ActionScript 2.0 :: Music - Optimize File Size And Performance?
Apr 28, 2006
i am looking to use a fair amount of music in a project that a user has dynamic control over. because file size is an issue i was wondering the best way in which to optimise file size and performance? i have noticed the loadSound command for retrieving it from a server and also considered using a linkage and not exporting in the first frame (if i do this how do i export it afterwards?).

I've been working with AS3 now for a few months and am making good progress in it (I'm a AS2 transfer student). However, on a project I'm working on I'm having a little issue with performance within the browser. I was wondering if anyone had some tips on how to optimize the following code as I include this object about 600 times in my flash to make a waterfall (which causes resource drain in the browser)?[code]...

There is a simple html page with intro video (.mp4 file). Video frame size is 1280*1024 (I need video to be as large as page up to 1280 px).
With such quality settings video file size is:
.mp4 = 42 mb (HD 1690*1080)
.flv = 32 mb (1280*1024, 25 fps)
For video playing I used as3 sample script (because there must be only playpause, replay, mute buttons with custom styles), like that
var strSource:String = "video.flv";
// create a new net connection, add event listener and connect
// to null because we don't have a media server
[Code]....
The problem is that I can't find a way to play it smoothly. It's loading in very annoying way, video is interrupted after each few seconds of playing.
I understand that the main problem is large video file size and hd quality, but may be there is some way to largely decrease .flv size or handle playback in more friendly way?

I want a site to have background music, but when I attach the music to the file it makes it quite large ...3 meg and the site is slow to load. Is there any way of having the music separate from the flash file and still have start stop music buttons?

I downloaded a flash template and have modified it to suit our company but there is something that I can't do. When the file loads in the browser, music immediately plays and loops until you click a button to stop the music. On our video page, we have video
that we need to play that has sound in it. How do I get the background music to stop when my video plays without having to go up and stop the music manually. The videos are loaded via an external XML document and there are no buttons in the FLA file to link code to. the website is [URL]

i have a large flash game with tons of graphics and music.within the game, i'll only be calling several different movieclips and sounds at a time.. for example, about 20 movieclips and 4 sounds.meanwhile there are about 1000 other movieclips and sounds in RAM waiting to be summoned.does anyone know if all these files in RAM negatively effects the speed and performance of the game? or will flash only pay attention to what's currently employed on the stage?

Normally when I have lets say two sorts of Events, the MouseEvent and the TouchEvent, what I then do is import flash.events.*; Would it save space/performance/whatever to specificly import the needed events?

On the home page of my website I have a Flash banner near the top, with a slideshow of my work. The problem is that the Flash file is 300k and takes a while to load on slower Internet connections, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me to optimise it. [URL].

Using Macromedia Flash Professional 8.
I have a website banner made in Flash. I have added a music file to it and Play and Stop buttons. I also have a Replay button to replay the banner animation once it stops.
I have put the music on a separate frame so that it will not play automatically when the banner loads. I have made the Play button direct to the frame the music is located at so that when clicked, it will go to that frame and play the music file.
The problem I am currently having is that if I click the Play button more than once, it will play the music file again on top of the current play-through.
So if I click Play, the music will play. Then if I click it again, the music will play again, but on top of the first instance of the music, so two instances of it will now be playing and it sounds horrible.
I would like to make it so that if you click Play when the music is playing, it will not play the music again until the music has stopped.

I've done quite a bit of digging but it's surprisingly difficult to find informed answers to these questions. I'm making a Flash game with a friend; as far as we can tell, the code is fine, but there are some serious framerate problems that seem entirely related to the graphics.
Is there a performance difference between Movieclips as JPGs and PNGs? Most of our graphics are imported as PNGs because they have transparent sections, but I don't know whether there is a performance difference between setting image compression to JPG or PNG within Flash itselfDoes turning on "Smoothing" for an image affect performance?Obviously larger graphics have more of a performance hit, but is there any benefit to splitting a large image into pieces? Example, changing a 2000*1000 background into two 1000*1000 pieces? One thing is most of our graphics are as much as twice the size in the library as they are displayed onscreen, then scaled in the code. We had wanted to make the game still look good when zoomed in/fullscreened but that doesn't seem practical so I'm planning on resizing all of the image files to their final size in the game and removing the scaling code. Hopefully that's the major part of the problem.

What is the most efficient way to accomplish this? With a timer or something like this;

I'm devloping some library classes for flocking/steering behaviours on large numbers of objects (2000+). I'm finding that at < 500 instances, performance is reasonable. As the numbers increase, framerate bogs down.
I've seen remarkable performance with libraries such as Flint or Box2D with ridiculous #'s of particles / objects, so it should be possible to optimize / refactor my code to be a bit better.
I'm aware of the basic optimizations, such as bitwise operations and optimized for loops. Are there any more fundamental approaches I should be considering? For example, currently each instance is a vector-based MovieClip. Would working with BitmapData be more efficient?

Will I take a big hit in performance using nested ViewStacks? Should I strive to handle all navigation in one ViewStack and push children manually or will the affected performance be negligible?
eg.

We have a medium size Flex 3.6 application that contains around 20 different page views (managed via a single lazy ViewStack) each having multiple components. Most use custom renderers.All model data is loaded at startup and changes to model instances are communicated via binding and/or collection change events.Once the user has viewed each page at least once, all page views are instantiated and happily listen to update events.Which in effect means that each time a model instance changes, all interested views receive that event and compute derived data or trigger item-renderers.I have tested and confirmed this behaviour in a proof-of-concept application. Even when setting a list to being invisible, it still listens to collection change events and invalidates any renderer affected.What would you do?

When I preview my flash file it says that the filesize is 29kb. However when I look at the properties of the outputted swf it's coming in a t 36kb. Which is the correct size? Also what extra information is being added to push it up by 7kb?

I made a preloader for my single scene movie and although the preloader is about 16k, when placed into frame 1 of the movie and tested, the frame is shown to have about 256k, which is larger than the movie it's loading. I've gone through all the files and made sure that export in frame 1 is not checked and made sure the publish settings also are set to export in frame 1.

I know there are performance loses if you don't specify variable types explicitly. Do ActionScript/Java developer in general prefer the use of the in classes or no?
public function hello():void
{
this.speaker.says("hello");
}
vs
speaker.says("hello")

I am working on this cd-rom and have just reached testing stage for part 1 (of 5). There are lots of interactive activities, video and animations. For the activities, I dont know if I am just too tired but there seems to be items which are visible on my .swf on my computer that sometimes are visible and sometimes are not visible on the cd-rom, also in testing yesterday there sere some activities that seemed to not be working correctly (Althought they perform fine on the desktop version, on a reset of the cd-rom they then seemed to work. Is there anything that I need to take into account for the code being read off a CD to make it more bullet proof? I am stressing out a bit at the Unknown factor- I cannot continue to produce this resource if I cannot guarantee how it will perform in real life?

However after it has been playing for about 15-20 seconds it sounds like it is layering another music file on top of the existing one and so on and so forth, so a couple of minutes

The SWF is defaultly about 1 meg. The music file is about 3 megs as well (total 4 megs).Once the SWF has finished loading, I would like the music file to play, and then loop indefinitely.I don't want to embed the music,because that will bloat the load time so much.Streaming seems like the obvious answer, but I am having trouble then with the music starting immediately after the load has finished. Additionally when you are streaming music you can't specify how many times to loop the sound?

I'm working on an animation where I have my "dog" fighting the evil vacuum cleaner. I got most of it to work the way I want it to.
1) I have movie clips entitled pepper_mc (where my dog is supposed to be walking), swirl (where a swirly-type symbol is supposed to spin over the dead vacuum's head), and vacuum_mc (where the evil vacuum is supposed to have a swinging arm (called vacuumarm_mc) that I created using the bone tool). When I add them to the stage and test them, the animations within the movie clips don't happen.
2) I have background music that I'd like to stop playing at the end of the animation, but I'm not sure how to do that. (using the stop(); actionscript doesn't help).Where am I going wrong? I'm using Flash Pro CS5.
Here's the file --> Pepper and the Vacuum of DOOM!

I'm trying to load music into a another file using the loadMovie method. This is my script:
ActionScript Code:
stop();
this.createEmptyMovieClip("musicContainer",20);
audioStatus = false;
trace(audioStatus);
[Code].....
As you can see, first I created an empty clip. Next step was to create a variable named "audioStatus" to know if the button has been pressed or not. It seems I'm doing something wrong because the movie is not loading the music and it-s not detecting my var.

The idea would be to have a song stop automatically if a user pushed play for another song.This is all the AS I have on the button right now:

I am trying to create a music animator. It will have bars that move up and down do the beat of the music. This is like windows media player where the music animations play. I want it to be verticle bars, where some are in sync with like the base and others are in sync with the tempo. Does anyone know of a tutorial for this? I am trying to emplement it within my website so that whatever music I am playing will auto control the bars and sync.
