ActionScript 3.0 :: Imports, Have Influence On Size/performance?
Oct 24, 2011
Normally when I have lets say two sorts of Events, the MouseEvent and the TouchEvent, what I then do is import flash.events.*; Would it save space/performance/whatever to specificly import the needed events?

My current project imports the following on the root time line
[Code]...
I then have a series of movieclips in my library that get loaded in as required at run time using addChild. In each of these movieclips I am having to use the same import commands or I get an error. Is there a way of me changing my code in some way so I only need to use the imports once in the main time line?

I often use the shortcut for Organize imports (CMD - SHIFT - O) in Flash Builder. Some times Flash Builder just removes all my imports (not the SDK) and I have to add them manually. Anyone else who have had this problem?

i have a large flash game with tons of graphics and music.within the game, i'll only be calling several different movieclips and sounds at a time.. for example, about 20 movieclips and 4 sounds.meanwhile there are about 1000 other movieclips and sounds in RAM waiting to be summoned.does anyone know if all these files in RAM negatively effects the speed and performance of the game? or will flash only pay attention to what's currently employed on the stage?

i am looking to use a fair amount of music in a project that a user has dynamic control over. because file size is an issue i was wondering the best way in which to optimise file size and performance? i have noticed the loadSound command for retrieving it from a server and also considered using a linkage and not exporting in the first frame (if i do this how do i export it afterwards?).

I've done quite a bit of digging but it's surprisingly difficult to find informed answers to these questions. I'm making a Flash game with a friend; as far as we can tell, the code is fine, but there are some serious framerate problems that seem entirely related to the graphics.
Is there a performance difference between Movieclips as JPGs and PNGs? Most of our graphics are imported as PNGs because they have transparent sections, but I don't know whether there is a performance difference between setting image compression to JPG or PNG within Flash itselfDoes turning on "Smoothing" for an image affect performance?Obviously larger graphics have more of a performance hit, but is there any benefit to splitting a large image into pieces? Example, changing a 2000*1000 background into two 1000*1000 pieces? One thing is most of our graphics are as much as twice the size in the library as they are displayed onscreen, then scaled in the code. We had wanted to make the game still look good when zoomed in/fullscreened but that doesn't seem practical so I'm planning on resizing all of the image files to their final size in the game and removing the scaling code. Hopefully that's the major part of the problem.

this is what i'm trying to accomplish; With a click on a movieclip (cannon_mc)a shot is being fired (ball_mc)
The longer mouse is down, the speed of wich the ball is fired with should increase.My question to you is;
What is the most efficient way to accomplish this? With a timer or something like this;

I'm devloping some library classes for flocking/steering behaviours on large numbers of objects (2000+). I'm finding that at < 500 instances, performance is reasonable. As the numbers increase, framerate bogs down.
I've seen remarkable performance with libraries such as Flint or Box2D with ridiculous #'s of particles / objects, so it should be possible to optimize / refactor my code to be a bit better.
I'm aware of the basic optimizations, such as bitwise operations and optimized for loops. Are there any more fundamental approaches I should be considering? For example, currently each instance is a vector-based MovieClip. Would working with BitmapData be more efficient?

Will I take a big hit in performance using nested ViewStacks? Should I strive to handle all navigation in one ViewStack and push children manually or will the affected performance be negligible?
eg.
<viewstack>
<tabnavigator />
<tabnavigator />
<tabnavigator />
</viewstack>

We have a medium size Flex 3.6 application that contains around 20 different page views (managed via a single lazy ViewStack) each having multiple components. Most use custom renderers.All model data is loaded at startup and changes to model instances are communicated via binding and/or collection change events.Once the user has viewed each page at least once, all page views are instantiated and happily listen to update events.Which in effect means that each time a model instance changes, all interested views receive that event and compute derived data or trigger item-renderers.I have tested and confirmed this behaviour in a proof-of-concept application. Even when setting a list to being invisible, it still listens to collection change events and invalidates any renderer affected.What would you do?

i have two seperate movie clips on two seperate layers on the front page of my template. (loaded dynamically) the layers are on top of one another.
the two movie clips work fine one their own on the template, but when i put them both on the template and I press their respective buttons the TOP movieclip's buttons control the BOTTOM movie clips actions. it's crazy. i've tried to move them around but then it's just the reversed - the bottom buttons control the top movieclip.

Is there a way to customize / influence / set a gradient fill for an object?
I want to have a gradient background take on different colors depending on an input value... If there is a way, then an explanation / example would be nice... if not, I'll just put a semi-transparent object infront of a black-to-white gradient and assign a solid color to it..

How do I disambiguate them in the code?
I tried doing com.adobe.utils.ArrayUtil inline, and leaving the existing import, but that resulted in an undefined property com error.

I've been working on a project for some time now in flash develop and it's come time to clean it up. While I was working on it I re sorted code into different classes without removing the imports in the existing classes. Now I know I probably have a ton of unused imports in classes I was wondering if their was an easy way to find these and remove them. At the moment the only way I can think is comment them out one by one until the app chucks a spaz?

I've got a problem how to organise files and packages in AS3/Flex project. A short intro to the problem:
The files structure in the project is (and should stay) like this:
libs/Class1/src/<files>
libs/Class2/src/<files>
libs/Class3/src/<files>
The amxmlc compiler source-path variable points to:
libs/
I need it because I have to subclass Class1 in Class3. That pushes me to put all the classes into packages that look as weird as this:
package ClassX.src { /* ... */ }
So in practice it looks like that:
package Class3.src
{
import Class1.src.Class1; // I prefer direct imports
public class Class3 extends Class1 { /* ... */ }
}
Is there a way to keep the files/folders structure and get rid of src in the package name. Changing the files structure or direct pointing compiler into base-class directory in not an option.

I'm working with a large Actionscript project, and every file needs to have it's imports organized. I noticed that you can achieve this easily in the Java version of eclipse, but that doesn't seem to work in Flash Builder. Is there a simple way to organise imports for the entire project?

I'm trying out the Flex Builder 3 Plugin for Eclipse, and it doesn't seem to have quick fix or automatic imports. I use those two features a lot with Java and FDT. I've been googling, but all I've found is some plugin that someone wrote for Flex Builder 2, and no other mentions. Is Flex Builder supposed to have these features?
