ActionScript 3.0 :: Returning Data From A Function Called Via Event.COMPLETE?
Aug 3, 2010
i am trying to return an XML object, but having issues. The object is only created via an Event.complete function. I need to return the XML created from my loadXML function via my grabXMLfromFile function.
Code:
function grabXMLFromFile(attrPathToXML:String):XML {
var fileUrl:String = attrPathToXML;
var myUrlRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest(fileUrl);

So, I'm trying to load resources, add them to a dictionary, and have a drawing method search through that dictionary and draw based on certain predicates. I have a function that iterates through an Vector of Strings, calling on an instance of Loader to load them instantiated as a URLRequest.
private function loadImages(urls:Vector.<String>):void
{
var loader:Loader = new Loader();
[Code].....
So the issue is: Only the first images in my Vector are drawing. Upon further inspection, I found that the completeHandler was only being called once (I put a trace in the complete handler to check). However, the Loader is invoking load everytime the loop iterates. I tried instantiating separate loaders for each resource, just to see if it would work, but I had no luck with that. Do I need to make separate loaders and event handlers? Or am I just not using Loader correctly?

I am attempting to build a generic XMLLoader class with a static LOAD method, with the intent to use it as follows...
private var _data:XML = XMLLoader.LOAD("path/to/xml_file.xml");
Then I could use it in any client and go-to-town with e4x.
The general problem I am having is with the URLLoader's COMPLETE event, which necessarily calls a different function to set the XML data.This is preventing me from being able to return the XML from the LOAD method, since the data is being set outside that function. Obviously I need to wait for the COMPLETE event in order to make sure the data is available.
I though, perhaps, I could create and return a _waitForData function, which recursively calls itself until the _data is set, then returns the data. But it seems redundant (since Event.COMPLETE is doing that anyway), and the way I tried it generates a stack overflow error.[code]...

I am working with code where the variable "k" is a counter. I stripped out the extraneous stuff from the code below - so essentially when the function onExamPlusClick is called, the counter "k" and the minutes of an activity in an array both increment (as well as other things not shown). I'd like to return "k" as well as "activity[0].minutes" to the main program. Since the function is a MouseEvent, I'm unable to change "void" to "number"... and not sure how to return (pass) those variables back to the ain program.

Is there some way in Flex where I can tell when all of the data has finished binding to my AdvancedDataGrid? I have a bunch of label functions that run and I need to a busy cursor while the grid gets populated. I then want to remove it when it's all done. And also fire another event.

I have a queue of messages that I would like to send to a URL and I would like to remove messages from that queue only after I am sure they have been successfully sent. To do this I need to know in the COMPLETE event for the URLLoader exactly what data was sent so that I can remove the correct message from the queue.That is if I have something like this.
var urlRequest:URLRequest = new URLRequest(targetUrl);
var urlLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
urlLoader.dataFormat = URLLoaderDataFormat.TEXT;
[code].....

I am trying to create an event listener to check that a function has completed before the next action is run. In simple terms I have a module that is opened and closed via two functions... module_open() and module_close().Each function has tween elements that must complete before the next element is processed... i.e the next function, etc.This is the code I have ( have attempted to create an event listener but I seem doing something wrong. I am not even sure that it is possible to create an event listener that checks for a function finishing before calling the next function.
Code:
function onAbout(event:Event):void {
module_close()
module_close.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onClose_Complete);

I have created a class named XMLclass and inside that class there is a function named returnFillColor.The function looks like this:
Code:
public function returnFillColor(XMLchild:uint):String{
var xmlLoader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
var xmlData:XML = new XML();
[code]....
When i call this function from my main class, it returns nothing because the XML wasn't done loading. I've double-checked this by adding addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE) outside the function.Is there any way to return data from the xml-file with just one function?(like adding event.Complete to the returnFillColor-function)

I am having an issue with a class I'm working on. I currently load an image as a bitmap and store its data into regState:BitmapData so that I may make new instances of that image later on. When I test if I can use the loaded data at a later time with my newBitmapIntance() function, it says that regState is null. I'm lost as to why this is the case, since it works flawlessly to create an instance of itself in my loadContent() function.
Class so far For reference:
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;

in the middle of the downloading process I physically disconnect the internet connection. the download stalls - but after aproximately 30 seconds downloadSuccessful is invoked, although only half of the data was downloaded. how can I make sure that the data to be downloaded is complete and correct?

I am loading in binary files with the url class which can be quite large 10mb + and it works fine on my server but another server I am testing on it can sometimes not work. Sometimes it will not load the file and other times it will only load about 20% and it throw a complete event??? Then of course other times it works fine. This server is https maybe that has something to do this it?

I have a singleton class that looks something roughly like this (only with more bindable public properties):
public class Session extends EventDispatcher
{
private var _Id:String;
private static const _instance:Session = new Session( SingletonLock );
private static const SESSID_CHANGED:String = 'SessionIdChanged';
[Code]...
The abnormal behavior I'm discovering is that the event listeners registered through registerOnSessionChange are indeed being called when the session Id changes, but the MXML data binding expression is not updating. I've tried all combinations of dispatching the event during the capture phase, and making it not cancelable, but to no avail. My understanding of [Bindable (event= ...)] is that the MXML should update the url string when the event specified is dispatched, so what am I doing wrong or misunderstanding?
Note: I realize there are lots of different ways of doing the singleton pattern in Actionscript, but unless the way I am doing it is actually causing my problem somehow,

I've got some code that loads multiple swf files -- it works great, EXCEPT when the swf files are really small - then they load before the listeners are called - so the "COMPLETE" is never called. So my app just never works.
Here is Actionscript Code:
var _swfLoader:Loader;
var _swfRequest:URLRequest;
var allSWF:Array = new Array();
function loadSWFS():void{
allSWF = ["f1.swf","g2.swf","bob.swf"];
[Code] .....
My currentSwfProgress function always seems to work - so if i load 5 swf files, i will get the trace from the currentSwfProgress 5 times -- but not from the loadComplete function. I have been reading though, that the ProgressEvent.PROGRESS listener is unreliable in certain browsers (chrome for one). I think if I could somehow call the loadComplete function from currentSwfProgress function - that would work, but i do not know how to get the "EVENT" needed in loadComplete from the "ProgressEvent" used in the currentSwfProgress. Maybe something like this...
Actionscript Code:
function currentSwfProgress(
e:ProgressEvent):void{
if (e.target.bytesLoaded == e.target.bytesTotal){
trace("1 - FILE LOADED!");
loadComplete(e.get.the.parent.event())
}}

I've got a system that loads in little avatar images. When the avatar is loaded in I resize it to 24x24.
Here's some ActionScript Code:
var urlReq:URLRequest = new URLRequest( String(playerInfo.vector.scalar.(@id == "AvatarURL")) );
var ldr:Loader = new Loader();
ldr.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, resizeAvatar);
ldr.load(urlReq);
avatar.addChild(ldr);
container.addChild(avatar);
Here is the resizeAvatar function...
ActionScript Code:
// Resizes the avatar to fit correctly
public function resizeAvatar( e:Event ):void {
e.target.content.width = 24;
e.target.content.height = 24;
e.target.content.smoothing = true;
}
Now I'm using the e.target.content item because as far as I can see that's the only way to get at a way or resizing the image dynamically (using an Array isn't an option). Here's the funny part, the above code works perfectly in the Flash IDE but when on a live site that Event.COMPLETE is not calling!? The image is loading in but it never gets resized.

I rune the following code from TestClass:
ActionScript Code:
handler.loadFromFile("test5.txt");
dataset.generateComplete();[code]....
However, why does dataset.generateComplete(); get called before onFileLoaded(event:Event)?I can only assume that this is the case, as var pointList:Array = myHandler.getPointList(); returns Null, and when I run some tests with trace statements,I can see that onFileLoaded (event:Event) is seemingly called after generateComplete() Is the URLLoader process running in parallel to the rest of the application?

The Following code seems to only be working when i have editable="true" on the Advanced Data Grid. But I don't want it it be editable.
The docs don't say anything about it needing to be editable, and i dont see why it should need to be.

a_data_list.addEventListener(AdvancedDataGridEvent.ITEM_FOCUS_IN, clickedRow);
public function clickedRow(event:AdvancedDataGridEvent):void
{
trace("datagrid line was clicked");

This seems simple to do yet I can not find the right way to do it. I have a button here's the code:
public function goForward(event:MouseEvent):void{
s++;
if (s == xmlData.Player.length()){
s = 0;
}}
Now all I want to do is have this function return a number so I can set up a new variable. I know I need to replace the "void" with "Number" data type and use "return" in the function. But I just can't find the right way to write the code. "s" is initially set to zero so basically all I want is when "s" increments up, it changes the new variable as well( call it newNum if you want).
