ActionScript 3.0 :: Wrap Head Around Dispatching A Custom Event But Listening For It In Another Class
Mar 3, 2012
So I am able to dispatch the event from one class and trace out that the custom event was dispatched, but where I am having trouble is listening for that event in another class.
I have the following situation:I have an event handler, that displays small messages in my application's statusbar. These messages get passes through by dispatching events from custom components.A simple message could be like "HTTP Error" or so.Now, the main event listener, in the main application file, listens to the event dispatched by any custom component, but seems to refuse listening to events dispatched by custom AS classes. Here is my code for the custom event:
The dispatchEvent is definitely sending - returns true when I do trace( this.dispatchEvent(new Event( "initComplete", true))); When I run test.fla, fails silently. Function startUp fails to run.
In a nutshell I have a custom event that I am dispatching from one class that is not getting picked up by the other class even though i have added the appropriate addEventListener calls on its constructor. Here's how the classes are laid out:
The NetworkManager class extends the MovieClip class as does the LoginScreen and Application classes as well. Now within the oLoginScreen class I dispatch the ValidateCredentialsEvent by calling it this way:
ActionScript Code: dispatchEvent (new ValidateCredentialsEvent(ValidateCredentialsEvent.VALIDATE_CREDENTIALS, oLoginData, true, false));
Then when I debug the code, I can step through and see that the ValidateCredentialsEvent is being generated but it is never picked up by the oNetworkManager class whatsoever. Is this occuring because the NetworkManager and LoginScreen classes are children of the Application class and because of this can't capture events raised by one another without using the Application class as the intermediary to redispatch these events? My whole idea here was to create a generic network managing object that could be called from anywhere within the application, by any object, using custom events.
I have a parent swf and eight child swfs. The child swfs are loaded into an array at runtime on the parent swf using a Loader. I have buttons and functions on and in the parent swf to change out the child swfs. This all works just fine but here is my issue. On each of the child swfs I have buttons that need to call the functions in the main swf to change out the child swfs. The program is an interactive virtual tour and I want to be able to click on a door and have the next room's swf displayed in the parent swf. I'm trying to do this by dispatching an event from the child swf
ActionScript Code: mainPanorama.bedDoor.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, dispatchBedroom); function dispatchBedroom(e:Event):void { dispatchEvent(new Event("loadBedrooms")) }
that needs to be heard by the parent swf and the appropriate function called.
So far this specific code keeps telling me that addEventListener is not a function. I've tried quite a few variants of stage, this, and parent combinations in place of objectsArray but unfortunately something in the parent swf is not hearing the event dispatch.
I have a custom Flex 4.5 component (to be used in a List) -
Game.mxml (represents a clickable playing table in a card game): <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <s:ItemRenderer [code].......
But I never see the "game clicked: " trace. Does anybody please know why? I'm probably missing something minor, because I can see the "Clicked: 8946" trace.
I am making a game and I am having problems getting a class to handle a custom event... I know the events are firing because I put some trace statements into my custom event class. Here is how it's set up: I wrote a Singleton class to handle all game controls:
I got a question about event dispatching in flex.my goal is to get a custom event loaded up with some data and than bubble up to the eventlistener. my main application has and AMF service request inside which calls an service class. that class is supposed to dispatch an event when the AMF service request returns a result or fault and the main application is listening for that event.so inside my mainapp i add and listener like this:[code] However, this event never reaches the main application. Looking closely to it with the debugger, i found out that when the event is dispatched the listeners property of it is set to null.
I'm trying to dispatch a custom event from a custom ItemRenderer. This is my custom event package events { import customClass.Product; import flash.events.Event; public class CopyProductEvent extends Event { public static const COPY_PRODUCT:String = "COPY_PRODUCT"; public var picked:Prodotti; [Code] ..... The event from the function is dispatched correctly... I can't intercept it..
I'm building an all flash site, where one .swf acts as the parent, and other external child .swf's are loaded in using .xml. The "Child.swf's" are a mixture of timeline animations, and coded swf's, and the problem I'm having is that they immediately start playing as soon as they are loaded. I've not been able to find any straightforward "child.start() or child.stop()" solutions, so I assume it's more involved than that.
I thought it might be a good idea if I could dispatch events from the parent swf that will set them going. I'm using the sharedEvents method to communicate in the reverse direction (child to parent), but I don't believe it can be used from parent to child (Please correct me if I'm wrong!) I know I could go to each child and put "stop();" in the first frame, but how do I start it again? I would also prefer it if not all the child .swf's started immediately, but to wait until others have completed their routines. Again the way I see it is to dispatch an event from the parent .swf as soon as I'm ready to set them going.
I have been having a problem usign a custom event... I attached it to the the main class using "addEventListener" and fire it off with "dispatchEvent" in another class. I checked that it was attached to the main class using "hasEventListener" and it returned true, also "dispatchEvent" returns true... but it ever reaches the function that I attaced it to... is there any thing I am missing?
I got a question about event dispatching and dispatching in flex.
My goal is to pass an email address captured in one component (Comp1) and be passed to another (Comp2). These two components are navigator content of a viewstack. The custom event dispatched the email correctly from Comp1 but somehow could not reach Comp2. The application (Main) looks like :
I'm trying to wrap my head around writing .as files in MX 2004. As a practice file I made a MovieClip called SquareClip in the library of flash file. I made the linkage name SquareClip. My .as file called Square looks like this:
In short: I need an event listener in a custom component so all its instances (without editing them) react at the same time, fired by a dispatched event in its parent container. In detail: I have a custom component with Tab navigator. (The tabs are intended to show different preferences for different Languages.) I have a button bar with buttons for all the languages. There are a lot of instances of the custom component.
I want to click in a button of the languages bar and get ALL the instances switched to the same tab (the custom component contains the logic to change the tab). I can do it by adding the event listener for EACH INSTANCE of the custom component, so it calls an internal function that changes the tab. But it seems to be very coupled, isn't it? I wonder if it can be done in the master CLASS of the component, so it listen for events in its parent container, whichever it is. In my mind this code shoud work, but it doesn't (obviously ill'use a custom event to pass the new language value): this.parent.addEventListener("lang_change", this.change_tab); This way I can just drop an instance of the component, and see it working for itself.
I have a repeater component with custom event. My repeater components fires custom event holding data. My need is to dispatch event so other repeater components can access data from dispatching component.
I'm curious about event performance. I have a custom class that downloads files from a server and writes to your local system with AIR. This class has a few custom events that fire during a download process: File starts downloading, files finishes downloading, error occurred, progress, and a few others. This class was built for a specific project, but made coupled so it can be used for anything else wanting to download a file from a server. I'm starting to implement it into a new project, and a few events I'm not listening for, such as when the file starts downloading, or the progress of it, just the complete.
Does it strain overall performance having all the other events still dispatching, when I know they aren't being listened to? Would be be better to comment out the dispatchEvent() for the specifics I know aren't used, or does it even matter? There's obviously events dispatched throughout the SDK that aren't always listened for: Right click, drag, resize, etc. This makes me think it doesn't matter that these events fire but aren't handled, but since code is running and things are happening, that means there is performance going on.
Would it be possible for me to also dispatch non-custom events (like Event.CHANGE) from inside a class? I already did this with custom events which worked fine, but when I try to dispatch a the Event.CHANGE it will tell me that I am trying to convert a String into an Event (??). What I do is:[code]
I have two document classes. The main document class creates a empty movieClip and adds it to the stage in which the second document classes published swf is loaded into. The second document class has a button component on the stage in which once clicked just traces 'hello' to the output window.
What I want to do is upon clicking this button a Event is dispatched from the second document class, to the main document class. Now, I've Googled everything in this known world and have tried to implement examples to no avail. I'm really at a loss right now yet I stubbornly intend to keep banging my head against the problem. Below I have pasted both document classes minus the examples I've tried to implement thus far.
I want to have a main logic class that listens for dispatched events from an assortment of other classes.
for instance: i have a parent Map class that contains X instances of a State class. When the user clicks on a State class, i want to dispatch an event CLICKED along with the name of the state.
now this Logic class will see this new event and process the name of the state and perform some other logic stuff. no matter what i try i can only get it to work where the State class listens for its own Dispatched event. Which to me seems a waste, i could have just manually called the function.
I have read so many tutorials online about custom events/ dispatching and they are being used in a basic one class example.
I am developing a project where ClassA creates the instances of ClassB , ClassC and ClassD and adds the eventsDispatcher with them. ClassB and ClassC are able to dispatch the events back to ClassA which is fine. But ClassD is not dispatching the event. It only dispatch the event only when I call the dispatchEvent(new Event(Event.Complete)) function after giving 1 Second delay.
I have a class name ImageLoader that is used to load image and the dispatch a complete event when the image is loaded. This class is implementing singleton design pattern which means that only one instance is created always for this class.
Everything is working fine it is loading the image but in the initListener function i am dispacthing a complete event to let the other class Content (which passes the image name to this class ) that the image is loaded and you can access it now.
BUt the problem is the event is never dispatched or may be it is but I am not catching it properly here is code for my ImageLoader class.
I have a class in which a mc is used as a button. I want to use this button to remove from the stage its parent instance. Here is a small part of the class called LightBox
[Code].....
Is it possible to set an event listener of some sort onto this button, but have it listened for out on the maintime line? That way, when its pressed I can react to it from the main timeline and delete it? Or am I going about this the wrong way?
I've got a problem listening to the event. I've got 3 classes: Code: package com.zeeto.swfaddress { import flash.display.MovieClip; import com.asual.swfaddress.*; public class SwfAddress extends MovieClip { private var dispatcher:Dispatch = new Dispatch; [Code] ..... And... it doesn't work... is there any chance to listen to the EventDispatcher triggered by some other class?
`i'have a problem with listening events dispatching from their child classes. for example i have contentManager object which is controlling content at the top level of stage. it has a imageGallery object and in the imageGallery objectthere ise a collectionLoader object which is loading images.
now i want to add one preloader to contentManager which always listen for ProgressEvent. when the progressEvent dispatched i want to preloader going to active. becouse there is another objects that are loading images or other kind of files. i think it is a good apporach to solve preloader issue. so my problem is, when collectionLoader object loading images with using queLoader. my QueueProgress event dispatches ProgressEvent evey time, but my preloader object stand at the 2 classes up level, doesn't percive this event.
I want to listen for a custom event dispatched from the document class in a custom subclass. For example, let's say in the document class I have:
ActionScript Code:[code]....
So that the subclass will trace 'Event from document class received' when the 'customEvent' event from the document class is listened by the eventlistener. However, the output is only 'customEvent dispatched', meaning it wasn't heard in the subclass.
Originally this file I have was built using AS 2.0. The boss wants it converted over to AS 3.0.For some reason i am having a difficult time getting my head around the fact there there is no longer a _root/_parent AND what to use in it's place.
I don't mind reading up on it, I just can't find a decent article that I know is correct! I did a search and it seems like every person has a different ways of calling back one or two scenes/MovieClips.
This is the code that I am working with. Basically I am in a movie clip (resortInfo) located on the main timeline. I want to call back to the main timeline (level0) and go into the movie navigation (has an instance name of "navigation") to the frame label "images".[code]...
