Flex :: Access An Object In A Mxml File In The Constructor Of A Class That Extends It?
May 12, 2010
I have extended an mxml component with an actionscript class. I'm trying to access a component in the mxml file using the id (in order to add an event listener) but I cant seem to do it.
I get:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

I always don't call super() when I extends Sprite.But doesn't not calling super() cause any problem?Till now, I don't have any problem and I have never seen code which call super() in constructor which class extends Sprite. How about TextField? I don't have any problem about TextField, too. How to know whether I should call super() or not?

For example, I have the class Bullet, with a constructor: Bullet(start:Point, target:Point)constructor
But, if this Bullet class extends the MovieClip class, how do I pass start and target into it? Right now I am using attachMovie to create instances of the class. (They behave correctly with the static properties set by the constructor, but to be useful it needs arguments.)

Is it possible to access a declared component as an IFactory within an MXML class? I've used this style of declaring factories many times for Skin Parts, but I've never figured out how to access those factories from within the MXML.
Here's an example of what I would expect to work:
<fx:Declarations>
<fx:Component id="labelDisplay">
<s:Label fontSize="12" fontWeight="bold"/>

I'm having some troubles with the use of interface and inheritance in AS3. I've done lots of OOP in the past and what I'm trying to do seems obvious to me, but doesn't work in AS3. The question is : Is it possible to override a function that return an Object of class A, and make it return an Object of Class B which extends A ? It seems not to be possible, since I'm getting a signature error in Flash, when compiling. For example, the following set of class do not compile (the code in function definition doesn't matter):

I have a class CoverPoint extends Pointwith some extra function.except for that ther is no difference. I would like to use the functions of Point with a return value of Point, to calculate those CoverPoints.Can i turn the return value into CoverPoint (since all the vars are the same, there shouldn't be a problem with that, right?), so that it can be stored in my var cP:CoverPoint;

I've got an object declared and instantiated in my Flex application's singular MXML file: public var CDN:CDNClass = new CDNClass; I would like to access this same CDN object (and its public methods and properties) in another class declared in a separate .as file as such:
[Code]...
But when I try to access the public method parsePlayList in the CDN object in a method in the class defined in the .as file, I get the following error: Access of undefined property CDN The reason I want to do this is to break up the logic of my application into multiple AS files and have minimal MXML files, probably only one.

i came across this problem and i have no clue why it's happening. basically, consider 2 nested movieclips on the stage, something like stage -> main -> filler. both movieclips have instance names (main and filler).
[Code].....
this throws an error 1119: Access of possibly undefined property filler through a reference with static type A. can anyone give me a hint on that, as it works with class A, but not B extending A? i understand it was meant to work?

class BRIQUE extends MovieClip
{
function BRIQUE()
{
[Code].....
"graphics" is an image imported on the stage inside my symbol, but it seems not to be accessible this way (I get an error), nevertheless it works this way in as3 then what is the right way in as2 ?

I'm used to building applications using pure AS3. I always pass dependencies into the constructor of classes I make, but this method seems to not work out well for Flex MXML views. It seems like I should define setters on the MXML class, which map to attributes in the tag/class instantiation. But using this method I cannot specify which properties are required and in what order I expect them etc. What is the preferred method to give a Flex view it's dependencies?

I'm trying to have a class that is an Object to hold details about the movieclip that it is attached to.
[Code]....
and two others of this nature. I didn't think you had to declare the 'key' of the object as a variable before setting it in the Object. So my guess is that it is angry about the class itself, somehow. (syntax or the like)

This is a project I'm working on for a simple demo tutorial application in Flex. I am using mxml pages. You can see to the left that I will have my main application and then other mxml files (In the Examples Package) as the examples that will be loaded into the main application mxml. How can I dynamically pull the value from the object in the list to load the child mxml file into the container that I have further down in the application?

I want to clone a class object. I tried following from here:
package
{
import flash.net.registerClassAlias;
import flash.utils.ByteArray;
[Code]...
BUT this only works when the class has a default constructor and not when it has parameterized constructor:
how to clone a class object when the class has a parameterized constructor?

I followed the example from a previous question and I am loading an external swf using a loader and inside the loader event handler I am trying to cast the loader.content as my custom class PanelReferenceClip which extends MovieClip
When I publish I receive a this error:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
Just to make sure and test that the swf location was correct and the swf was actually being loaded, I changed the type of the content to as MovieClip and it worked fine.
EDIT: I also wanted to add that these swfs are being stored locally and not being pulled across the internet, multiple networks or servers.
I am not sure if I did something quirky in my class so I am providing the source to my custom class PanelReferenceClip
package com.components
{
import com.UI.DevicePanel;
import flash.display.MovieClip;
[Code]....

I made a movie clip that is linked to a class named "Fugel". In the "Fugel" class I want to access the object's properties (x, y, rotation, alpha...) that I created in the main FLA file. I'm trying to center it in the constructor, but I don't know how to. The "this" keyword doesn't seem to work.
Here is the code for the "Fugel" class:
Code:
package {
import flash.display.MovieClip;
public class Fugel extends MovieClip {
public function Fugel() {

have a movieclip on the stage, whose Class is "com.nestor.elements.letterKey". The class funcKey extends "key" which contains a "public var val:String". I have many instances of letterKey(asdfghj.... a full keyboard), so I'd like to use the IDE to arrange and pass variables. SO, within the Flash IDE/Library, I rightclick the symbol to access its component definition, and add a parameter for the var in the baseclass name:value,variable:var,default:whatever,type:Str ing).Now, in the constructor function for the baseclass, if I trace my variable: it is null.

I would like to include an MXML file in my MXML file in the same way you can include an external file in AS3 using the include directive. Using the include directive brings the code from the external file into the original file at compile time placing it in the same scope. For example,
Application.mxml:
<Application>
<source="external.mxml"/>

constructor function in a Class file. I've built several over my day and never heard a 'proper' answer about them. If your constructor function does nothing, not even set vars or listeners
ActionScript Code:
public function MyClass():void{
}
is it proper to keep it in the Class file or is it ok to leave it out completely?Or is this just something of preference? What do you guys think/do?

Is there a way to access the DOM-Elements of a mxml file in a way that you can in JS (e.g. using Prototype or jQuery)?
I need to know if a top-level element has a child (sub-sub-...-childs) with a certain id.
In JS (using prototype) it would be something like:
$('tabs').select('[id="something"]');

i'm trying to create some code which would create instances of arbitrary classes.for example... i'm making a game which will be hosted on a site, and characters i create over time will eventually be selectable for use in game. but instead of uploading an entirely new game whenever i decide to add a new character, i'd prefer to just update an xml file listing the characters, as well as an swf file for each character class.so during actual runtime, i'd have to create instances of these characters.... but i wouldn't necesarily know which character class constructor i'd be creating.... it would depend on who the user selects.if it were up to me, i'd be able to decide what class instance i'd like to make from a string variable (taken from xml).like this maybe...
var classname:String = "CharacterOne()";
var character:Object = new classname;
....instead of having to write: var character:CharacterOne = new CharacterOne();

I am taking over a Flex / MXML project for work. The last programmer lost the original source code so I ran it through a decompiler. In the main MXML file there are 3 lines that return errors. IMPORT COM.TURBO.*I've never heard of this and I can't seem to find anything on it. I assume its some kind of plug-in. Does anyone know what it is?
