ActionScript 3.0 :: Custom Event Can't Be Recasted Second Time Called?
Sep 21, 2011
I have a base class for buttons which handles button basics like mouse listeners etc.Now I'm trying to extend it to also have the possibility to store an event (yes event, not event type) that is supposed to be dispatched on click.So I have my CustomEvent (extending Event) that I pass into the base class and store it with type Event.Outside, in the event listener I have an event argument typed as CustomEvent.First time I click it works fine and event is CustomEvent traces true in the event handler.But the second time I click, event is CustomEvent traces false and I get the "type coercion failed" error (cannot convert Event to CustomEvent):
Code: TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.events::Event@29d3b7e1 to com.package.events.CustomEvent.
at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEventFunction()
at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEvent()
at com.package.display.buttons::ButtonBase/onClick()
If I trace event is CustomEvent in the base class before the event is dispatched it always traces true.So it seems something happens to the event in the dispatcher functions, but what boggles me is that the base class always sees the event as CustomEvent while the event listener thinks it is CustomEvent first time only.

I want the stage to react every time some changes are made to certain objects. Is there a way to write custom Event? I could of course modify this object, but I would like to know if there is any more OOP way to do it. And events ARE OOP, ain't they?

This is NOT duplicate of my earlier post (its is slightly different)But this is similar issue with similar error but its not the same error The error I am getting now is below while dispatching the custom event from my custom component
TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert events::MapEvent@a74ab51 to flash.events.MouseEvent.
dispatchEvent(new MapEvent(MapEvent.CLICKED_ON_MAP));
Note: The error in my earlier post is giving below error message
Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.events::Event@81ecb79 to com.events.ShopEvent
The difference here are two things, the earlier error is while converting flash event to custom event and now this one is while converting custom event to flash event and secondly, I have no clue why it is trying to convert to the mouseevent where I am just dispatching my custom event with proper listeners.
This is my custome event
package events
{
import flash.events.Event;
import ui.map.MapElement;

I rune the following code from TestClass:
ActionScript Code:
handler.loadFromFile("test5.txt");
dataset.generateComplete();[code]....
However, why does dataset.generateComplete(); get called before onFileLoaded(event:Event)?I can only assume that this is the case, as var pointList:Array = myHandler.getPointList(); returns Null, and when I run some tests with trace statements,I can see that onFileLoaded (event:Event) is seemingly called after generateComplete() Is the URLLoader process running in parallel to the rest of the application?

I hava a custom component and it contains a child icon. If I add a mouse-click event listener to both component(click-listener1) and icon(click-listener2), the event dispatched sequence is click-listener2, then click-listener1. I can understand it. But if I add a custom event to component (listener1), and mouse-click event to icon(listener2), when icon is clicked, the component will dispatch the custom event. In my test, the event dispatched sequence is listener1, then listener2. It doesn't match with event-bubbles rule.
In my opinion The custom event is dispatched in listener2, which triggers listener1. Why event flow sequence is not listener2, listener1?
In component.
icon.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, iconClickHandler);
private function iconClickHandler(event:MouseEvent):void

I recently used fl.controls.List to implement a list with custom CellRenderer.I did it by implementing ICellRenderer:[code]Inside MyRenderer I added a fl.controls.Button, then set its label. However, when the List is rendered (by dynamically adding item into its dataProvider), the button body is not rendered, only the label is rendered. When I move my mouse over it, the button is then properly rendered.I found this strange, then tried use myButton.drawNow() in constructor. The problem seem to be solved. Now the button is rendered, but the label is not at the very center of the button (it's a bit towards right). Then, when I move my mouse over it again, the label move to the center, and everything's ok.This may be a minor problem, but I just wonder why this is happening. Why must drawNow() to be called? Why the label is not properly placed even when drawNow() is called?

I have the following situation:I have an event handler, that displays small messages in my application's statusbar.These messages get passes through by dispatching events from custom components.A simple message could be like "HTTP Error" or so.Now, the main event listener, in the main application file, listens to the event dispatched by any custom component,but seems to refuse listening to events dispatched by custom AS classes.Here is my code for the custom event:
package main.events
{
import flash.events.Event;[code]..
So to sum it all up:
- The event listener listens to the custom event dispatched by any custom component.
- The event listener does not listen to the custom event duspatched by an AS class.
Those who wonder, the event really gets dispatched, that's why I added a trace call.

i am a bit embarassed to ask this, but i do this so much i have to ask. Occasionally, i need to pass/handle custom events on the fly. Rather than creating a whole custom event class, i will just do something like
Code:
myObject.dispatchEvent(new Event('thisCustomEvent'));
//and then handle it later

I have a custom Flex 4.5 component (to be used in a List) -
Game.mxml (represents a clickable playing table in a card game):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:ItemRenderer [code].......
But I never see the "game clicked: " trace. Does anybody please know why? I'm probably missing something minor, because I can see the "Clicked: 8946" trace.

This is similar to the question asked here. I am dispatching custom event "ShopEvent" but i am getting error "Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.events::Event@81ecb79 to com.events.ShopEvent"Note: Error is thrown from the parent custom component (3rd code snippet), I have added more details thereThis is my custom event. I'm using the FETStationPanels from FlashEff2 with Flex 3. Unfortunately, it is garbling some of the letters.Imagine that I've got three buttons. If any of the buttons are selected a titleWindow opens. Inside the titleWindow is some text pulled from a database that has the FETStationPanels effect applied to it, and an image. The first button that is clicked (it doesn't matter which one) will have garbled text. If I select another button, then the effect is fine and everything displays okay.
The FlashEff2 effect is fired on the creationComplete event of the TitleWindow.
I had a resize effect on the TitleWindow. I removed it, because I thought that that might be the problem. I put in a static height for the TitleWindow, but that didn't work either.I also tried using callLater and setting a timer to delay the appearance of the image until well after the effect had ended, but that didn't work, either.

I'm working on a site, for kids, which has a small avatar in the corner that talks.The avatar is a flash file and the plan is to determine what it says through a mix of javascript and ajax.
Unfortunately when I make the flash file play an Mp3 file through JavaScript, I can't seem to stop the sound.. so when I keep clicking on a link which causes it to talk, I hear the sound repeated x times.
The odd thing is, when I attach the very same code to a button in flash, there seems to be no such limitation. It seems as if it won't store anything in global variables when calling from JavaScript.

The function shown below is trying to take data from a text input and refresh the data displayed. I am trying to get it to do so when the enter key is pressed. But it only refreshes on the second time enter is pressed. The "Enter pressed" is traced twice, but the "Enter Frame" is only shown after the second "Enter pressed" trace.

I've been trying to figure out a way to add a transition script to my existing AS2 code so I can make my MC (picture) transition each time a new photo is called. Using Flash CS4 and calling images through an XML document. The code works perfectly right now, except it only uses the "fade alpha" technique as an image transition. I need to use a different transition method. I prefer something a little funky if possible, but ultimately I need something like the built in "Blinds" compnent to work. Here is the current code:

So updateDisplayList is for laying out, positioning and sizing a component's children. It seems a waste to me, however, to have all that code running every time a render is called, even if no changes have been made to the relevant properties or child properties.The way I get around this for performance's sake (working on mobile) is to set a flag inside of my overridden updateDisplayList that lets a big part of my own sizing/positioning code run only the first time.Is this a bad idea/ big mistake? I just can't see the benefit to letting it run every time otherwise if I don't expect anything that affects sizing/positioning to change.

I am trying to understand event propagation in Flex framework and have a following doubt on it:
Scenario: I have a built-in component DropDownList on change of which I want to create a custom event refreshPreview and want to propagate it to a custom component PictureComponent.
In the custom component's mxml, I have added the Metadata directive as follows to register a refreshPreview event with the compiler
<fx:Metadata>
[Event(name="refreshPreview", type="flash.events.Event")]
</fx:Metadata>
Layout Details: In my main mxml application I have laid out DropDownList and the custom component such that both are siblings (i.e. have a common indirect parent)
e.g.
<s:Group id="contentGroup">
<s:Group id="formGroup">
<s:Form x="11"
[Code]....
I am seeing that the refreshPreview event is not getting propagated to the custom component.
I doubt this is because the built-in component is a sibling of the target (where the event got generated) and not a parent. how to make refreshPreview event propagate to custom component?

I have a Button that when clicked loads a Flex module in my AIR application. However,occasionally the Module fails to load the first time the button is clicked, but it works the second time it's clicked. When I debug it in the debugger the READY event is not fired so the remaining logic is never called.
var moduleInfo:IModuleInfo = ModuleManager.getModule(managedModule.url);
moduleInfo.addEventListener(ModuleEvent.READY, function(event:ModuleEvent):void {
trace("ModuleEvent.READY called.");

I am sending an event when an sql query returns no matches so that I can continue with the addition to the database.. It seems like actionscript is requiring that I attach the listener to something, but I don't really have any variables that seem like logical candidates at the point where I am in my code. I just want to listen for the isNewRecord event to be called so that I can then run the insert query; right now it's saying call to possibly undefined method for addEventListerner and for dispatchEvent.
public function addBG(BG:Number, datetime:String, batch:Boolean = false):void{
checkRecord('Gb', datetime, matchRecord);
addEventListener("isNewRecord", recordExists);
function recordExists(){
