I'm having a little trouble with my move to as3, (surprise surprise huh?) Basically when I create a movieclip, I wan't to pass some values into it, like so:

What is the correct syntax to initiate a function in a class similar to constructing an associative array? I have a function that's custom variables is ballooning out and I'd like to label them in the call for sanity sake.

currently:
myClass.myClassFunction("hello world",999,0xff0000);
desired:
myClass.myClassFunction(myText:"hello world",myNumber:999,myColor:0xff0000);

and the class itself for reference:

I am creating a Weapon class for a game and the weapons itself will be the sub classes. The sub classes will hard code some values (such as max ammo and the weapon name).

I trying to access this declared data in the base class constructor, at the moment it's not outputting the values. Is this possible?

I've broken my Weapon class for simplicity:

My current workaround is creating a protected method in the base class to trace the information and calling that method in the sub class's constructor, this works fine but this doesn't seem like the most efficient technique?

I have a bunch of movieclips( clip A and B for this example) in my library that I want to use the same base class (MyClass.as in my example). I assigned the same base class in each clips property window and then gave each clip a unique class name which doesn't exist so flash says it will create the class automatically.

Now if I create a bunch of A's and B's on the stage via actionscript, how would I send variables to the constructor in MyClass.as without having to creating A.as and B.as to pass the variables along to the base class? if I do: Var newA:MovieClip = new A (argument 1, argument2, etc) It says it expects 0 args since the A & B classes were created automatically by flash.

I have a base class "Vehicle" and a derived class "Car".

Basically, I want to set a vehicle property in Car's constructor, call Vehicle's constructor with super() and have Vehicle do something based on myVar. But this is the output i get: car pre: null car post: car vehicle: vehicle Why does myVar not keep the value of "car" when the base class constructor is called? How am I supposed to implement this correctly?

I have researched flash vars and the like and didnt really get far.[code]I was able to get the URL into Flash!So flash now has a variable called "section" that holds a string like this.url...My question is; how do i get the values held in each of these days, weeks, years, etc into a format that can be used with in the flash movie. Ideally into seperate variables where the values can be returned in a textbox.

I am trying to use the tutorial on this site to create a simple form submission to my database via ASP. I couldn't open the sample - I am on MX. But I followed the steps on the webpage.My variables are not being passed. All of the Response.Write statements in my ASP page are coming up blank.So I have the 3 input text fields. I specified each with the same variable name as used in the tutorial (fname, lname, email, message). I also used those same names as the instance names but that didn't help so I've deleted it. So currently there are no instance names, just variable names.And then there is a submit button with the code from the tutorial:

Thats all that is in the movie.The ASP page comes up, and the database submission completes, but all the variables and database fields are blank.

In the Flash IDE I've placed an instance of MyMC, which is called mcOnStage, on the stage. Through the document's class Main I'd want to perform the constructor function of mcOnStage.

Basically, I have an XML object which is pulling layout variables, and then those variables are being passed to another XML object which is sourcing some video thumbnails.And its actually working fine, but only after some tinkering. It seems that the passed variables have to be redifined in some fashion within the scope of the new function.It might be easier to explain with the code:

I'm using swfObject to load my flash. I need to call a function or pass new variables into the flash file without it reloading. The user clicks on a button and the flash text needs to change. I have it working but it reloads the flash file and looks very choppy.

I have been using the flashvars from swfobject for a long time to pass info into my swf for specific outcomes. I am just starting to publish everything using flash player 10 and wasnt able to get my variable to be seen by the swf. maybe i was doing something incorrectly with this new file? but i then took code from my older files and they didnt work either... then i published down to flashplayer 9 and it worked perfectly... ???

I'm having a bit of a problem with external vars and timing.I'm building a custom FLV player. In the parent HTML I have some boolean variables that I'm passing to the SWf, stuff like autoStart and loopPlayback.[code]The problem is that line gets executed before the external var gets in, I think. If I place a dummy var at the top of the AS then everything works fine. And the external var is definitely getting passed in, I have setup a check for that.I would need something like loadVars.onData ...but I'm not using loadVars, I wnat the vars to come in from the SWFObject HTML, or maybe a query string.

What I wanted to do originally was to create a logging class to interact with Flash/JavaScript, and be cross-browser compatible. I wanted to be able to use the log function as an alias of a method in the log class. This got me to wondering whether I could implement a custom casting function just because. I've now realized it's not possible, but was fun to play with anyway.

here is the scenario we ran across while working on our Flash AS3 project today.

/main/root.fla
/main/root.as
/main/sub1/sub.fla

We have many sub swf's that are loaded by the main root swf. The root swf shows the art on the stage of the sub swf, and also runs some code from the sub swf's document class. However, we noticed the constructor was not getting called on the second sub swf if the document class is the same name- even if they are in different folders. Note that we publish our swf files to a separate directory (with the same structure as above) so it is easily copied to the web server.

-root.swf loads sub1/sub.swf
-the constructor of the document class sub.as in subfolder sub1 gets called
-root.swf shows sub1/sub.swf assets with the correctly constructed sub1/sub.as document class
-user chooses to switch to sub2

We decided to use a workaround where we basically changed the two document class .as files to be different names (e.g. renamed sub1/sub.as -> sub1/sub1.as and sub2/sub.as -> sub2/sub2.as, and updated the .fla's to point to the renamed document classes), and it works as expected. Hopefully that workaround is useful for someone.I realize most people just name every single file differently and keep everything in one folder, but when you have a sufficiently complicated project, things like this come up.

I have many instances of letterKey(asdfghj.... a full keyboard), so I'd like to use the IDE to arrange and pass variables. SO, within the Flash IDE/Library, I rightclick the symbol to access its component definition, and add a parameter for the var in the baseclass name:value,variable:var,default:whatever,type:Str ing).Now, in the constructor function for the baseclass, if I trace my variable: it is null.

I'm trying to create an application that receives variables passed through FlashVars and makes use of the new TLFTextField. I have run into an issue with accessing the FlashVars after declaring a TLFTextField variable.

The code I have is as follows:

var tf:TextField = new TextField();

The HTML file is passing a FlashVars value of "title=ThisIsTheTitle" If I run the code, the tf TextField is empty. If I comment out the last line that creates the TLFTextField, the FlashVars come through fine and the tf TextField displays the "title" variable that was passed through FlashVars.If I change the last line to read:

It works fine (the "title" variable from FlashVars is show in the tf TextField). I don't understand why delcaring a TLFTextField prevents the FlashVars from being accessed.

When I have a class linked to a MovieClip in my library and that class takes an argument in its constructor method. That class will compile properly ONLY when it's located in my top-level directory (same dir as the .fla and Document.as files). If I move that class to a deeper directory, say com.place, the compiler will generate error "1136: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected 0.

There is a library component represented by Class A. But constructor of this class requires some parameters. When the component needs to be added dynamically, it's fine because of code :

But what if my movieclip is already present on the stage. I notice it gives out error, that the parameters are null.

I'm building a drawing class that is passed an image, and it will run an ENTER_FRAME drawing lines of varying thicknesses and gradients to look as if it is being hand painted. All works well and is doing just what I'd hoped. My problem is after a while, it starts to hammer the CPU. I can understand why it could be taxing, but I thought the drawing API was meant to be rapid? Is there a way I can optimize the process? I am only using 1 enterframe, and it seems to get progressively worse the more lines are laid down. Does the Flash Player not render them as Bitmap after they are drawn? I'm just trying to work out why the more lines are drawn the heavier the swf runs.
