ActionScript 3.0 :: Global Events Versus Registering Components?

Jun 22, 2009

I'm building an object oriented project with liquid layout in a loose MVC framework. My controller knows when the stage is resized, and it needs a way to tell all of the display objects to rearrange themselves appropriately when the stage resizes.

Option 1 would be extending the sprite class with a class that has one additional resize() function. On initializing the class it would register itself with the controller which would then noitfy all of the assets when it detects a stage resize.

Option 2 would be building some sort of global event that any child of the stage could listen for and do its thing when the event comes through.

I have 2 types of relationships in my project.

I am trying to register mouse event listeners for children of my parent object (Inheritance), which works. I just need to register those for the parent and they get dissipated down the hierarchy.However, if i try it for Composition i.e. if i register the mouse event listeners on the main (parent) object, they do not act on the components of the object.So, i have to register the listeners individually on each component.how to get event registration working for composition?

ActionScript 3 :: Alternatives For Registering Events On Stage?

Feb 1, 2010

I am programming a little software prototype as Flash/Actionscript3 application. Currently I registered some Events on stage - but it is cumbersome since stopPropoagation() needs to be used all the time. As Example: I am having a element shown via mouseclick would and a event for closing the menu on stage. Without using stopPropagation, the menu opens and closes again immediately. The hide-function is registered on some objects so just checking if target= stage would not do it, unfortunately.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Registering Multiple Mouse Events?

Nov 20, 2009

I have some code where there are 3 objects on the screen and i want it to highlight them in orange when you mouse over them, and when you click on one to select it, it highlights it in yellow.

to do this, im registering a roll_over, roll_out, and click event but for some reason it seems like all i am getting is the roll_over event.

Something strange is that in the code below i only ever seem to get roll_over events but if i only register the click event instead of all 3, i get the click event. It seems like the 3 events are somehow conflicting or something :/

You can also see an example of what im talking about at:

[URL]

click play to get to the screen where this problem is.

ActionScript Code:
package
{
import flash.display.*;

ActionScript 3.0 :: Global Variables: Singleton Versus Static Vars?

May 29, 2009

pros and cons of either using a Singleton that enforces only one instantiation of itself, versus creating one common class with static vars which can be accessed by all other classes that import it?

In my testing, importing but never instantiating works fine. I can even change the value of one of the variables and then have another class see that changed value later on in the program.

If I *know* I will never actually create an instance of my Global class using the New command (but will instead just reference the variables using the class's name), then why should I need to make it a strict Singleton?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Flash Avoiding Registering Events With Multiple MovieClips

Jan 3, 2011

Imagine that you have a lots and lots of the same library item on stage - movieclips - and you want each of them to be clickable. Normally, you would iterate through each of these and register an event listener on MouseEvent.CLICK for each one. It seems to me that if there are large quantities of these items this could be quite inefficient - on memory mostly - to have all these event listeners. I'm trying to figure out if there's a more "central" way to do this, where your main document class just registers once with some kind of central dispatcher using a custom event? Any time ANY of the movieclips are clicked, that fires this custom event and you can just query the event to figure out which clip was clicked.

Each movieclip that is clickable extends an AS class through its linkage, and when clicked, dispatches a custom event. If I'm using the IDE to put a lot of objects on stage, and these objects have linkages to their own custom classes, I don't want to ALSO have to go into the main document class and have it iterate through these objects to register event listeners on each one. I don't really want the document class to have that much knowledge about these objects (loose coupling). I'd rather the objects "communicate" through this mediator and not really worry about knowing more about each other than what you can access through the custom event.

ActionScript 3.0 :: MouseDown Versus MouseClick - Separating Two Events

Feb 16, 2009

I have a series of buttons on a page that I want the user to be able to re-arrange. To do this, I have a MOUSE_DOWN event listener that triggers a startDrag. However, these buttons are also essentially menu items so when user clicks on them, they should load the appropriate URL. I don't want them to act as menu buttons when a user is trying to move them about. I have three event listeners on each button, one for the MOUSE_DOWN and one for the CLICK event and one for MOUSE_UP but the function associated to the CLICK event also fires on the MOUSE_UP.

Flex :: Parent App Access Versus Events In Modules

Feb 2, 2010

Inspired by this Flex question, is it seen as better practice to dispatch an event back to the parent app, as opposed to calling a method on the instance of the parent app, from within a module? To me it seems that the module shouldn't know what methods are available at the parent, as such approach leads to tight coupling.

Flex - Invisible Components And Events?

Nov 29, 2010

I have Flex 4 application in which I have one component as top layer which displays something like tooltips, basically user sees "presentation" which explains usage and meaning of the tools "below", sliders, checkboxes, text fields etc. I made this "presentation" using sequences so first tooltip is visible, then becomes invisible, second is visible etc.

I tried to disable mouseChildren, mouseEnabled and other possible parameters which would disable those tooltips from preventing user clicking on some button or checkbox. Obviously those components which render tooltips even tough invisible, are still "clickable".

Actionscript 3 :: Send Events Between Objects On Same Level (Global Event Manager)?

Sep 8, 2011

I came to the point where I need to communicate between 2 objects (let's say Tank and the Cannon). It is tile game, and when the Tank approach specific tile I need my Cannon to shot the Tank. When Tank gets that specific tile I want to dispatch some custom event and have listener in Cannon class body to make the shot happen. Other way I would have to check in ENTER_FRAME loop (inside Cannon body class) if the Tank touched tile that runs the Cannon shooting - but this is not elegant and efficient. The issue is complicated by the fact that the Cannon and Tank are added to the Engine (document class) and can't simply hear for each other, because they seat on the same level in display list.

Initially I could addEventListener to the Engine, but this way my document class would enlarge to the XXL size (all listeners functionality, all methods for game etc). What I would accomplish is to have event listener in every Cannon object (defined in body class) listening for Tank's dispatching the event. I saw some 'Centralized Event Manager' article in the net, but can't download full classes [url]...

Flex :: Custom Components / Events And Scope

Apr 15, 2012

I'm trapping keyboard events on the stage and dispatching custom events through a framework (Mate, though I don't know that this is an important issue), but I'm pretty confused by the scope. The structure is:application (traps keyboard events and dispatches custom event mainPanel (receives dispatched events but mainCalendar (a child element) is null on debugging. Obviously if I try to call a public method on mainCalendar it errors out, even though it's a child of mainPanel. However, mainCalendar is NOT null IF I use FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.mainPanel.mainCalendar. Outerdocument and parentDocument do not expose mainCalendar either, BTW mainCalendar (a custom component inside mainPanel with public methods. Creation policy is 'all' and it's visible and exists long before I trap any keystrokes at the top level)Could someone take a minute and explain why the mainCalendar is out of scope when mainPanel receives a custom event, even though mainCalendar is a child of mainPanel. Is there a better way to manage the events so I don't have to always address the component via the topLevelApplication?

ActionScript 3 :: Events Between Spark And Custom Components

Nov 30, 2010

We are building an interface for a game. The interface has a tabbed menu at the bottom of the screen, with each tab displaying different aspects of an object (called a node). When you click on one of these parts, it becomes the focus, and we download it's details in XML, including all it's sub-nodes and parent nodes and then update the tab display accordingly, or at least that's what we'd like to happen.

What we have:
MainInterface.mxml
<s:Application...
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
public var currentNode:Node = new Node();
[Code] .....

We tried adding an event listener for "selectNode" to the dashBoard:SkinnableContainer you see see above, but it didn't seem to want to take. We suspect this is because dashBoard is from a spark component and the dispatcher for "selectNode" is on of our own custom components, but we weren't sure... in any case that's what the code assist seemed to indicate as we had to write it in by hand. We're not sure how to pick up the Events in FlashBuilder 4's debugger, so we're having trouble working out where it's going wrong.

Basically, when someone clicks on the label of a child or parent node (that is displayed by the itemRenderer), we want a URLRequest sent to our website, with the url specific to the node clicked on. We then want a URLLoader listening for the return which will update public variable 'currentNode' when xmlDownloaded is called by the loader. If you could clarify how the click event should be dispatched, what should be listening for it then sending the URLRequest and where the URLLoader that is listening for the xml data to return should be that would solve our problems.

Flex :: Events - Updating External Components From An Action?

Apr 6, 2010

I'm new to Flex and am having trouble understanding Events. I think Events are what I want to use for my situation. I have 2 components, addUser.mxml and listUsers.mxml. I access these from a ViewStack in my main application. When I load listUsers.mxml it shows a list of current users in a datagrid via a HTTPService call. When I add a user using the form on addUser.mxml I would like the datagrid in listUsers.mxml to refresh when I return to that view to show the new user. I've tried several different things with addEventListener and dispatchEvent but can't seem to get it working. Can someone help me with this logic?
