View 5 RepliesHere's the example:
var cartesian:CartesianChart = new CartesianChart();
cartesian.width = 100;
var column:ColumnChart = new ColumnChart();
column = cartesian as ColumnChart;
Why does this not work? "column" ends up null. ColumnChart is a derived class of CartesianChart, so I would have thought I'd end up with a ColumnChart with a width of 100.
Is it possible to cast a variable as a type dynamically, where the type would be a variable of type Class? Consider the following (invalid):
var myClass:Class = MyClass;
var myInstance:myClass = new myClass();
For context: I'm working in Flex (4) to create a modal manager that will control various aspects of creating modals (via PopUpManager) and I'd like to keep it as minimal as possible. Components would be passed through the same functions, and rather than allowing any type of variable to be cast, eg:
[Code]...
So I just started using JASON to make my application data driven. I'm not doing any encoding, only decoding (I encoded once to create an example data layout). My question is, how come I can't cast the data that I read in into the object that it is? I know that question is useless without an example so here goes:This is my data class that I encoded once to create an example JSON file.
ActionScript Code:
public class ButtonData
{
[code].....
I want to have a loader function that passes the loaded data to the correct function. So I can do this:[code]Is there any way to type the second variable to avoid the clumsy switch routine, like so:Function (sendTo) ();
View 2 RepliesI have the code the following code:
in root frame I:
var prevSec:*;
var currentSec:*;
var lastPage:String = "Default/Index";
[Code]....
And it's not working ("canno't create property visible on String"). I understand that if finds the variable to be of String type.
What i need to do is based on the switch to set a certain movieclip to go visible false or true on frame 16. I need to know how to cast the String into MovieClip.
Does anyone know how to cast a string into a uint?[code]...
But i keep getting an error stating that there is a mismatch in variable types or i get a value of '65280' when I trace myUint.I understand that uint is a positive integer but i need to accept a string for the colour value and need to convert it to a string for use.
i have a list of items that get returned from a database. the list is composed of strings. what i need to do is convert each item into a variable so that i can use each item as an array.
for instance, my array will look something like this: deviceArray = ["osx106", "osx107", "winxp", "win7"];
what i want to do is turn each item into its own array. in AS2 (iirc) we had an eval() method. that is no longer supported in AS3.
I have 5 different arrays for a bunch of excercises, like so:
const oef1:Array = ["citroen","schoen","boek"];
const oef2:Array = ["huis","muis","jas"];
const oef3:Array = ["boek","koek","sok"];
const oef4:Array = ["ei","bij","bot"];
const oef5:Array = ["vier","mier","muur"];
Now I want to set the current game. I do this by copying the array, like so:
var curArr:Array;
var curExc:int = 1;
curArr = ("oef" + curExc) as Array;
I can't convince flash to accept the string ("oef"+curExc) as an Array. How do I do this?
I have searched Stack Overflow extensively but I think I simply don't know the correct lingo for what I'm looking for. It's the only possible reason I can think of why I can't find the answer here because I'm sure someone must have already tried this.
I have a variable in flash:[code]I then have a multidimensional array which has this variable name in it, but as a string.[code]What I need to do is be able to reference the string item in the array, but then cast it so that when I add a number to it the ACTUAL variable with the same name will be altered - anyone know how I can do this?For reasons I won't go into I can't pass it straight into the variable, it has to go through the multidimensional array item.
View 5 RepliesI have 52 symbols in my library each with class names Symbol1, Symbol2, Symbol3, etc. I want to create an array of these classes which will be used to create a random particle effect. How do I cast the var cardNumbers so that the array looks like this[code]...
View 1 RepliesI need to add values in a string (they're strings because I get a date as timestamp from a database and then pluck it apart in Flash with substring). Flash doesn't do math with strings. So is there a way to cast the string into an integer value?
View 4 Repliesi'm trying to modify a image, which is casted from a String:[code]In the inactiveElements Array are a bunch of ImageIds (way_0, way_1,..) and i'm trying to set the alpha-value of each Image.[code]with the trace i got the right String of ImageId but the cast to Image fails.[code]
View 1 RepliesI'm using as3corelib to decode/encode JSON strings. In my little experiment I want to encode an object (UserInfo) to JSON string and decode it back to the object, however it seems to fail at the convertion point (the last line), why would that happen? how can I make it work?
The UserInfo class
public class UserInfo
{
public var levelProgress : int;
}

just learning as3 for flex. i am trying to do this:
var someNumber:String = "10150125903517628"; //this is the actual number i noticed the issue with
var result:String = String(Number(someNumber) + 1);
I've tried different ways of putting the expression together and no matter what i seem to do the result is always equal to 10150125903517628 rather than 10150125903517629.
We're making a simple input text comparisons vs. some constant floating point numbers (e.g. 4.35). Using Actionscript 2 to Flash 9 export. Getting totally contradictory traces on two different computers compiling identical code...Here's some simple code we're using to figure out what's going on.
Code:
trace(typeof(Number(435/100)))
trace(typeof(Number(435/100)==4.35))
trace((Number(435/100)==4.35))
[code]....
Also, what behavior do any PC users have? I'm expecting the latter since they're generally intel chipsets too?Note: once i compile the code on my PPC mac, intel macs that run the SWF (but don't recompile the FLA) do return the correct booleans that match the PPC output.
im making a game and i have occured a problem.i have a hits text on the screen and every time a enemys bullet hits me it decrases by 1.and i wanna make that when it gets to 0 my ship explodes.
package com.asgamer.basics1

import flash.display.MovieClip;[code]............
i get this error 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type int to an unrelated type String.
I have a dynamic text field on the stage, instance name contentLength. I get this error: 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type Number to an unrelated type String.
Code:
import flash.display.*;
import flash.events.*;
import flash.text.TextField;
var mcHolder:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
mcHolder.width = 200;
contentLength.text = mcHolder.width;
I've created a textfield which I want to hold the time that is left of a flv being played. I also created a timer which will see to it that it gets updated.[code]However, when i try to compile i get this error message:"1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type Number to an unrelated type String.

View 3 Replies1067 Implicit coercion of a value of type Number to an unrelated type String. Why does this erroror come up in this code:
const PHI:Number = 1.61803;const PHISON:Number = .61803
var n1:Number=Number(a_txt.text)var n2:Number=Number(b_txt.text)
calculat_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, cbac);
function cbac (evt:MouseEvent):void{b_txt.text = n1 * PHI;}
I very new to AS. I'm getting an error with the below code: gotoAndPlay("scene2", 1); Error: 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type int to an unrelated type String. Go I want to do at this point is jump to 'scene2' when the time line hits a certain frame on scene1. Is this the correct way of doing it,
View 4 RepliesI am building little games never anything too big. I'm having fun. I'm getting the following error message 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type String to an unrelated type flash.display:DisplayObject.
It's got to do with the varObject variable I pass into the hitTestObject (at the end of the code) a. I exported the moveclip for actionscript and gave it an instance name so what's the problem???

i have a algorithm from javascript i would like to use in AS3 but get an error:Scene 1, Layer 'Layer 1', Frame 1, Line 81067: Implicit coercion of a value of type Number to an unrelated type String.
Code:
var a = [34, 203, 3, 746, 200, 984, 198, 764, 9];
function mergeSort(arr)

I'm using:

But I keep getting an "Error #2030: End of file was encountered." This is (probably) because the class I'm serializing is too big for the "String" object type in AS3. Is there a limitless object for storing an array of characters (or better yet binary), or am I going to have to make my own class? (like one with an array of strings)
I am trying to cast a String (from an array of strings generated by a for loop) which is referencing a MovieClip already on the stage.

In my external .as file, I'm trying to say that "if my current frame has the frame label of "enterdone", then go to the frame with the label "enter". The movie clip is called _cedars, and all of my frame labels, variables, etc. are set up properly. Here is my code:

Everything seems to be a string right now & that kinda ruins the whole xml as an internal data structure thing, I don't need a big tree of string I need typed data :-/ Are there any changes I can make to either my XML files or my AS3 code that will force it to cast ints as ints and Numbers as Numbers? Or maybe some kind of type schema I can impose? Not really worked with XML til recently so chances are I'm just ignorant of the canonical way to deal with this...
View 4 RepliesMy Flash AS3 application includes input TextFields. The user can choose from an array of fonts to use. These fonts are loaded at runtime from external SWFs. In order to support as many languages as possible, and to avoid having to load many MBs of foreign-language glyphs, I've included the "_sans" and "_serif" fonts. So, the idea is that a Russian user can type Cyrillic characters, or an Israeli can type Hebrew, when they select one of these two fonts.
Here's my problem: A Hebrew user has reported that they cannot type Hebrew characters into the TextField (only squares appear). BUT, when they copy-and-paste Hebrew text into the TextField, it DOES appear. This seems to prove that the Flash Player is able to find the appropriate glyphs on the user's system. But the user can't type them directly. If you've encountered this, have you tried a successful work-around, such as providing some kind of virtual keyboard interface?
We got some complaints from users not being able to type in certain chars like '@' and '.' in an input field (textfield). The Textfield is an input field type:
Font embedding seems fine (all needed chars are selected + '@' and '.')
Textfield restrict property is set: "a-zA-Z0-9@.\_\-"
Still some users complain not being able to type a '@' or '.' I've googled and searched the forum and the only thing I've found that could cause this was the wmode = 'opaque' property. We need to set this property to show up Facebook Connect windows. Otherwise these windows would get behind the Flash object in the HTML page. Another reason could be related to the regional settings of the keyboard, which might be faulty interpreted by Flash. Or could it simply be related to a faulty restrict (regex) property?
