ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Access Component Params From Class Constructor?

have a movieclip on the stage, whose Class is "com.nestor.elements.letterKey". The class funcKey extends "key" which contains a "public var val:String". I have many instances of letterKey(asdfghj.... a full keyboard), so I'd like to use the IDE to arrange and pass variables. SO, within the Flash IDE/Library, I rightclick the symbol to access its component definition, and add a parameter for the var in the baseclass name:value,variable:var,default:whatever,type:Str ing).Now, in the constructor function for the baseclass, if I trace my variable: it is null.

I have extended an mxml component with an actionscript class. I'm trying to access a component in the mxml file using the id (in order to add an event listener) but I cant seem to do it.

I have encountered a problem when I need to load a third-party flash in to my flash. The flash is written in an erroneous way, it access stage in the main class constructor. I know that a display object can not access to stage property until it is added to stage, and certainly can not access to stage in its main class constructor. I observe 2 cases:
- If the flash run STANDALONE, it run well: I don't know why stage is assign before its constructor
- If the flash is LOADED by my flash, it yield null reference exception as expected
In the second case, if the third-party class remain unchanged, is there a workaround that load flash?

So I usually use an object in the constructor to receive the parameters like new Class({param1:00,param2:0099,etc).To be able to access those parameters from other functions inside the class I create an object, and copy it:

Is it possible to access a declared component as an IFactory within an MXML class? I've used this style of declaring factories many times for Skin Parts, but I've never figured out how to access those factories from within the MXML.
Here's an example of what I would expect to work:

I have a custom class, MyMC. The only argument the constructor takes is a string, which sets the text of a label inside MyMC.
In the Flash IDE I've placed an instance of MyMC, which is called mcOnStage, on the stage. Through the document's class Main I'd want to perform the constructor function of mcOnStage.

Some of the top level classes can be instantiated as well as called as a function (e.x. new Number() and Number(), new Boolean() and Boolean(), new Array() and Array()).
Usually this is used for type conversion or as a shortcut for instantiation. I would like to be able to do the same thing:

What I wanted to do originally was to create a logging class to interact with Flash/JavaScript, and be cross-browser compatible. I wanted to be able to use the log function as an alias of a method in the log class. This got me to wondering whether I could implement a custom casting function just because. I've now realized it's not possible, but was fun to play with anyway.

here is the scenario we ran across while working on our Flash AS3 project today.
/main/root.fla
/main/root.as
/main/sub1/sub.fla
[code]....
We have many sub swf's that are loaded by the main root swf. The root swf shows the art on the stage of the sub swf, and also runs some code from the sub swf's document class. However, we noticed the constructor was not getting called on the second sub swf if the document class is the same name- even if they are in different folders. Note that we publish our swf files to a separate directory (with the same structure as above) so it is easily copied to the web server.
-root.swf loads sub1/sub.swf
-the constructor of the document class sub.as in subfolder sub1 gets called
-root.swf shows sub1/sub.swf assets with the correctly constructed sub1/sub.as document class
-user chooses to switch to sub2

We decided to use a workaround where we basically changed the two document class .as files to be different names (e.g. renamed sub1/sub.as -> sub1/sub1.as and sub2/sub.as -> sub2/sub2.as, and updated the .fla's to point to the renamed document classes), and it works as expected. Hopefully that workaround is useful for someone.I realize most people just name every single file differently and keep everything in one folder, but when you have a sufficiently complicated project, things like this come up.

(Spoiler alert: It's not an issue of my package statement not reflecting the location of my class file.) When I have a class linked to a MovieClip in my library and that class takes an argument in its constructor method. That class will compile properly ONLY when it's located in my top-level directory (same dir as the .fla and Document.as files). If I move that class to a deeper directory, say com.place, the compiler will generate error "1136: Incorrect number of arguments. Expected 0.

I am creating a Weapon class for a game and the weapons itself will be the sub classes. The sub classes will hard code some values (such as max ammo and the weapon name).
I trying to access this declared data in the base class constructor, at the moment it's not outputting the values. Is this possible?
I've broken my Weapon class for simplicity:

My current workaround is creating a protected method in the base class to trace the information and calling that method in the sub class's constructor, this works fine but this doesn't seem like the most efficient technique?

There is a library component represented by Class A. But constructor of this class requires some parameters. When the component needs to be added dynamically, it's fine because of code :

But what if my movieclip is already present on the stage. I notice it gives out error, that the parameters are null.
Is their any way to insert constructor parameters for movieclips already on stage.

In the first frame, a MovieClip is created by ActionScript and placed on the main stage (This "MovieClip" actually uses a base Class called TextFieldHolder which extends MovieClip.) The Movie Clip has several TLFTextFields with instance names placed at various x/y positions in the MovieClip's first frame (the first frame has a stop(); ) Here is the trouble: When I try to change the values of the text fields in the Constructor of the TextFieldHolder class, I get an error that tells me that the TLFTextFields do not exist. I have found that I can access and change these text fields at any other time or place except for in the Constructor.The strange thing about this problem is that it does not occur in all of my projects.I am currently working on several different fla files and each one used TLFTextFields in the manner that I have described above. Almost all of them are displaying the problem, but some of the earlier ones are not.

For a project i am needed to move a vast range of movieclips over time on the stage.I thought to write a class to tackle it. my little class experience tells me you can't acces the stage in the constructor. well great, just add an eventlistener for the ADDED_TO_STAGE. 5: Since b.swf now loads a.swf,how can I set loaderinfo params of a.swf from b.swf?
So is there any way I can set loaderinfo params from loading swf to the loaded swf.

I am trying to things efficiently and put as little code as possible on the timeline.
I have a document class loading and working at runtime.
It creates a button that takes me to a different frame on the timeline.
I have a movie clip there. I put a trace in the constructor of the class of that movie clip but it will not show the trace comment in the output window-its not working. There are no errors.
I also tried instantiating the same movie clip from the document class-which worked-but the trace in it's class's constructor still does not output.

I'm just now learning the new object oriented way of scripting. It's been a wild ride, but I've finally learned how to keep script off my frames (very hard coming from as2).Here's my problem:
I have a TextField on the stage in my main .fla file named loadPercent.
I'm loading a jpg with preLoad.as and displaying the bytes loaded in loadPercent.
I can access my loadPercent TextField from my MainClass
but I can't access it from preLoad.as
the document class is MainClass.as

I get three '#1120 access of undefined propery' errors for each time i try to access loadPercent.
a few basic questions: 1. all my files are in a folder in my documents, not in the flash directory, is this bad? I've seen people using com.whatever etc.
2. my main .fla file does not share the same name as my MainClass.as (it's not named MainClass.fla) Is that a problem?
I'm assuming these are inconsequential because my code seems to work up to a certain point.

I have a flash banner and embedded the flash swf the usual way. The flash banner has an xml file that loads in images.when published it views and works fine. But when I incorporate into my site it doesnt load the xml file. I believe it is because on the site i have friendly URLS. so when you are on the home page it looks for the file in home/images.xml.when you are in about page, it looks for the file at about/images.xml.I believe that i have to pass a param giving the absolute path to the flash file so that it loads.

I have two components. One is called "InsideComp" and one is called "OutsideComp". OutsideComp has InsideComp as one piece of its component, and in my main MXML file, I have embedded an instance of OutsideComp. How do I access a public variable of InsideComp within my main MXML file?In Actionscript, I could just do something like:OutsideComp.InsideComp.valToChange = 5; But I dont know how to do it in MXML.
