ActionScript 3.0 :: Convert Text To MovieClip Instance Name?
Feb 26, 2011var txtI:TextField=new TextField();
txtI.text="Germany";
txtI.gotoAndPlay(2); // so this should mean Germany.gotoAndPlay(2)
var txtI:TextField=new TextField();
txtI.text="Germany";
txtI.gotoAndPlay(2); // so this should mean Germany.gotoAndPlay(2)
so here's my problem. I've got an array (wall_inst[]) containing instance names of 3 objects (for now), however they are stored as text strings. I've got a moving 'ball' object too. The problem is, the values contained in the array are text strings and will not behave as instance names, when I try to get object properties off them etc. Eg, I can do this:

I have multiple buttons, I would like, when the user presses a button, the name of that button is displayed as text on another frame.[code]
View 14 RepliesI have made a text field of type input.and a button(when i click on button it traces the value which i write in the textfield)all works fine.
Now the problem is that i want to show that text string in write into the textfield to the stage on clicking on the button.
I have a movieclip with dynamic text fields and images, when I add 3D animation to my movieclip it makes my dynamic text and dynamic images slightly blurry. Is there a way to fix this? I'm not using papervision or any 3rd party library I'm using the Flash API.
View 2 Replieshow to convert text into a bitmap or a mocieclip with transparent background. i could convert the text into bitmap but it has got a white background..
View 1 RepliesI'm using a library that has a function that returns an instance of some class Engine.
I'd like to tack on some interfaces to Engine, so I subclass it class InterfacedEngine extends Engine implements AwesomeInterface. but when I change the code that uses the classes from this:
var engine:Engine = generateEngine();
to this: var interfacedEngine:InterfacedEngine = generateEngine();
It gives me a runtime error (elision mine):
TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert ...::Engine@1bc2bf11 to ....InterfacedEngine.
What about AS3 classes am I misunderstanding?
I have 40 movieclips, with the instance names p[1-40] (for example, p14 or p32). I want them all to do something in order, so I'm using a 'for' loop. In simplified psuedo-code, it looks like:
for 40 {
variable = variable + 1
p[variable]
[code].....
I'm slowly climbing the AS3 learning curve, I had a query about converting data stored in an Array:
My flash file contains six movieClips arranged into a grid, each movieClip is named with an instance name, increasing sequentially like so:grid1, grid2, grid3 ... etc
What I'm trying to achieve is to have one of the grid items randomly selected to play a contained animation every 2 seconds.[code]...
i have several button that should navigate to frames in my movie. the button have the same name as the frame's labels i need to convert the buttons' instance names to strings
stop();
import flash.events.MouseEvent;
this.Label1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN ,gotoLabel);
function gotoLabel(event:MouseEvent):void{
gotoAndStop('label1AsString');
}
I have a Flash poetry project in which I have 49 separate dynamic text boxes on stage. Each has a separate instance name - "cell_1", "cell_2", "cell_3" etc. I use the following code to store instance names in an array -
var j:int;
for (j = 1; j < 50; j++) {
instances.push("cell_"+j)
[code].....
Is there a simple way to convert an instance variable to a String?
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to turn an string into an instance name.
stage.focus = ["box_"+[i+1]];
this gives me back = box_2;
but I need it to be an object not a string.
In as2 I could use eval. How do I do it in as3?
how can I convert String to Array(Instance Name)?The code below works fine.
Code:
var gridArray:Array = new Array(sq1_btn,sq2_btn);
gridArray[0].visible=false;
[code].....
Does anyone know if it is possinle to scroll a graphic or a movie instance as well as a text instance in flash. I want to scroll text and images as well. Actually text with imges embedded in it.

I have a movieclip instance named 'placeholder' on the canvas, and I want to change the alpha of the named movieclip from it's class without effecting the alpha of all the movieclips of the same type. How would I specifically target the named movieclip instance that is on the canvas?
View 3 RepliesFor some reason, the same code works now, without any problem at all. I don't know what happened, or why, but I no longer have this problem Here's the original post: To put simply, I created a MovieClip, put it with addChild() to stage, and when I tried to call this piece of code:

how can i access a movieclip via its instance name in another Movieclip class?
and a nother question how can i access a movieclip via its class name in another movieclip class?
BTW i want to access the movieclip child
I am trying to make a reference to a movieclip instance that is in another movieclip.
Here's the deal: I have a main timeline for different pages of a website...then within that I make all of the art on each page into a movieclip so I can do animations every time that main timeline frame is called to, yet still keep my main timeline clean.
Within one page's movieclip I have a few buttons that I want to use to go to other pages by referencing them on the main timeline.I have been using this: (home_about is the about us button on my home page, and frame 31 is on the main timeline).
home_about.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fl_ClickToGoToAndPlayFromFrame_6);
function fl_ClickToGoToAndPlayFromFrame_6(event:MouseEvent) :void
{[code].............
Since this home_about is within another movieclip,I get the access of undefined property error. Do I need to change the code I've pasted above or add in variable definitions to fix this?
I have a static text in a swf file... Now i want to access that static text and convert in to a dynamic text during the run time... How to access the static text availbale in the swf file.... And then after accessing how to convert the static text to a dynamic text in flash AS 2.0.. Is it possible to do this one.. If yes means then give me a idea to do this one...
View 5 RepliesI have a flex (flash builder 4) application with a rich text editor control. I am storing this rich text output in a database via zend amf <--> php.
Now I want to display the first part of that text in a data grid. To do so it seems it might be easiest to get the plain text version.
I am hoping I can somehow convert it to plain text in PHP before I pass it back to flex?
Is there a way to break text through actionscript so that it becomes a shape? I know that I can hit CTRL+B two times to break apart text and convert it to a shape, but I need to do it through actionscript, so that a user can enter some text, and then I have some effects applied to it.
View 1 RepliesIs it possible using actionscript to convert a text box into Input text once it has already been set as either dynamic/static text in the 'text box properties' dialog?[code]...
View 3 Repliesdo i have to use some other server-side code to save a text file to the flash folder?just want to convert some meaningless text from an input dynamic text to a file...
View 3 RepliesI am trying to create an interactive graphic. Basically, it's three squares layered on top of each other, with a large square in back, a medium square centered in the middle of the large square, and a small square in front centered in the middle of the medium square.
When you roll over the medium square, say, it expands to almost the size of the large square and some text fades in, and the small square on top of it fades away. When you roll off of the medium square, it goes back to it's smaller size, and the small square fades back in.
Currently, I have the actionscript in the movieclip to make the medium square get larger and smaller (and the text fade in), but I need to somehow reference the instance of the small square movieclip to hide it when I roll over the medium movieclip.
My actionscript for the medium square activity, currently:
Code:
stop();
this.onEnterFrame = function(){
if(rewind == true){
[Code]....
how to have this rolling over action get rid of the small square and then bring it back on roll out.
Alright so lets say I have a number of movieclips or text fields or something with instance names test1, test2, test3 and so forth. Now say I want to fill these text fields with text that I have in an array and I want to do this with a loop, how do I do this? What I'm really asking is if there is a way to use a variable in an instance name if you catch my drift.
[Code]...
There's a movieclip, lets call it myMovieClip. Inside this movieclip there is a dynamic text box, lets call this one myText. Now to change the text within this text box that is embedded in a movieclip, it's simply:
[Code]....
However, what if there is a variable, called myVariable that stores the instance name of the text box. With only one text box I know it's pointless, but for the sake of example, lets leave it simple. So, suddenly the code looks like:
[Code]....
Does creating a new instance of an Object that uses an identical name to an older instance, delete the previous instance? Or should the original instance be deleted first? The code uses a ridiculous amount of XML vars. Isn't it less memory intensive to parse the XML and save the properties to an Object, and then delete the XML Object, rather than keep the XML Object around and reference it's child nodes directly? Is it better form to break up a huge XML file (>600lines/3200vars) into smaller chunks?
View 1 RepliesI'm in the process of making a game, I come from a coding background, however I'm having difficulties with making a .png into a MovieClip.
