Flex :: Custom Event Dispatch And Listening With Viewstack?
May 27, 2011
I got a question about event dispatching and dispatching in flex.
My goal is to pass an email address captured in one component (Comp1) and be passed to another (Comp2). These two components are navigator content of a viewstack. The custom event dispatched the email correctly from Comp1 but somehow could not reach Comp2. The application (Main) looks like :
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[
import events.LoginEventComplete;
[Code].....

I have a piece of software I'm working on that is using a viewstack with 3 canvases. With the change event I need to look for index 2 which is the last canvas when it changes to this canvas I need it to grab data from inputs from the previous two canvases.Within the viewstack events I've assigned the function change() to the event childIndexChange.
Here is the method:
private function change():void

I have the following situation:I have an event handler, that displays small messages in my application's statusbar.These messages get passes through by dispatching events from custom components.A simple message could be like "HTTP Error" or so.Now, the main event listener, in the main application file, listens to the event dispatched by any custom component,but seems to refuse listening to events dispatched by custom AS classes.Here is my code for the custom event:
package main.events
{
import flash.events.Event;[code]..
So to sum it all up:
- The event listener listens to the custom event dispatched by any custom component.
- The event listener does not listen to the custom event duspatched by an AS class.
Those who wonder, the event really gets dispatched, that's why I added a trace call.

I have two classes a Player class and a Bullet class.
In my Player class I'm dispatching an event(to fire a bullet) when the SPACE bar is pressed.
Assuming I already have an Event Class named FireEvent.
How would I write my code to listen for that event dispatch in my Bullet class in order to create a function to fire the bullet?
Player class
ActionScript Code:
package{
import flash.ui.*
import flash.events.*

In short: I need an event listener in a custom component so all its instances (without editing them) react at the same time, fired by a dispatched event in its parent container. In detail: I have a custom component with Tab navigator. (The tabs are intended to show different preferences for different Languages.) I have a button bar with buttons for all the languages. There are a lot of instances of the custom component.
I want to click in a button of the languages bar and get ALL the instances switched to the same tab (the custom component contains the logic to change the tab). I can do it by adding the event listener for EACH INSTANCE of the custom component, so it calls an internal function that changes the tab. But it seems to be very coupled, isn't it? I wonder if it can be done in the master CLASS of the component, so it listen for events in its parent container, whichever it is. In my mind this code shoud work, but it doesn't (obviously ill'use a custom event to pass the new language value): this.parent.addEventListener("lang_change", this.change_tab); This way I can just drop an instance of the component, and see it working for itself.

I am trying to get some code working from an example I came across. most of the functionality works but it is failing when it tries to dispatch a custom event. At the moment the code that is trying to dispatch the event is inside a class that handles amf remoting.the example has this line in it for the dispatch:
Application.application.dispatchEvent(new
RemoteResultEvent(RemoteResultEvent.USER_UPDATE_COMPLETE,"test"));
but that fails as it does not know what application.application is "Multiple markers at this line:
-Access of undefined property application"
I assume that this is because this was not written for a mobile app. I tried changing the dispatcher to EventDispatcher
EventDispatcher(
new RemoteResultEvent(RemoteResultEvent.USER_UPDATE_COMPLETE, "worked"));
but I then get this error:
TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert events::RemoteResultEvent@18337731 to flash.events.EventDispatcher.
This is the code in the custom event RemoteResultEvent.as :
package events
{
import flash.events.Event;
public class RemoteResultEvent extends Event {

I am trying to dispatch a custom event from one flex module to another.The code which dispatch the event is as below Application.application.Destination.child.dispatchEvent(
new AlgoEvent(AlgoEvent.GETFROMPARENT_LOCAL_EVENT));
here AlgoEvent is a custom event.on the other side the module which catches and handles the event has this code:
public function sendParametersToChild(e:AlgoEvent):void
{[ code]...
but when the statement Application.application.Destination.child.dispatchEvent(new AlgoEvent(AlgoEvent.GETFROMPARENT_LOCAL_EVENT)); is executed the debugger give the following run time exception:
TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert resources.events:: AlgoEvent@4182239 to resources.events.AlgoEvent.at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEventFunction()[code]...........

I have a file TestClass.as:

The dispatchEvent is definitely sending - returns true when I do trace( this.dispatchEvent(new Event( "initComplete", true))); When I run test.fla, fails silently. Function startUp fails to run.

I have been having a problem usign a custom event... I attached it to the the main class using "addEventListener" and fire it off with "dispatchEvent" in another class. I checked that it was attached to the main class using "hasEventListener" and it returned true, also "dispatchEvent" returns true... but it ever reaches the function that I attaced it to... is there any thing I am missing?

I'm looking off of this site: [URL]
Followed it closely and still nothing! I dispatch the Event alright from the first .as file and it runs the function featEvent() but that's as far as it gets. (found this out using trace statements)
Custom Event:
ActionScript Code:
package asFiles {
import flash.events.Event;
[Code].....
I believe the error is in the actual featEvent, but can't find where.

I have a main document class with an eventListener detecting a custom event.
The custom event exists in multiple swfs. Its task is to call a function which will remove a movieclip in the document class.
This is working in the loaded swf, but not in any loaded swf afterward.
Do I need to write the dispatchEvent differently if its trying to send an event that has been sent already?
I hope this isn't too vague without code examples. It would take me quite a while to extract the relevant code.

This is NOT duplicate of my earlier post (its is slightly different)But this is similar issue with similar error but its not the same error The error I am getting now is below while dispatching the custom event from my custom component
TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert events::MapEvent@a74ab51 to flash.events.MouseEvent.
dispatchEvent(new MapEvent(MapEvent.CLICKED_ON_MAP));
Note: The error in my earlier post is giving below error message
Type Coercion failed: cannot convert flash.events::Event@81ecb79 to com.events.ShopEvent
The difference here are two things, the earlier error is while converting flash event to custom event and now this one is while converting custom event to flash event and secondly, I have no clue why it is trying to convert to the mouseevent where I am just dispatching my custom event with proper listeners.
This is my custome event
package events
{
import flash.events.Event;
import ui.map.MapElement;
[code]...

I am trying to work with the EventDispatcher class to dispatch a custom event to stop a video from playing. The video plays inside a MovieClip with an attached class file called PlayerProfile. I want the video in the PlayerProfile MovieClip to stop playing when the user clicks on another MovieClip called ScrollBox. I'm getting no compile or runtime erros, but the code is not stopping the video. I have seen use of a public static constant to represent the custom event. Is that what I am missing here.

I want to listen for a custom event dispatched from the document class in a custom subclass. For example, let's say in the document class I have:
ActionScript Code:[code]....
So that the subclass will trace 'Event from document class received' when the 'customEvent' event from the document class is listened by the eventlistener. However, the output is only 'customEvent dispatched', meaning it wasn't heard in the subclass.

I have an <mx:Application> which contains a <mx:Module>. This module has several child modules. It also has some an instance of a class I have created. I am trying to have a method of this class dispatch an event that can be "heard" by the module and handled. This isn't happening.To be more clear, I am using 'dispatchEvent' to from inside a class method.There is an instance of this class in: mx.core.Application.myapplication.mymodule.myclassIt is the 'myclass.somefunction' that dispatches the event. I have a listener registered in 'mymodule'. Nothing happens when the function/method runs, however.

I have a document class called Main.as In the class constructor I have the following listener:
enter code here
var listeningFORModeChangeToStudent:Sprite = new Sprite;
listeningFORModeChangeToStudent.addEventListener(TellAllModeChangeToStudent.STUDENT,exp);
addChild(listeningFORModeChangeToStudent);
[code]....
In a third class I make a call to the despatcher in the previous class:
enter code here
var ThisTellAllModeChangeToStudent:TellAllModeChangeToStudent = new TellAllModeChangeToStudent;
ThisTellAllModeChangeToStudent.tellAllModeChangeToStudent();
I have trace statements in eveything and from this I know the despatcher in TellAllModeChangeToStudent is being called.The problem is that the listener in the main.as is not calling the function exp.I cant see why and I dont know how to check if the listener is actually seeing the dispatch event?

I have an event, which I have dispatched in my main.mxml:
var evt:UserEvent = new UserEvent(UserEvent.USERINFORMATION);
evt.userVO = storeObject;
this.dispatchEvent(evt);
I can listen for it while in my navigation.mxml file, by using
this.parentApplication.addEventListener(UserEvent.USERINFORMATION, onInfo);
But in other component, I can not listen for it, even trying the same as I did in navigation.mxml.
tracing it back gives me an undefined.
the second component is in a viewstack in navigation.

I am trying to listen to an event created in a spark popup tileWindow. The aim is to get an array sent and updated in the popUp, to be received by the calling application, when the popUp is closed. As commented inline below, I have tested that it reaches the point of dispatching event in the popUp- and never gets listened in main application. What am i missing?My customEvent is as follows:
package folder1
{
import flash.events.Event;
