I'm trying to trace the width of the actual text of a dynamic textfield (called 'label'). i know this should be
code: trace(label.textWidth);
however, all I get is an 'undefined' message in the output box. Whereas, if I trace(label.length) instead, then it counts the number of digits in the text field. I thought label.textWidth would work? I want to find the length of the text in pixels basically...

I have a dynamic text box on my stage that is 400px wide. The text box is being populated with flashvars data from an HTML file and auto-sizes (myTextBox.autoSize = TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT) so it will display all content by expanding when the text spans over 400px. But when I trace 'myTextBox.width', it always returns '400'and when I trace 'myTextBox.textWidth' it always returns '0'no matter how much text I push into it through the flashvars.
This is because the trace is only tracing the previewed swf in Flash which has no ties whatsoever to the HTML file and flashvars.Therefore, when previwing the swf, my text box is always empty.The only way to see the content populating the text box is when actually launching the browser with the swf embedded in it.Because of this I cannot seem to be get flash to 'do things' based on the new width/textWidth values of my text box after it has been populated with the flashvars data from the HTML file.How can I get flash to detect the new width/textWidth of my text box after it has been populated by the flashvars data from the HTML file?

I am using a TextField in Flash CS2, because I need to know the width of the actual text for positioning purposes. However from some odd reason it doesn't always work when the browser is Google Chrome.

How can I get a consistent value from the top margin/padding of a TextField to the top of the actual text.According to the docs (link below), the text field has a 2px gutter on all sides. But there seems to be another gutter that seems to increase / decrease with the size of the text.Using times new roman for a default font size, I can get the baseline of some random text using what we know: I know that there is a 2px gutter all the way around the text field and we can get the ascent through textfield.getLineMetrics(0).ascent. If I draw a line at that position I'll get a line about 2 px below the actual text. Works fine.Now if I want to draw another line at the TOP of the text it's a guessing game. At 36pt text it's 8px from the top of the textfield. At 72pt text it's more like 12px from the top, and at 144pt text it's more like 20px from the top.URL...

I'm loading some text from an XML.If I use the trace() method, the output shows nordic letters (���), but when the text is shown on stage in a textfield, "�" is shown correctly, but "�" becomes regular "a".
The font supports nordic letters.
All of the nordic letters is correctly displayed in the rest of the page I'm developing.
embedFonts = true;
XML is saved with UTF-8
... a shot in the dark is better than nothing at this point.

I've got 2 dynamic textFields that is feed xml data(String) from external xml file.What I want to achieve is that the text fields width should increase or decrease dynamically according the String that's passed into it.Eg:- if the String contains value "Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello".The size of the textfield should increase to fit the entire String value inside it.I've tried using TextFieldAutoSize.CENTER or TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT, but I'm not getting what I want.

When creating a new TextField dynamically, is there a property that automatically adjusts the width to the content or is it always necessary to have txt_field.width = ...?
My text field:

I am a newbie in Flash CS3. How to resize the width of of a movie clip according to the size the size of dynamic text inside it. I did it by creating a text field 'myText' and then converted it to a MovieClip symbol and named the MovieClip as myClip. The text in myText is assigned at run-time and its width changes according to the text.
I did it as follows:-
myClip.myText.selectable = false;
myClip.mouseChildren = false;
myClip.useHandCursor = true;
myClip.buttonMode = true;
myClip.myText.width = myClip.myText.textWidth + 5;
On doing this I find the clickable area changes according to the size of the text field but the text field doesn't appear at all.

I used to know how to do this, so, I KNOW it's possible, but I can't figure it out again. I'm altering the width of my TextField by setting the width property but that warps the text. I want to alter the width of the text field without altering the way the font looks (obviously). I believe it has something to do with autoText or some such idiocy (why would I ever want to warp my text?!) but I just can't recall.

If the original width was 50 this simply stretches the field to 100, rather than adding 50 pixels into which characters can be drawn.

I have an application with width/height of 100%. I have several nested groups within and their measurements are all not set, instead being defined as top=5 or left/right=10, etcI'm trying to get the actual with of a group that should be 390. I've set the swf object size to be 400 from the html embed code, and the group is inside another group that is width=100%. The group has a left=5 and right=5 so the width should be 400-10. When I display the .width and .measuredWidth of this group, the width is always 400.I'm fairly new to flex/flash. Do I need to have explicitly set widths in order to get the width of child containers? Is there something I'm doing wrong here?

I have a dynamic text box on my main time line with an instance name (NOT var name) of MCtxt. My textfiles have the variable of txtMC. I have a movie clip with a little ease bar on it. When the user mouses over the movie clip the ease bar goes to the mouse and, once it comes close to stopping, it triggers some AS to capture a number. Then I have a switch statement that does some stuff depending on the number.
So here is the code I have on that movie clip:

Tracing j returns the correct number and the _root.date.text works just fine. But the text is not loading and the trace on the success returns an undefined. I have tried moving all of the loading text code inside the case but it doesn't work there either. All variable names are correct (quadruple checked, at least) so it's gotta be something with my code.

Is there a way I can stop a single word splitting over two lines when putting dynamic text into a fixed width, multiline text field?I have a simple method of checking if there are more lines than words and then running a while loop to reduce the font size until there are the same amount or less lines than words. But this doesnt always work, if say the final word of three is quite short and the second word splits over two lines then I still have 3 words and 3 lines.

I have 2 input textfields on the stage and 1 dynamic textfield.
-input1 is for quantity
-input2 is for page count
When a user enters a number into the page count it makes a calculation and places the outcome into the dynamic textfield. This textfield is for the individual price.All of this so far works. What I want to do now is create another dynamic textfield for the total. So the individual price is multiplied by the quantity and this result is put in the new dynamic text field. I have the code for that working but here is where it gets tricky (for me anyway).The total price is to start off invisible. When I roll over the individual price the total price is to appear (For a test lets just say when I roll over an area the total price appears).To stop cursor flickering this should be done inside a movieclip. So... I have create a movieclip and placed a dynamic textfield inside it. They all have instance names BUT how do I reference it in script?I need to tell the resulting calculation to be placed inside the textfield which is inside the movieclip. If it isn't inside a movie clip I can do it. But how to I reference it when inside one?

At the moment all I can see is 'I' - I want the textbox to stretch based on how much text is in it, and not to go to a new line - So the one line just keeps gettin bigger.

I'm updating an old Flash file and I'm pulling some dynamic text into a text box, but I'm having a really, really hard time trying to get it to resize the width so it always fills the box, which is 170 wide.

none of it seems to work.

The content of the txt file will be modified daily by the client.What i need is that if there is too much text in the txt file, the dynamic textfield resizes (and not only with autosize because the text can be really long).[code]it doesnt look very good but it works. When I turn on the "autoSize TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT" some text fields are overlapped, and, aligned when I turn off, but, they all get the same size (100px by default - dont know why), which makes the distance between them unequal.

change the width of the dynamic text field that each text nav item from the xml loads into so that the width changes depending on what is in the xml.
So the width of the button would change depending on the ammount of characters entered.
