes as needed. I did not set a document class.
Structure of loaded swf:
core.swf -> loadedBackground.swf -> interactive.swf
1.) Classes are all located in a folder titled classes
2.) cores.swf is outside the classes folder and is linked to document class within the classes folder: BuildCourse.as
3.) swfs folder contains the loadedBackground.swf and interactive.swf
4.) How can interactive.swf grab variables from the main.swf after it is compiled?

I'm loading external swf's in a main swf, which are contained into a container "thisMC" which is a movieClip.
Now I've got various variables in these external swf's and I want to access these variables into my main swf.
eg - var myString:Variable = thisMC.myNumber;
trace("Whats the value "+myString);
o/p Whats the value undefined.so if myString is a variable that i've defined in the main swf and myNumber is a variable defined in the external swf, if I try accessing it like this , this is what I'm getting.

I'm tryin to do catalog on CD using flash. There will be 15 pages of items w/ the selections. The coding I'm using for their options is from this: [URL] Now my question is, since I can't use a DB because it's on a CD, I have to pass the variables through flash. But when they are done making all their selections how do I make an externally loaded SWF using this command:
[Code]....
read the final values that were selected on the specified pages? I've read lots of the threads concering passing variables and none of them. Also if anyone knows of any way to hold a DB on a CD and be able to write to it as well as read from it lemme know

I'm working in a modular app and I'm having trouble passing variables between a Parent and it's loaded Child SWF file. The Child SWF has a single object called hotSpot_mc. The Parent has a frame called frame_mc to load the Child. I'm trying to pass the value of bHotSpot, which is turned on and off when the user mouses over the MovieClip. Testing shows that the value is being set in the Child but not in the Parent, where it remains undefined. Should I be using shared objects or do I just have to use better targeting?
Here is the parent SWF
Code:
// Load the child SWF into frame_mc
loadBackground("Room_1.swf");
function loadBackground(backgroundName:String):Void {
