ActionScript 2.0 :: Type A Word In A Textfield And Have It Search For A Match Through A List Of Words In Xml
Jun 1, 2007
I'm trying to figure out how to get this started. I'd like to type a word in a textfield and have it search for a match through a list of words in xml. There would be 26 xml files containing a list of words starting with a letter of the alphabet.
For a word matching game, when a player moves a piece I need to check the entire dictionary to see if the the word that the player made exists in the dictionary. I need to do this as quickly as possible. simply iterating through the dictionary is way too slow.
What is the quickest algorithm in AS3 to search a long list like this for a match, and what datatype should I use? (ie array, object, Dictionary etc)
String.prototype.replace = function(find,replace){ return this.split(find).join(replace).toString(); } // Example: foo = "Let's replace all the e's in this sentence with an o."; trace(foo.replace("e","o"))
How would I replace the first "e" with "a", the second "e" with "b", etc...
I'm planning to make a game that gives players the choice to search a word when selecting a character, and if that word is found, they get to play as them. I don't even have a clue what, where and how I am gonna put the list in the game for something to search it. I'll try to give an example:
A user puts "horse" into the input field, presses the "Search" button, and Flash searches the word "horse" in a list of maybe 30 or so words. If it returns no results, a message says, "keyword not found". If it is found, a picture of a horse comes up in the character preview box.
My designer provides me lots of MovieClips containing buttons and its states and most of them contain a TLF TextField. Now I do not want to check each MovieClip where a TLF TextField is used. Can I know exactly in which MovieClips and buttons a TLF TextFields has been used so that I can convert them to a classic TextField, or any method to convert all TLF TextFields to classic automatically by the compiler itself? I tried deleting the TLF library from publish settings: it starts giving me an error, but still not pointing me to where TLF TextFields are being used.
so i search for keywords ofc, but...doing this isn't really my thing:input.text.indexOf("spam") != -1 && input.text.indexOf("more") ! -1 && ... etc I'd like to make it some what like:input.text.indexOf(<database>) != -1
Ok so If I load a list of like 2000 words from a text file into a text box like this
ActionScript Code: var url:String = "dictionaries/"aa.txt"; var loadit:URLLoader = new URLLoader(); loadit.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, completeHandler);
[Code]....
how could I randomly choose a word from the list and have it as a variable
I'm pulling news information from an XML file. The root node is "article", the child nodes are (for example) "date", "title", "caption", "copy", "link", etc.
Each time an article is added, a couple button (mc's) will be added to the stage. One button when clicked displays a movie clip and attempts to update the dynamic textfields within to display just the date and caption. The other button when clicked displays a different movie clip and attempts to update the dynamic textfields within to display all of the information noted above.
Being that this is dynamic and coming from an XML file, I want to avoid having to write if ... else statements for every new article (and each button).
Is it possible to search an XML document and scan for a name/ID match to create certain actions?
In other words, If I were to give an MC a name of "thisButton123" and also give an XML article node an ID attribute of "thisButton123", I could say something like if the currentTarget.name == any of these XML node attributes than pull that nodes content. Eliminating the need to compare/contrast names and ID's specifically.
i'm new to flash AS3. I am trying to create an drag drop activity where the user can match words and meanings by dropping and dragging into the right space. At the moment I want to create multiple drop areas for the boxes. At the moment they will only fall within their own target area - also only the boxes move and not the text. How do i create mutiple drop areas for the words and meanings?
I'm looking for the best way to search an 8 char string in AS3 to see if it contains a word or words. I've already got a dictionary of words loaded into Flash, with.[code]...
I am kind of new to javascript/html5. normally I would do that kind of stuff inside flash/as3. but since the iPad doesn't support that I need to switch the horse...I want to build a website where words are floating in position and size and if the mouse comes over one word it should draw some lines to all the other words. are there any frameworks one could use? the whole should look like a tag cloud with lines between the tags.
I am looking to develop an application to read in a list of 10000+ wordlist and create a function which efficiently and quickly checks if the word exists on the list.function shd be optimized to be called several times..
i have a input text field on stage called textfield and a button called btn i want to be able to search for key words from the users input i found this code but it doesnt work,
1.Read in a text file. e.g containing text like this, teacher/student/1/sn/2/3/4/5/9/f/tn/02/
2.pass it to a string.
3.then beable to extract different parts of the string and place them in different arrays.
The bit I dont know how to do is the extracting specific parts of the string? Is it possible to search for / and to treat what comes after it as a specific peice of information until the next / is read? Or perhaps there is a more efficient approach?
i'm trying to write a function but with no luck. seems my brain capacity's limited the function will take two parameters: a term to search for, and a string to be searched. what i want the function to return is a new string containing the term (the parameter) along with a couple of words before and after it (as found in the search string).
[URL]I client want some thing like this. User will search a word and application searches that word in a opened page and highlight it. This is a Flash application and uses php at back-end to generate XML.
In Actionscript and Adobe Flex, I'm using a pattern and regexp (with the global flag) with the string.match method and it works how I'd like except when the match returns multiple occurrences of the same word in the text. In that case, all the matches for that word point only to the index for the first occurrence of that word. For example, if the text is "cat dog cat cat cow" and the pattern is a search for cat*, the match method returns an array of three occurrences of "cat", however, they all point to only the index of the first occurrence of cat when i use indexOf on a loop through the array. I'm assuming this is just how the string.match method is. I want to find the specific indices of every occurrence of a match, even if it is of a word that was already previously matched.

Assuming the nextSound() function looks the same as playSound, typewise... The button click works fine, but the event listener won't call the function because its sending an argument the function isn't expecting. I can change the nextTrack function to be evt:Event, but then the button is sending not enough arguments, and I can't find anything to type it to that will work. I can make a typed function to call the un-typed nextTrack function from the event listener
public function callnextsong(evt:Event):void{ nextTrack(); }
I'm doing a external image slider, and i have to put some words appearing with each image. Those words must be editable, so i can't just simply draw them on photoshop. Besides that, must be updated sometimes. Finnaly, there is an motion tween applied to the words. Now, the problem is this: The list of words to put in this fla is extense (something like 20 words). So, to update this, i don't want to open flash and edit one by ony, having to edit in place all the words in all the motion layers, it would be very anoying. So i'd like to use something like a notepad file to update these words, or something looked like...
I have a text file that has a large list of words. Each word is on its own line but has no commas or any punctations in between.Can I turn this file into an array with each word being a string in the array?Can I do this without manually putting commas in between each word?
seen a tut on a boggle type game - making words from a selection of letters. You type in a word and then it is checked against the array word list.etc...
I have a document class which is linked to an external class that defines the properties of a specific textfield. When the user submits the text in the textfield (whatever they typed into it) I would like the text to be broken up into the individual words and have those words placed into separate movie clips (the same instance of a movie clip, just each word placed into a different one). How can I do this? Here is the code I am using.
Code: function replaceText(event:MouseEvent):void { //beginning of the function for the submit button
