ActionScript 3.0 :: Listening For Custom Event Dispatched From Parent Object In Child Object?
May 25, 2010
I want to listen for a custom event dispatched from the document class in a custom subclass. For example, let's say in the document class I have:
ActionScript Code:[code]....
So that the subclass will trace 'Event from document class received' when the 'customEvent' event from the document class is listened by the eventlistener. However, the output is only 'customEvent dispatched', meaning it wasn't heard in the subclass.

I have the following situation:I have an event handler, that displays small messages in my application's statusbar.These messages get passes through by dispatching events from custom components.A simple message could be like "HTTP Error" or so.Now, the main event listener, in the main application file, listens to the event dispatched by any custom component,but seems to refuse listening to events dispatched by custom AS classes.Here is my code for the custom event:
package main.events
{
import flash.events.Event;[code]..
So to sum it all up:
- The event listener listens to the custom event dispatched by any custom component.
- The event listener does not listen to the custom event duspatched by an AS class.
Those who wonder, the event really gets dispatched, that's why I added a trace call.

In short: I need an event listener in a custom component so all its instances (without editing them) react at the same time, fired by a dispatched event in its parent container. In detail: I have a custom component with Tab navigator. (The tabs are intended to show different preferences for different Languages.) I have a button bar with buttons for all the languages. There are a lot of instances of the custom component.
I want to click in a button of the languages bar and get ALL the instances switched to the same tab (the custom component contains the logic to change the tab). I can do it by adding the event listener for EACH INSTANCE of the custom component, so it calls an internal function that changes the tab. But it seems to be very coupled, isn't it? I wonder if it can be done in the master CLASS of the component, so it listen for events in its parent container, whichever it is. In my mind this code shoud work, but it doesn't (obviously ill'use a custom event to pass the new language value): this.parent.addEventListener("lang_change", this.change_tab); This way I can just drop an instance of the component, and see it working for itself.

i have a question to ask about asynchronous key controls This was what i did
[Code]...
and i checked with [URL]...?newspage=6249 and it looked more or less the same, so why is it that when i move my character and when i hold down a key, it just keeps on listerning to that keypress event listener, instead of just executing the other event. So say, i tap left and after which i tap right, it will work just fine, but if i hold left and tap right, the event listerner will still be listening to the left key. So, i was wondering could anyone point me in a direction as to how should i make my code stop listening to an event as soon as another event has been dispatched?

I have a simple 2 class game Im working on. It has a document class (BubbleBuster.AS) and a Bubble class (Bubble.AS). In the doc class I made a container sprite called bubbleContainer. I add bubbles (instances of Bubble.AS) to the bubbleContainer. When the game is over I fire a custom event in the bubbleContainer from the doc class like so:Code:bubbleContainer.dispatchEvent(new Event("gameOver"));Now I want to listen for this event in the Bubble children so I can kill tweens and remove things. So in the Bubble.AS I have:Code:parent.addEventListener("gameOver", gameOver);this compiles fine. But as soon the 1st Bubble is added to bubbleContainer I get this error (and no bubble appears):TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at Bubble/init()
at Bubble()
at BubbleBuster/addBubble()

I'm building an all flash site, where one .swf acts as the parent, and other external child .swf's are loaded in using .xml. The "Child.swf's" are a mixture of timeline animations, and coded swf's, and the problem I'm having is that they immediately start playing as soon as they are loaded. I've not been able to find any straightforward "child.start() or child.stop()" solutions, so I assume it's more involved than that.
I thought it might be a good idea if I could dispatch events from the parent swf that will set them going. I'm using the sharedEvents method to communicate in the reverse direction (child to parent), but I don't believe it can be used from parent to child (Please correct me if I'm wrong!) I know I could go to each child and put "stop();" in the first frame, but how do I start it again? I would also prefer it if not all the child .swf's started immediately, but to wait until others have completed their routines. Again the way I see it is to dispatch an event from the parent .swf as soon as I'm ready to set them going.

I have two swfs for a project, I had both of them to dispatch events to each other. Parent loads child and is listening for the compete load event. Once that event is dispatched to the child - the child dispatches a start event back to the parent. I got this working by copying the ModelEvent(my custom event) in each of the flash builder actionscript projects in the exact file structure ( i think i was cheating it there, since )
It broke when I put the swf on separate domains, so I'm thinking I'm missing something to share the custom event class between two swfs.

I have two swf file, A.swf and B.swf, each with its Document Class: B.swf is loaded in a MovieClip of A.swf. When loaded, B.swf creates an instance of CSDragger (it is a library object with its class extending MovieClip) and sets an ID property of this instance to a certain value. When this dragger is dropped by the user upon a MovieClip it sends a custom event containing the value of ID too. The custom event regularly reaches B.swf but never reaches A.swf. Aside from refactoring the CSDragger class (eg moving its handleDrop method in the B.swf document class), is there any way for the event to reach A.swf? I know I can intercept it and dispatch another event, but I was looking for a different solution (if any).[code]

I am making a game that uses MVC pattern. The game.swf is loaded into main.swf. I want to dispatch a gameOver event from the Model Class of the game.swf and have the main.swf(parent) listen for it but I can't get it to work.
I have game.swf dispatching events fine amongst itself just fine but I can't get the parent to hear anything.
I tried this in the main.swf
Code: Select allvar loader:Loader = new Loader();
loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, completeHandler);
function gameOver(e:Event):void

Im using the following code to place an object inside a container:
testParent = new MovieClip();
testParent.graphics..beginFill(0x0000FF);
testParent.graphics.drawRect(50, 50, 300, 300);
[Code].....
this gives the testParent object a margin of 50 from top and left. The testChild object should have have the same margin relative to stage. But doesnt.. The child object is at 0,0 relative to stage. Whats causing this?...

So I have a MC called "slider" slider has multiple graphics and clips and buttons in it. I have an event handler that tells the "slider" clip to move when you rollover and to move back when you rollout. Problem is that anything you rollover in the parent clip, once rolled off, even thought it is still in the parent clip, it triggers the rollout action.
Code:
this.slider.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OVER, slideOvr);
this.slider.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_OUT, slideOut);

If an object, or say... a document class, creates an instance of a class (and stores it as a variable), and it doesn't pass any arguments to the constructor of the class, can that class object, by simply having a function of it called by the parent, tell who sent it that command/request?In other words, can a class object know who called it (such as it's parent) via a (seemingly) anonymous call?

So, I have the following layering situation
Stage
--moveclip1
--movieclip2
----movieclip3
------movieclip4
I was wondering if it was possible for movieclip4 to be on top of movieclip1, even though movieclip1 is (and must remain) in a layer on top of movieclip2. This should happen when movieclip3 is being clicked (and movieclip4 shows up).
I tried adding this to the mouseclick event of movieclip4:
Code:
this.parent.parent.addChild(event.currentTarget as DisplayObject);
(I tried with and without "parent", and with different numbers of "parents"... cause I kind of lose counts of the parents there).
but... it doesn't work.

"ArgumentError: Error #2082: Connect failed because the object is already connected." when the child is unloaded .."ArgumentError: Error #2083: Close failed because the object is not connected."seems like the connection is persistant until the child is instantiated

I am trying to get a circle shape and a text-field sit inside a square sprite, using addChild() method. Both the children seem not to agree sitting in the lap of their parent; and are sitting at a distance, instead. If I create a square symbol on the stage and run the application, everything is fine.

I'm having a hard time working out the most appropriate way to move a child movieclip between parent objects.
I'm creating a board-game type game wherein I've dynamically created an array of 'Square' movieclips, with no visual elements, which are arranged in a 10x10 rectangle on the stage. I then dynamically add the appropriate types of piece movieclips to the various squares with the addChild() method. In general, a square should only have one child piece at a time.
All of this works well for setting up the play area, but now I'm having an issue with moving a piece from one square to another. I want to have the user click a square with a piece on it, then click the destination square to move the piece. I have the logic for determining where a user can move any given piece to, but I don't know how to actually move the piece.
The pieces are all different class objects that extend both a base class I call Piece as well as the MovieClip class. The main issue is that when dynamically adding the various pieces to the squares, I don't provide them a unique name to access them later. I don't bother with unique names because I have no way of knowing which piece instance will be in a given square, so using getChildByName(name:String) isn't very useful.
So I can think of two routes that I can take: Making a getter/setter for the Square class that manages a private Piece property (as well as the adding and removing of the child piece to/from the parent square), or using getChildAt(index:int) to try to access the child piece.
I want to go with the first route as it seems to be the most maintainable to me. My problem is that I can't work out how to manage empty squares in this scenario. My instinct is to null to private _piece property of one square once I've moved the child piece instance to another square... but I'm fairly certain that the private property is a reference type, and nulling it out will null the actual piece object even after it's changed parents.

I'm having trouble getting a custom event to fire properly.I have a main class which creates a dynamic textbox (using a custom textfield class (see below)).Another class called book (and extends sprite) , has a method called updateBox() which I want at runtime to update the textbox with some data sent by my custom event which the book class dispatches.The problem is that when the event is dispatched (and I see in the debugger that it does reach the dispatch line) the listener never fires...i.e., the updateText function is never reached, and hence the text box is created and assigned the INIT value but is never updated again..
Here is a scaled down version of my code:
Main Class:

Running into a problem dispatching a custom event from a parent SWF made in Flex Builder to a child SWF made in Flash CS4 that is loaded at runtime. Namely, whenever the child SWF is dispatched an event, I get a runtime error:
[Code]....
The custom event is defined in a standalone library that both the flex project and the flash project link to staticly. I wanted to go this route so that as I add new types of events, I can rebuild the application and flash swfs and not have to worry about moving .as files around (lets hold off on RSL's until I get this *simple* case worked out).
This error message makes it sound like the application defines a myCustomEvent at compile time, and the flash movie defines its own myCustomEvent when it is published. Then when the application is run, the myCustomEvent dispatched in the application doesn't match the one in the flash swf. Now I thought that application domains were supposed to sort all of this out, where the child uses the parent's definition for any classes that are duplicated. But when I load the child swf and use the current domain in the LoaderContext I still get the same error.
[Code]....

I checked that it was attached to the main class using "hasEventListener" and it returned true, also "dispatchEvent" returns true... but it ever reaches the function that I attaced it to... is there any thing I am missing?

I got a question about event dispatching and dispatching in flex.
My goal is to pass an email address captured in one component (Comp1) and be passed to another (Comp2). These two components are navigator content of a viewstack. The custom event dispatched the email correctly from Comp1 but somehow could not reach Comp2. The application (Main) looks like :
