ActionScript 3.0 :: Dataset.generateComplete(); Get Called Before OnFileLoaded(event:Event)?

Jan 12, 2009

I rune the following code from TestClass:

ActionScript Code:
handler.loadFromFile("test5.txt");
dataset.generateComplete();[code]....

However, why does dataset.generateComplete(); get called before onFileLoaded(event:Event)?I can only assume that this is the case, as var pointList:Array = myHandler.getPointList(); returns Null, and when I run some tests with trace statements,I can see that onFileLoaded (event:Event) is seemingly called after generateComplete() Is the URLLoader process running in parallel to the rest of the application?

ActionScript 3 :: Listening For NewRecord Event To Be Called?

Mar 16, 2011

I am sending an event when an sql query returns no matches so that I can continue with the addition to the database.. It seems like actionscript is requiring that I attach the listener to something, but I don't really have any variables that seem like logical candidates at the point where I am in my code. I just want to listen for the isNewRecord event to be called so that I can then run the insert query; right now it's saying call to possibly undefined method for addEventListerner and for dispatchEvent.

Flex :: Loader Event Complete Function Only Being Called Once

Feb 21, 2011

So, I'm trying to load resources, add them to a dictionary, and have a drawing method search through that dictionary and draw based on certain predicates. I have a function that iterates through an Vector of Strings, calling on an instance of Loader to load them instantiated as a URLRequest.

private function loadImages(urls:Vector.<String>):void
{
var loader:Loader = new Loader();

[Code].....

So the issue is: Only the first images in my Vector are drawing. Upon further inspection, I found that the completeHandler was only being called once (I put a trace in the complete handler to check). However, the Loader is invoking load everytime the loop iterates. I tried instantiating separate loaders for each resource, just to see if it would work, but I had no luck with that. Do I need to make separate loaders and event handlers? Or am I just not using Loader correctly?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Custom Event Can't Be Recasted Second Time Called?

Sep 21, 2011

I have a base class for buttons which handles button basics like mouse listeners etc.Now I'm trying to extend it to also have the possibility to store an event (yes event, not event type) that is supposed to be dispatched on click.So I have my CustomEvent (extending Event) that I pass into the base class and store it with type Event.Outside, in the event listener I have an event argument typed as CustomEvent.First time I click it works fine and event is CustomEvent traces true in the event handler.But the second time I click, event is CustomEvent traces false and I get the "type coercion failed" error (cannot convert Event to CustomEvent):

Code: TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.events::Event@29d3b7e1 to com.package.events.CustomEvent.
at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEventFunction()
at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEvent()
at com.package.display.buttons::ButtonBase/onClick()

If I trace event is CustomEvent in the base class before the event is dispatched it always traces true.So it seems something happens to the event in the dispatcher functions, but what boggles me is that the base class always sees the event as CustomEvent while the event listener thinks it is CustomEvent first time only.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Executes In Another Class That's Called From A Dispatched Event Elsewhere Still Run Procedurally?

If I change the value of a variable that two different classes can see (in a custom global class, for instance), and then immediately dispatch an event that the other class is listening for, will tracing that variable in the listening class reflect the variable's new value? In other words, does code that executes in another class that's called from a dispatched event elsewhere still run procedurally, or is there some sort of asynchronous thing going on, where the class that dispatched continues on to the next line of code in its own class without regard for what may or may not happen in the other class?

Flex :: Event Flows For Built-in Event And Custom Event

Aug 22, 2011

I hava a custom component and it contains a child icon. If I add a mouse-click event listener to both component(click-listener1) and icon(click-listener2), the event dispatched sequence is click-listener2, then click-listener1. I can understand it. But if I add a custom event to component (listener1), and mouse-click event to icon(listener2), when icon is clicked, the component will dispatch the custom event. In my test, the event dispatched sequence is listener1, then listener2. It doesn't match with event-bubbles rule.

In my opinion The custom event is dispatched in listener2, which triggers listener1. Why event flow sequence is not listener2, listener1?

Actionscript 3 :: Flex's FileReference.save() Can Only Be Called In A User Event Handler

Jul 21, 2010

I need to call FileReference.save() after a web service call has completed, but this method has a restriction: "In Flash Player, you can only call this method successfully in response to a user event (for example, in an event handler for a mouse click or keypress event). Otherwise, calling this method results in Flash Player throwing an Error exception." (from the documentation here)

This restriction is a bit vague. Does it mean that I can only call the FileReference.save() method from within an event handler function that is registered as a listener for certain types of user events? If so then exactly which user events are valid? (Perhaps there's an event that will never be dispatched by user interaction with my application and I could register an event handler function for that event type and make the save() call from within that function?)

My difficulty is that I can't safely call the FileReference.save() method until my web service returns with the data that will be used as the argument of the FileReference.save() method call, so the event that triggers the FileReference.save() call is actually a ResultEvent rather than a user event, and I'm leery of dispatching a new (faux) user event type in order to be able to trigger the FileReference.save() call unless it's definitely a user event that would never be dispatched as a result of actual user interaction with my application.

In a nutshell what I'm doing now is this: I have a function that is registered as a handler for a button click. In this function I make my web service call to fetch data from the server. I also have a result handler function which gets invoked when the web service call completes, and it's in here that I want to call the FileReference.save() method since it's at this point that I know that the data is ready to be saved to a file. But the aforementioned restriction is blocking me from doing this -- I get an error:

Error #2176: Certain actions, such as those that display a pop-up window, may only be invoked upon user interaction, for example by a mouse click or button press.

I've tried many things to get around this such as creating a second mouse click event handler function with the FileReference.save() call within and calling it after a timeout interval (to give the web service time to complete), but I keep running into the same error -- maybe that approach doesn't work since the second function isn't registered as an event listener for the event type used as its argument.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Event Handling & Architecture Design - Event Dispatched Automatically At The End Of An Animation?

Jan 3, 2010

The app I want to build is an interactive map for a site I'm designing. In a nut shell, students looking to enter an exchange program should be able to use the map-image (as in, an actual 'map of the world') to preview possible destinations (I've attached an image of the two basic states to clarify).

After an introductory animation, I want a mouse-over to trigger a function that populates the map-image with a series of buttons. I need the buttons to be distributed according to information in an XML file (ie. x/y coords, some information text, and an animation to load upon being clicked). I want each button to call a mouse-over function that loads info data from an XML field and place it in a dynamic text field at the top. Then, I want each button, when clicked, to call a function that animates replacing the map-image with an image of the corresponding travel destination. Finally, I want a button on each image that will clear that image from the stage and call the function that populates the map so the process can start again.

I'm working out of a couple of books on AS3, but I'm a little hazy on how I ought to be constructing this thing. So here's the first place I've run aground: After the intro animation, I want the user to mouse-over the stage and have a second animation play (clearing away the introductory text), and I want the conclusion of the clearing animation to immediately call the map-populate function; but I don't want a mouse-over to have any effect until the introductory animation is finished. Is there an event dispatched automatically at the end of an animation? What is the event listener class?

I'm not sure if I should be storing each of these animations in an independent .fla file or if I should create them on all one timeline and have the program redirect to specific frames.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Asynchronous Keyboard Controls - Stop Listening To An Event As Soon As Another Event Has Been Dispatched?

Nov 1, 2009

i have a question to ask about asynchronous key controls This was what i did

[Code]...

and i checked with [URL]...?newspage=6249 and it looked more or less the same, so why is it that when i move my character and when i hold down a key, it just keeps on listerning to that keypress event listener, instead of just executing the other event. So say, i tap left and after which i tap right, it will work just fine, but if i hold left and tap right, the event listerner will still be listening to the left key. So, i was wondering could anyone point me in a direction as to how should i make my code stop listening to an event as soon as another event has been dispatched?

Actionscript 3 :: Why Are Event Types Typically Stored Within An Event's Class Definition

Dec 16, 2010

In all the ActionScript examples I come across, people write custom events with the types defined inside the custom event's class definition. But, in my experience, it makes more sense for the object dispatching an event to own its own definition of that event (which, in ActionScript 3, is a String).

[EDIT: After writing this question, I've found there to be cases for both positions -- in some situations, event types should be stored on the event object, and, in others, they should be stored on the object dispatching the event.]

ActionScript 3.0 :: Proper Listener On Tween Event Inside Mouse Event

Feb 23, 2011

My stage has about 25 buttons on it. Each button when pressed to tweens the background to some random x/y coordinates and then loads an external swf file.This is all working, but the timing is off. How can I wait for the initial background tween to end before I make the loader call to the .swf file.Currently each button's behavior is called on the MouseEvent.CLICK event which calls a function that knows its unique filename.swf. I know you can add the MOTION_FINISH even to the tween event but then I would have to call a new function and lose track of the button that initially called it.
