ActionScript 2.0 :: Strict Type For Object Properties?

i tried searching for an answer but no luck..i know i can enforce type checking by writing:

ActionScript Code:
var iCount:Number = 10;
but for existing objects, while adding properties to them, i cannot specify datatypes:

ActionScript 3.0 :: Possible To Strict Data Type Custom Object Properties?

Feb 8, 2010

I need to create a custom Object that basically stores some custom parameters (properties?), which I have successfully done, and the code below works fine.

PHP Code:
myObject = new Object();
myObject.nameLabel = "New Releases";
myObject.artOrientation = "portrait";
myObject.artAmount = 5;

I find the new compiler and debugger capabilities very useful, since I'm not the most detail-oriented, so I (usually) like that Flash forces me to strict-type my variables and such. Anyway, I was wondering if it's a "best practice" to strict data type a custom objects' properties, and if so, how to do it in the logic above? I kept getting syntax errors when I just tried it initially.

I know if I created a custom Class .AS file, I would be forced to data type the properties... but I'd rather just do it "in-line" in my main .FLA file. Also, I know I can just pass typed VARIABLES to the properties... but I'd rather have the properties strict-typed themselves... so if I try to pass a variable as the wrong type, then I would still get an error.

ActionScript :: Xml - Setting Object Properties From Other Object Properties?

Jun 25, 2010

i'm attempting to cast an object's property as an actual property of another object. here's my object variable: var propObj:Object = {prop:"width", width:50}; now i want to assign the property of a sprite using that object's properties. var sp:Sprite = new Sprite(); sp.(propObj.prop as Sprite.property) = propObj.width; now, i'm not even going to try that because i know the compiler will explode all up in my face. but you should be able to see what i'm trying to do. why i'm trying to do it is because i'm reading in an XML file with an undetermined list of usable properties for specific objects. so instead of writing something like a huge switch statement to evaluate whether the XML file has a value for that specific property, i'm trying to assign properties dynamically based on what's available in the XML file. if what i'm trying to do is possible, what's the best way to do it?

ActionScript 2.0 :: Trace The Properties Of An Object's Properties?

Jan 30, 2008

I forgot to put it in the title so I'll just place it here; I am using AS 2.0. I know that there are other ways to accomplish the goal that am after, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to access the properties of an object's properties?

Here is the code that I thought of, even though it doesn't work

var a:Object = new Object();
a.bproperty = 0; //lowerlevel properties
a.cproperty = 1; // lowerlevel properties

[Code].....

This really just boils down to how I am organizing the code(I have ideas on what do next, and i am 99% sure that I can get them to work), and if there is a way to dynamically access the properties of the objects properties, It will save me from creating yet another large block of code for my project. ActionScript 3.0 :: Type Error #1010 : A Term Is Undefined And Has No Properties?

Mar 23, 2011

I'm trying to create a website in flashcs5 for a class project.Inside the project i have a movie clip  which contains my menu buttons and I've placed that movie clip on the  main timeline in scene1.I've used action script to link the buttons  from the mc to the main timeline. All the buttons are working except the  button "recommended". I keep getting this error:

TypeError:  Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.    at  dreamcatcher_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()

Here is the code  in the actionscript:

Object(root).menu_mc.dreamcatchers_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLI   CK, fl_dreamcatchers);
function  fl_dreamcatchers(event:MouseEvent):void{     gotoAndPlay("dreamcatchers");}
Object(root).menu_mc.legend_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,  fl_legend);[code]....

I've double and triple checked all the instance names and there are no problems. The code for recommended is exactly the same as for all the other buttons so I don't understand what's going on.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Retrieving Object Properties From Object Array?

Nov 11, 2007

I'm basically loading an XML file to assign instances of a movie clip a distinct value, which it uses to modify its height. So, I'm looping through the xml and instantiating my class Object each time (Rect) and then placing that Object into an array:

Code:
function loadXML(loaded){
if(loaded){
var boxArray:Array;
xmlNode = this.firstChild;

[code]....

the trace here always comes up undefined. "listPosition" in this bit is an Rect parameter, defined in the previous bit of code as "i", so I can keep track of the order of the stack.I've found one or two examples of putting objects into an array and getting them back out, but it doesn't seem to work with this, maybe because I'm using a class. I don't know.Could this be an area where I need to use the array access brackets, like around the movie clip the object is loaded into. I've tried everything I can think of -- referencing back to the movieclip, adding extra objectRef type parameters... nothing has worked yet.

Actionscript 3 :: Graphic Object BitMapData Type The Same As BitmapData Type?

Dec 29, 2009

The title might be a little misleading. Look at my code and I will explain

public static function loadTile(tileDir:String = "empty"):void
{
if(tileDir != "empty")
{
tPoint = new Point(0,0);
tRect = new Rectangle(0,0,30,30);

[Code]...

I am trying to do tiling with sprites. I want my tiles to be interactive, so that is why I am using the sprite object instead of using regular bitMaps to represent my tiles. You might be wondering why I wouldnt just use graphics.beginBitmapFill(tImage); and graphics.drawRect(0, 0,tWidth ,tHeight ); to pick out the tiles I want to use. Well reason being is because it turns out that drawRect() first and second parameters actually alter the location of where the actual sprite sits at.

So if I set the x and y properties of the sprite to x = 20, and y = 20. then I set my drawRect(20,20). it actually adds an extra 20 pixels to my x and y coords of my sprite. And I know the reason why, I just need to know a better way.

ActionScript 2.0 :: Flash And Its Non-strict OOP Scope?

Sep 26, 2005

I was writing some stuff today and i realized that variables inside a class are not constrained to the constructor or method scope. In my opinion this is utter lazynes. Scopes need to be fully enforced to force programmers to comply with correct OOP styles and organization.

to force yourslef to comply with the standards, when reffering to the consturctor always use the 'this' prefix and use 'var' for all temporary variables that should be inside the method scope.

Actionscript 3 :: Why Does Have Two Modes Of Compilation (Strict & Standard)

Jan 7, 2010

I am learning ActionScript 3.0. Coming from Java world I can easily relate to strict compilation mode. I think having type safety checks at compilation time makes perfect sense. This makes me wonder, why the compiler allows a standard mode were all the type safety checks are deferred to run time? Is compatibility with older ActionScript specification the sole reason for having standard mode?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Creating Your Own Properties For An Object?

Sep 11, 2008

Back in the day (AS2), I used to create what I called an"ivar" property that collected the index of a series of buttonsthat were clickable (see attached code). Imagine 10 buttons on thestage with names (selectButton0, selectButton1, ...selectButton9).The code under the //----------BUTTONS header would make a propertyof the button that was clicked, call it "ivar" and then send it upto a function that would use it as an index to then load theappropriate content with MovieClipLoader (remember that Class?).I have tried something similar in AS3 without any luck sincethe whole button thing is now steered by events. Does anybody knowan elegant solution that would achieve a similar result. That is,click a button called "selectButton0" and have returned the zero asan index variable that could be used further?
