ActionScript 3.0 :: Find Out Which Display Object Is Hitting The Other

I have a horizontal slider which slides images. When one of the images is in the middle of the stage I want to be able to show text related to that image. At the minute it shows all the text but thats not right.
What Ive got is a way to find out if one image is hitting the middle point.

If I create a rectangle with 100px width and 100px height and then rotate it, the size of the element's "box" will have increased.With 45 rotation, the size becomes about 143x143 (from 100x100).Doing sometimes like cos(angleRad) * currentWidth seems to work for 45 rotation, but for other bigger angles it doesn't.At the moment I am doing this:

can I resize a display object (container) without its contents (children) are resized?
For example, in the following code when I resize the green square, red is also resized. I wanted to resize only the green.

Can you make one Bitmap Object (I'm using an external jpg) or something similar, and then display it many times simultaneously without creating a separate object each time?
Also, would they be easily removed or hidden?
I've got a little checkmark jpg graphic loaded here, but I'm not sure how to go about using it in many places at once.. I can only display it in the one place at any one time...
I'm thinking there might be a way to load the picture once, then use its bitmapData elsewhere in new display objects somehow, without needing to reload the image over and over?

It's my understanding that a display object cannot be in the display list more that once.So if I add something to the stage shouldn't a second addition of the same object replace the first? for instance:

there should now only be one "myDisplayObject" on the stage.

Using the mac version of flash CS3, and trying to import classes, namely the Loader class. Everywhere I've seen this code is used:
import flash.display.Loader;
or for all classes in display:
import flash.display.*;
Neither of which seems to work, and after searching out the file path for flash.display there is only one file in the display folder (BitmapData.as).So my question is, where do I find the loader class? And secondly, once I find it, do I copy and paste it into the display
folder or do I use a different file path?

How can i cast a object to another type? in AS3 i tried putting (objectType) infront of the variable but it doesnt work, below i have added objects of fishes into the child, and i am getting the fishes back out when mouse down is triggered, and then calling the fishes what to do. however i cant call the method of the custom class fish because it is a displayobject.[code]...

I have built a site in AS2 and would like to know the position of a ball so that I can move a sign to it always.The whole website is in AS2, but I think I have written an incomplete code below for AS3. imagine i have a scene with hundreds of interactive objects, but they're all invisible, and i don't really know where they are. bad scenario, but work with me here.a while ago i saw a block of code that would trace() the name of every single DisplayObject within the entire scene when you rolled over it.. it was only like 3 lines of code - and it would affect all objects, even objects inside of other movieclips, etc.

I have a couple of components on stage that I need to disable mouse events on. I've been looking through the documentation, and it looks like the components probably have a Mouse listener setup, and then they fire off their functions when their listeners are notified of an event. In order to remove a Mouse listener, I need to know the instance name of the listener object, is there a way of referencing this? I couldn't find it as a built-in function.
Maybe I'm off-base, and there's a better way to get a component to stop responding to mouse events. I tried

I have a Flex XML object as follows:

This object is ok, and shows up correctly in debug mode. The problem is I have a country name i.e. private var _country:String = "Angola";, and I want to get the corresponding value 'AO' from the XML object. Do you know how to do this?
I have tried loads of Livedocs examples, but cant get it to work. P.S. I am working on a HtpService & WebService driven app to display global weather conditions overlayed on a Google Maps interface. Going to make it available to the Flex community when finished.
