ActionScript 2.0 :: Flash Gallery - Use Buttons To Scroll Through The Images
Jul 9, 2009
I am looking to make a flash 'gallery' in which you would use buttons to scroll through the images, much like this: [URL] Only using buttons to scroll, instead of the mouse position.

I am building a photo gallery in which the images are loaded into a frame_mc and the thumbs are loaded into a movieclip called thumbLoader. The gallery is going to have several categories, every category has its own button and is found on a separate keyframe on the main timeline. When I click the button of a specific category it goes to the appropriate category/gallery. I have a questions:I want to create a horizontal scroll pane for the category buttons but I really do not know the code. For a start, I know I'm going to make the buttons as movie clips, and the scroll pane has to scroll those movie clips. I want to have 2 direction buttons, one that scrolls the category buttons to the right, and the other one to the left.

I've gotten to chapter 5 in my AS 3.0 classroom book but I need to use wisdom today (CHAPTERS before I gain it for myself),I need to create a custom scroll bar with buttons that function just like the UIScrollBar but more visually suited to our projects. the boss demands it.
I found several tutorials on creating the custom scrollBar, however, they don't include the buttons and I'm unable to find a tutorial on how to create a button scroller (I figured I could link them both to my "info_txt" after creating them separately).
how to create an AS3 text scrollBar WITH buttons? how to create a nice scroll effect with buttons(if creating the scroll bar and buttons apart then linking them to the same text field is not possible or a faulty way to accomplish this).

I have about a dozen thumbnail images aligned in a 3 X 4 grid. The dimension of the stage is smaller then the 3 X 4 grid therefore I will need a vertical scroll bar to scroll through my images. In addition, whenever the user rolls over one of the images the edges would glow. Also, when the user clicks on one of the images, it will bring them to a separate frame. I was wondering how I would attempt to do this. Since I will be frequently adding new thumbnails, I heard that I should look into XML. If I am to do this using XML, I am confused as to how I would do this.

I built my gallery and import it a parent page (foo)... Sometimes the scroll of thumbnail scroll works... it is choppy.... Sometimes does not work at all.... When I view the movie outside of foo - it works beautifully...

I have the following scrip below, where I call some images through an XML, and create a gallery that every 3 seconds it moves to left, passing the pictures automatically. But my images are of different sizes in width, the height is the same.
var dados:XML = new XML();
dados.ignoreWhite = true;
dados.load("xml/" + _root.xmlport);

I am having problems getting images to scroll in flash. I have the images in a movie clip being loaded into a scroll plane, that works but in order for me to get the images to show up in the scroll plane I have to export the movie clip and have it load on the first frame. I can't do this because I have a preloader and its messing up my preloader. Is there anyway I can load that movie clip later in the movie and still have it show up in the scroll plane.

I have set up a small application which has a movieClip (named "GuruQuestions") with a mask over it, a scrollbar which you can grab and drag and currently, it does precisely what I want it to do.
However, my boss has decided he no longer wants a 'click and drag' scrollbar, and would instead like just 2 buttons to scroll, so essentially, when the user hovers over the button, it scrolls.
I have found several threads about using this method with dynamic text, but none for using a movieClip.

i couldn't find a tutorial on this matter so i sorta started making my own hypothesis... what i'm trying to do is: have a gallery of images automatically scrolling horizontally while having the set of images loop. like at[URL]..
here are a couple of my theories and questions for AS commands to have this work:
1) display a range of pixels of an image at certain positions, i.e. if gallery is scrolling to the left, leftmost image when its parts are disappearing out of the viewing area, they become visible at the right.
2) have two instances of each image and when an image is disappearing on left, the second instance of that image comes visible on the right. this I imagine would take up more HD space.
i guess what i was wondering more about is how jager did their gallery where there's only enough images are in a set to be viewed in the viewing area.

I have a feeling I will be a frequent visitor.creating a site for a client. The entire site will be in AS3, we're doing one long page with navigation that will always sit in a box to the left. When you click on a button in the nav, we want the site to scroll down to a certain section.

If I click on the index.html page on my local desktop then the main images (jpgs) are displayed high quality via IE8, however when I upload the swf and html page to my server when I access it via http the images are highly pixellated and low quality anyone know why on my desktop via the browser its fine, but when viewing through the server the images are low quality pixellated etc [URL]

I've built a flash XML gallery (using the kirupa tutorial) and i would like to change one thing: instead of having to wait between each image for a loading (even if it can be real quick) i'd prefer preload all images before, in the way the mcLoader class does (progressively). I've triyed some things like assigning a massLoad of the images on first frame, or loading (on first frame too) all images in a mcLoader hidden under the movieclip which loads the pictures found in the XML but none worked. I've triyed to change some lines in the code but it was a disaster too, as long as i don't really understand all the code (but only globally).

I have been trying to to trick out Chinnathambi's great photo Gallery with thumbnails project, but I want to have swf's load in instead of just images. I'm having a bit of a problem, I changed my xml targeting to have swf's instead of jpg's, the swf's load fine, the scroll function works but once the first swf is loaded in, it cashes the swf and whenever any of the other thumbnails are clicked, the cashed swf loads again, not the one in the xml for the just clicked thumbnail. This is driving me crazy, is there a way to empty the container MC on clicking the thumbnails?

Kirupa had written this fantastic tutorial: [URL] about creating a flash gallery using xml as the way of sorting the images and text for each. how to make it so flash takes any image and centers it in the masking area (for when using a vertical image with slightly different measurements).

so I made a flash photo gallery the other day and the images look fine when their on the server before they are pulled into flash via an xml file, but once they appear in the gallery within flash they appear to be washed out or desaturated a bit. At first they were under the Adobe RGB color profile but then I realized they had to be sRGB...I reuploaded the files and they are still slightly washed out. What am I doing wrong?, I want them to look the same as they do as individual files when their not pulled into flash.

the website I'm working on is my own website (we're photographers) (I can't link it as I don't have 50 posts here, so, google "Anna and Spencer" and it'll come up) . Specifcally, the portfolio section - annaandspencer.com > skip > portfolio.I've created a flash gallery of images embedded within buttons of varying sizes. I wanted the functionality of the image being 'pushed' in along with the button when clicked on.Well, this seems to have gotten me in some trouble. I can find no way to have the images load one at a time vs. all at once. As it is, it can overload a computer's buffer. It does for some computers, it doesn't for others. It definitely does in most macs (safari). So, they will always see the first gallery page and it will load correctly. However, when they click onto the second (or third) it seems like the images are not loading. When the images don't load immediately, you can click on one of the blank buttons and see even the larger image (it opens another browser) isn't loading either. After about 21 seconds, everything begins to load again. Then, for the next few pages, everything will load - and then a hiccup again, another pause of nothing loading for about 21 seconds - and then everything loads fine again.My original thought was to have it so that each image loads after the previous. As in img_1 loads, then img_2, then img_3. However, they are all seperate empty movies within the seperate thumbnails - I just can't get it to work.[code]
It does return the correct numbers/percentage on the dynamic test text I made on the parent frame containing all of the buttons (and updates from 0 to 100 as the image loads). However, I now can't pass -any- variables. The counter works, but I can't have anything outside of the onEnterFrame function recognize this. When I even try to read the value of the dynamic text that was changed, it only gives back the initial name instead of the current value of 100.I've tried everything I can think of (and find online). I'm out of ideas now. I've tried creating a variable outside of the onEnterFrame and referencing it within it, or setting it equal to percentage. Notta. It returns 0 every time. I have tried _root variables. I have tried _global variables. Nothing. Everytime, it returns whatever I first declared the global/root/whatever variable equal to when I first initizialized it (usually 0). I just need some way to be able to tell img1 (which is really main portfolio > button1 > img1) is loaded so it can then load img 2, and img 2 for img3, and so on.

I know ZERO about flash/actionscript and have been tasked with creating a vertical text/html scroller. This would act like a news ticker but would scroll several paragraphs of text with images vertically continuously.
Here is a sample of the data that i would like to scroll vertically:
<image>
some text here
some more text
<image>
more text
more text
This pattern would repeat and the script would continuously scroll the information. I will be pulling that data from XML as HTML but i think i have that part under control. Just cant seem to get a sample of scrolling html/text.

I have a flash image gallery that loads images through xml. Images have to be croped for thumbnails. So u have to have two folders, one for the thumbnails an another file for the big size images. I would like to know if there is a way to load only one image ( and not this image's thumbnail too) and with a script or something, to resize this image to get the thumbnail. To make my self clearer here is the xml code:
image../gallery_flash/imageGallery/images/watches/i1005.jpg image
thumb../gallery_flash/imageGallery/thumbs/watches/i1005.jpg thumb
(For some reason it doesnt show the xml right...) I dont want to have the line (thumb>../gallery_flash.), but only load one image and get the thumbnail also.

I'm building a Flash photo gallery, and I came up with a solution using Flash and XML which is very, very similar to the one in this tutorial: [URL]. The catch is, I'd like to preload all of the images listed in the XML array before showing the first picture. Simply using _framesloaded will obviously not work; I searched around a bit on Internet, but I haven't yet found a solution. I thought I might try using an external script in PHP or javascript and use fscommand() in Flash, but I wanted to post here to see if anyone could think of another (simpler) way.

I am trying to preload images for an image gallery ina flash movie.
i have the images externally loaded so as not to bloat the swf but how do i start a preload for all the images when someone gets to the home/front page, so that by the time they get to the image gallery everything is loaded in memory so there's no delay?

I just created my first website, but one of my AS3 XML image galleries are not working properly. I followed the XML Grid gallery tutorial at to "T" and am using it on 5 of my pages, however, the "PRODUCTS" will not load the "full" images.The thumbnails load, they decrease opacity when moused over, but once you click on one, the progress bar loads till complete and just stops. This problem, however, only occurred after I hosted it on When I test it (Ctrl+Enter) in Flash, test it in Dreamweaver or open the .html of it from my computer, everything works perfectly. It is only after I FTP upload all the files to iPage's server that this problem occurs. Is it a problem with Ipage?Are too many images trying to load??Furthermore, for some odd reason the 1st image, 4th row down on the "Products" page DOES load the full image but the others still dont and I can't for the life of me figure out why

I'm having two problems. First of all, the gallery loads all pictures at once. The more pictures in the XML file, the slower they all load. Secondly, I wanted the pictures to scroll in its _y coordinate, similar to Sugar Rhyme's website portfolio (see url]...).

I want to show even a bigger images onclick in flash, so, not a popup, but the images loading in a movieclip With shadow and close button. Cant get it to work! The hyperlink versions all open a new browser window. I just wat it to laod a movieclip or swf with the image suplied in the xml.

An image, like a jpeg, has a bunch of metadata stored in it. The "IPTC Core" metadata usually includes the photographers name, address, title, description, etc. Is there any way to access this information using AS3 so that, say, captions for images in a flash gallery could be generated automatically?

[URL] For reasons unknown to me, the xml gallery on the page above won't load in any of the images in Firefox. However it does work in IE7, as well as locally in Firefox, Safari and Opera. I have tried removing the whole site and re-uploading it, as well as updating the individual files separately but I still seem to have the same problem.
