There are 12 color variables, and each answer adds a number to each variable.At the end of the quiz, all the variables are put into an array, and sorted. Then the 3 highest variables are displayed. What I want to do is sort them by value.
Basically I have some fruit and veg objects, and I want to add 5 randomly to the scene. So the first time you run the application, you might get a banana, apple, carrot, kiwi and grape. Then another time it might be apple, kiwi, cabbage, pineapple and banana.
But I want to make it based on how many times they have been seen previously. So if the count variables are as shown above, how can I sort the fruit and veg objects in to order, so I only add the lowest 5? Bearing in mind, the numbers might all be the same. I.e. the first time it's played, the count for all objects will be 0. So I want to choose 5 random fruit/veg with the lowest value.
I assumed the best way to do this would be to put them in to an array, sort it and select [0], [1], [2], [3] and [4]. But how can I put the values in to the array and sort them without losing the fruit/veg they are associated with?
I.e. if I end up with an array of {2,3,5,5,5,5,8}, I have no idea which fruit and veg they represent.

I'm having a problem getting my Flash project to receive a variable from a PHP file. I'm sure that the PHP file is receiving the data from flash, but nothing is returned. I have tried every method possible almost, and I still get nothing. It's been several days that I've been troubleshooting, and it's getting frustrating. I've googled for hours and done a pretty thorough actionscript.org search, but to no avail.Basic breakdown:I have a button that submits the score from a game, and then tells the user whether or not they have earned a high score. Flash uses URLVariables to tell the PHP the score, action (submit in this case) and the game the user is playing. PHP then returns a value for the variable '$status'. However, I can not seem to access this at all from flash.When I test the movie in flash, it generates this error:

I am working with code where the variable "k" is a counter. I stripped out the extraneous stuff from the code below - so essentially when the function onExamPlusClick is called, the counter "k" and the minutes of an activity in an array both increment (as well as other things not shown). I'd like to return "k" as well as "activity[0].minutes" to the main program. Since the function is a MouseEvent, I'm unable to change "void" to "number"... and not sure how to return (pass) those variables back to the ain program.

The variable id which is declared globally is changed in the function goNext. I need the variable to retain the value, but it gets reset as the function is not returning. I tried the return method but that's not working either.
Iam trying to do a highscore list which is generated on a website as Xml and then send to Flash. I have got the Xml to be loaded into Flash but the probelm is that i want them to be sorted in so the highest score is on the top and then its going to down to the lowest score.

View 5 Repliesok so i've been stuck on this for a while...What i'm trying to do is create a function that updates a global variable (randomVar) that is itself a parameter in the function e.g

Basically, i thought randomVar and vari were the same so when vari was changed randomVar would too but that's not the case. So how do i make the parameter equal the new value(5). I want to repeat the function using different variables so putting randomVar = vari in the function is not possible.

I've downloaded some code that finds and displays fields from an attribute table of a feature, from my limited knowledge it seems to be adding this data into an array collection, the problem is I need the data fields to be displayed in alphabetical order, or in the order they are originally stored. However, on a bright note its coming!!!! So far, everything is going well and I am now seeing the light with AS3I do have a question on returning a variable from a function that loads an external CSS. This particular function is located inside a LoadStyleSheet.as class along with another public function that sets text properties to fields when accessed. What I am looking for is accessing the stylesheet after its been loaded in another class. I know in AS2 I could use the Delegate method for something similar to this situation. Not sure what the next step is for AS3. Anyhow, function script is below.

I'm currently working as part of team of developers and we've run into an issue with our FMS project.In our site the user is able to record video of themselves which is turned into flvs and stored by the FMS. These videos are played back at a later time. The site works fine but intermittently stops recording new videos or streaming previously recorded videos.The only solution at this point is to restart the server. The server logs show that the onDisconnect event handler is running when users terminate their sessions and we can see that the number of active connections does not appear to be exceeding the limit on the server. There are no runtime errors to indicate that anything has gone wrong.From looking at output from the app it just seems like the publish and unpublish event handlers stop running but nothing actually breaks.The user doesn't realize anything is wrong until they try to watch their videos only to get a blank screen.
We're wondering if perhaps it is a garbage collection issue? Either the garbage collector in the FMS is running and taking a really long time to reload the app or perhaps it isn't running at all and somewhere some memory is overloading.

I have a flex datagrid. it is bound to an array collection. if the user sorts on column X it works fine. then, if the user causes the array collection to change, the datagrid forgets that it was sorted on column X.what do I need to do to preserve this sort preference so that the new array data will appear sorted by column X?

I'm writing code that takes data from mysql that's processed by a PHP script. It's actually a bit bizarre, at least to me. Anyway, here's some basic AS3 code that's moving toward what I want to do:

For some reason, the statement "trace(evt.target.data);" produces a whole pile of garbled text before the actual stuff that it's supposed to show Because of problem #1, I've had to include a throwaway variable at the beginning, otherwise the first variable I try to pass into AS3 comes back as undefined. This causes errors when I run my flash movie in the IDE, but when I run it from the browser it doesn't seem to have any effect.But this is the strangest thing of all whenever I make any changes to the database (and subsequently try to load data from different variables), the new variables come back as undefined. For example, let's say that I add another entry to the database, and decide to load students 2, 3, and 4 instead of 1, 2, and 3. When I do that, any new data I've added comes back as undefined, even though when I view the PHP output in my browser, it looks just fine.
And now for the REALLY bizarre part: I'll copy that output, paste it into my PHP script as an echo statement, comment everything else out, and my flash movie runs fine. Even though the output from the PHP script is exactly the same, it gives me errors.
Created an editable flex grid which exposes a method called getGridData() to javascript. I am using the JSON.encode() method of the [url]....library to convert the grid object's dataProvider into JSON before returning it.
