View 7 RepliesI have a simple question regarding the objects that are on stage. If you make a symbol in the Flash editor, export it for actionscript and put it on the stage, how can you refer to it in an external .as file which contains the document class? I tried using getChildAt() but that returns a displayobject, and I want to modify properties of that instance of the class of that symbol.
I need this because I am trying to make a scrollpane that adapts it's size to the screen resolution, and it's source is a MovieClip that isn't on stage but in the library. I also want the source to adapt it's width and height to the screen resolution. Is this possible? For this to work I need to refer to that source MovieClip in my as3 file, and I can't figure out how to do that...(in this situation it isn't even on stage but I guess I could make it invisible and put it on the stage if nessecary)
I've been heavily mired in 3D recently, and decided to pay a visit back to good ole Flash.
My problem is this. I'm extending the MovieClipLoader class to create a Preloader Class (yes I'm sure it's been done fifty billion times but). I'm trying to refer to a symbol in a common library, the preloader symbol itself.
Inside my class I have this

baseClip is a MovieClip object which takes a MovieClip passed to the constructor of the class in the FLA. (say a container movieclip which has a target clip preloaded into it) The class does load the target clip into the baseClip, but doesn't show the preloader, which makes me think I'm not referring to it properly.
I've got what I think isn't a real tough one however I can't seem to get this working.
I have a MovieClip. This movie clip has 21 buttons. These 21 buttons should be forwarding the user to frames 60-81 on the maintime line.
The actionscript I've added is not providing any errors however it's working either as these buttons don't do anything unfortuanlty.
Below is a sample of the code i've placed within the MovieClip itself, as the buttons and the button names are contained in the movieClip.

This code is listed for each button instance and to forward the user to a frame on the main timeline (NOT the timeline in the MovieClip itself).
Again, this code is contained in the MovieClip itself and not on the main timeline, as the buttons exist in the movieClip I.E. button1_btn to button21_btn
Lastly, to provide a visual idea of what i'm expereincing, please refer to screenshot embeeded in this message or the attachment (same thing).
I'm creating mc's during runtime like this:

So, if pictures is 5, then we end up with 5 boxes, box1_mc, box2_mc, box3_mc and so on. But I can't work out an easy way to refer to them later on. For example, say someone presses a button and I want to move all of them - how can I set their _x value in a loop? For example, if I wanted to move all of them 100 pixels, then this wouldn't work:

Using AS3, I was wondering how to control one object, a ball, while another ball bounces around. I'm modifying code from "Foundation ActionScript 3.0 Animation" by Keith Peters.
I'm pretty new so I'm probably making some obvious mistakes here. First of all I thought I could refer to the balls as ball[0] and ball[1] since they are in an array called ball. Is this correct?

I've been looking for a tutorial to create a timeline scrubber (not animating specific movie clips, but actually a scrubber that can move along different keyframes of a timeline that has a series of images on it).I found a bunch of these (scrubber controlling specific movie clips): http:[url]....but nothing that allows you to just scrub back and forth on the whole timeline in the exported swf.

The basic problem I am having is this: I have a Customer class in Java that has an ArrayList of Address classes. I have a Customer class in Flex that has an ArrayCollection of Address classes. When I make the remote object call for a Customer I get back a Customer object in Flex, but the ArrayCollecion objects have a data type of Object instead of Address. If I try to call for a List of Address classes I get the same result. If I try to call for a List of Customer classes I get a list of Customer classes in Flex. Using tomcat 6 with the following jars:

I am using AS3 and the UILoader Component to bring in external .swf files into my main (index) page, works fine.
Here is the problem: From inside an external swf, I have a button that I want to communicate "back" to an object on the main page.
Here is the code I am using to change the alpha of the testbox_mc located on the main page:

I'm now finding the great need for classes as my current project is getting quite gummed up with too much scripting in the main document. Becoming a real pain to find stuff with in my code.
So I started writing a class to takes an id passed to it from the main time line, accesses my mySql DB, pulls the related info and the processes it. What I can't seem to figure out, is how to pass a variable back to the main time line. The traces all work, so I know my class works. I've searched here and via google, but I must not be searching the right stuff because I get a lot of results with are usually very complicated questions that don't yield the answers I need.

I'm having trouble with skipping back to frame 1 after having skipped forward to frame 2 using buttons. The button which is suppose to skip back won't work and the errormessage I get after previewing is:
Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. at page3/frame1()

I recently started creating a flash website from a template that was created back in 2004. I have very little knowledge of either AS 2.0 or AS 3.0. I am currently attempting to link my buttons that are in separate movieclips back to specific parts of the main timeline "scene 1". Currently when clicked, the buttons just cycle through the varying pages that have been created, "s1" , "s2" etc.
How do I link a movieclip/button back to "s8" in the main timeline?The AS 2.0(I think it's AS 2.0 anyway) that currently exists is as follows:

I understand what first rollOver and rollOut commands are and they work fine, but the "On (release)" doesn't seem to go where it needs to.

View 6 RepliesI'm designing a page that is kind of like a photo album. You click on the next button to view the next image. The current image moves off to the left and the new one moves in from the right. Thats simple as its just sequential. But if i wanted to go back to the previous image in the same way with that one moving back to the right and the previous one moving back in from the left you obviously can't make the timeline go backwards can you?

Placed the movie clip object on stage with two dynamic text fields in it. Make sure the container is placed on stage, has the two text fields in it, and everything is given a proper instance name. Also include the caurina folder.

How can you call objects based on properties they have instead of object names? For example if i want all the objects in an area to move somewhere else. Thats not what im trying to do but just an example. Also im using flash mx 2004
View 1 RepliesI have a project I'm working on where the user is presented with an overhead shot of a building and is able to mouse-over the different rooms to choose one to "enter." Once clicked, the chosen room is an external .SWF that is loaded that has options to view other external .SWFs within that room. Problem is, within the first loaded .SWF, I have a "home" button that is supposed to take the viewer back to the main overhead view but I can't get the AS to work. I've tried _parent and _root with no luck (not sure I even typed out right code).

View 2 RepliesI succeeded in sending typed objects from a PHP application to a flex front-end using Zend_AMF as per this question. The problem I am facing now is that I would like to send a typed object from flex to PHP and on the PHP side, be able to receive it as a typed object instead of stdClass.

After some testing, I removed the namespace from the PHP object and moved it into the global namespace. This seems to have resolved the issue. I have tried setting RemoteClass to modules estingCTest and also modules.testing.CTest. $_eplicitType was then set to the same value for both tests. The result is that when I use modules.testing.CTest, this is the classname that Zend_AMF sees. If I use namespace notation, Zend_AMF sees modulestestingCTest, as all the slashes get stripped out. But how can I get this working with php namespaces?
I have a project which requires the loading and unloading of multiple "scenes". All my navigation is working (probably not the most efficient way) but I'm having one issue. I need a button on one of the loaded SWFs to call a function on the main timeline. Since Actionscript 3 no longer supports the _root functionality the way AS2 did, I cannot access the main timeline.
In general, how do I get to the root of the main timeline without using _root?
Also, how can I reference the loaded SWF and objects inside of it from the main timeline?
I've tried looking everywhere for this answer, but I'm still at a loss. I'm beginning to think it's not possible or I'm just not looking in the right places.I have three swf files. The main container and then two external swf files being loaded into the main swf. Swf 1 (frame.swf) has a function on the main timeline that needs to be called from a button in swf 2 (toolbox.swf). My initial thought was to place the actionscript of frame.swf into a movieclip and call it from toolbox.swf using:_root.callFunction("PH", "doPhone");Although this would work, I cannot use this option. The actionscript of swf 1 must stay in the main timeline. Using a class file is not an option either. Is there any other way to call a function from the main timeline of an external swf?

so i'm working mostly in a main class file. up until now subclasses (or the class for objects that i'm using in my game) have really only contained methods that controlled property values, and properties. however, i'm now interested in making an enemy in my game, but doing almost all the code for the enemy in the class file. i need to figure out how to communicate and check the object instance of the class against an object instance being controlled by the main class.
