to restrict the maximum number of characters on a TextField by applying the maxChars to 30. This call exists before applying the html text to the TextField. I usually manage to make my textFields work properly.I have this TextField that I inject HTML formatted text (contained in a XML file). For some reason, almost all my tags are ignored (<b>,<i>,<u>,<ul> and <li>). I can only get it to render <br /> tags properly. I could use a StyleSheet, but I don't think it would make my lists work...Here's how things are set up:
Text I inject:
<text>
<![CDATA[<b>Some bold text </b>and some normal text <br/><u>This text is underlined</u> normal text to compare<br/><i/>This text is italic</i>]]>[code].........
Edit: So I decided to test having no CDATA in my XML, and adding the <b> tag in my AS3 code. Didn't work either. I don't get how I can have my fonts correctly embed, but Flash refusing to use them.

I have a variable called AICC_Student_ID, which is talking to an LMS to pull in a student's unique ID (usually the same as their NTID). I need to take that JS variable value, and slap it into a String for treatment.I looked at the work it would take to use SWFObject, and since this little swf is going onto literally thousands of pages, manually hacking each and every one is just not worth it.

trying to work with "simple" XML for the first time. I'm building a small CMS for a Flash based site and the content is held in an XML file. My problem is that many of the copy fields are XML CDATA fields. on the one hand, with:
$xml = simplexml_load_file($file, 'SimpleXMLElement', LIBXML_NOCDATA);
I can pull the data out of that node and the CDATA tags are stripped. My issues come with trying to save the data with:
file_put_contents($file, $xml->asXML());
Problems are: a) tags are interpreted with their HTML entity equivalents. I don't want this to happen.I gather this is coming from the asXML method because even if I do anhtml_entity _decode on the $_POST data it's still being converted.
b) because of the above, there's no way to add the CDATA tags because they also have their charachters converted.

I'm using a custom tooltip in order to be able to use html tags. The method I used is described here.I'm using SDK v.3.5. I also did a little hack so that the TooltipManager.tooltipClass would work (check this post for more details).Here's some code.

Everything works fine BUT 2 things: First, font colors tags don't work. If ever I use sth like <font color='0xadadad'>...</font> it won't work. However, if I use <u>...</u>, it works fine
Second, the <a href='...'>...</a> does not work either. I checked in several websites, and the solution would be to set the selectable property of the text to true.

I'm trying to target a specific tag and its children with a function I have.I have two functions written basically the same, except one is trying to reference a target. For some reason on the one trying to reference a target, I get the XML tag names still attached to the URL. Does anyone know why this would happen in one function and not the other?Working function:

I just finished troubleshooting a bug and though I would share so no one else had to deal with it.There seems to be and undocumented limit to the width of a TextField. and that limit is right around 8000. After about that much the text gets shoved to the left of the textfield as opposed to into the text field.Not something that most people are going to come across I know. I ran across it because I was making an RSS ticker type application and the textfield was being autosized to the width of the string.So I put an if statement in there to limit the box to 8000, the only problem now is that some of the text is going to be cut off.

I'm working on a textField overflow system for a project at the moment.I cant find a way to return a textField's htmlText complete with the original html tags.The system is used for splitting up a textField above a particular height into two textFields so the side of each other. The system works perfectly with unformatted text, but I cant seem to extract the formatting tags out of the left textField and apply them to the right - all I can get is plain text. (The system uses a StyleSheet by the way - so it is applied to both textFields).I 've tried:

I'm trying to limit the number of lines people can enter in an input textfield. I tried stuff with maxScroll, but that doesn't check if people press enter, so i end up with too many lines of text. I then looked at maxChars, but it's no use either, because users can still enter as many lines as they want.Is there no way you can combine maxChars and maxScroll? there also is "textfield.onScroller" which checks if the textfield is being scrolled. Can't i use an eventhandler based on onScroller? Like:[code]this results in people not being able to edit messages anymore after they reach the end of the textfield.I have no idea how to limit the number of lines in an input textfield. Anyone?

Is there a size limit on strings passed to a new XML variable during construction?I have noticed what I think is a hard limit on the size of strings passed as an argument to the constructor of a new XML variable in actionScript3. I noticed it while trying to pass a large string from javascript to a method in AS3.
Everything works fine as long as the string is less than about 330,000 characters, but as soon as the string I pass gets a little bigger than that (say 360,0000 or more) I always get a js error somewhere in the ExternalInterface and a ActionScript error when the data is recieved. I am running on IE.Here is what I am doing:In javascript I have:

Where text is some large string of serialized valid xml.Then in AS3, I have
ExternalInterface.addCallback("generateFromXml", generateFromXml); (called in initialize handler)

Everything works fine until the string exceeds about 340,000 characters, then I get this js error at this line in adobe code:

Does anyone know what the character limit for a string in AS3 is? I'm generating a rather large XML string in a flash app which I'm sending to a php script to parse and save to a DB. I was stepping through the code and it looks like after a certain period that my XML string is going to blank. I'm assuming that this is because it's going over a limit. I don't really want to change my design but I suppose I'm going to have to if this won't work.

I have an XML document that contains CDATA nodes with <BR> tags. I'm importing the XML and displaying it in a text box, but unfortunately the text box is actually displaying the <BR> tags, rather than inserting line breaks. I've set the text box to "Render text as HTML", and I've applied the XML data through htmlText, but it's still not working. If I insert text into the text box manually it will render as HTML, as in:

But if I apply the XML node, it just displays the <BR> tags, like this:

This is a typewriter effect but i need the XML to also read and render HTML. right now it just types out normal text and if you insert HTML it types out the HTML instead of actually rendering it.I need to insert a small image after every item in the XML.

I have some HTML loaded from an XML document that includes web links (anchor tags). I am using a TextField object to display the text, and am plugging the XML data into the htmlText property of the TextField, and the text is rendering with HTML markup, links are working etc.
The problem I'm seeing is that a new line is created before and after the link, so html like this:
hello world <a href ="#">this is a link</a> and all of this should be on the same line.
is rendered like this (with specific attention paid to the new lines): Does anyone know of a way to prevent these new lines from appearing when using HTML links within a TextField?

I have several paragraphs of text that is using the scrollBar component to give me some scrollability that part works fine. I also have the "render text as html" box checked because I have some HTML formatting going on. Anyway, all of a sudden the published SWF file started ignoring the bold tags <b>. It used to work fine. Now, anywhere that I have text surrounded by <b> HTML tags, it just omits that portion of my copy once the file is published. When I change the tags to <strong>, the text comes back, but in a normal font both with the fonts embedded and without ... neither makes a difference with this issue. I've also tried checking and unchecking the "render text as html" box and that doesn't seem to make a difference. Has this bold tag become deprecated? I'm having difficulty get a font to display as bold.
