I have a custom component extending Group and containing a viewstack child. The component is coded in actionscript.
When instantiating the component in mxml like so:

<mx:HBox backgroundColor="0x22DD63" width="100%" height="100%"/>
</components:CustomGroup>
...I would like to override whatever function that adds the children to the parent Group and add them to the child viewstack instead but I can't seem to find where the adding occurs. Breakpoints in addChild and addElement shows that they are not called during the add.

Would anyone happen to know how to change attributes like .z, .rotationZ, rotationY etc on a created MovieClip/Sprite or whatever. Because when I create a new mc or sprite and try to change these attributes the object just disappeares.

So here's the situation: I have an XML file that is holding a short list of nodes, all of which have two attributes associated with name and a score. This file is already loaded into flash and creates a high-score table, of sorts. Now, what I want to do is to be able to grab data collected in the application, use that to change some attributes in the XML file and have it save that change. So basically I have a class which adds items and needs a drag and drop. I change the x value of the entire contianer class simply by this.x = something
By drag and drop all the items slide across the screen. When I trace the x value of the container class it has changed, but the x value of the items stayed the same (although their x value on the screen definitely changed).

I have an mp3 on my site that is loaded via an xml. I have an action on the xml that allows any song to be played first by assigning an attribute. However, I want another song to play when a selected button is pressed on the flash file. But I do not want to load a new xml, instead, I want to change it using an attribute. I am dynamically creating a number of objects (movieclips) which all have a number of attributes.[code]and so on. i.e sub attributes. I don't think this is possible? Only sprite and movieclips can have dynamic attributes so unless atrbY is a movieclip (which it isn't, it's a string) it isn't allowed?Each object can have suboptions with further attributes associated with the chosen suboption.Later in the program I will manipulate, read and interact with the objects and they have text display behaviours dependent on the suboption chosen. That part (should) be straightforward! heh. One the object has the attributes attached in a usable format, accessing them should be simple.This will be for a store. i.e t-shirt1 has size small, price 10, size medium, price 12, size large, price 14. t-shirt2 has size medium, price 35, size large, price 40 and so on.[code]
This format of the XML can be adjusted if it would make the parsing easier.I am currently reading the XML in, stepping through, grabbing the individual parameter such as category and then adding it as an attribute of the object and it works fine. i.e. I end up with obj.category = 'catname'. However, on suboptions I am having a problem.Should I put all the suboptions in a multidimensional array and use nested loops to apply them to the object?I would still have the problem of objX.suboptionarray[Y].suboptionprice which isn't allowed? In the above XML case Y would be 0,1 and 2 giving 3 suboptions to objX and each suboptions would hold attributes such as pvid associated with that suboption.I could go down the horrible route, obj1.suboption1subptionprice ; obj1.suboption1suboptionpname; obj1.suboption1suboptionvalue; obj1.suboption2suboptionprice; obj1.suboption2suboptionpname and so on and so on for each suboption which could be five options (small,medium,large,x-large, xx-large) and which would "work" but would be bad programming and involve splicing names to get say, the "third" suboptions' price and pvid e.t.c
Going down the route of mutidimensional arrays sounds good except that on say 50 objects I would have stacks of arrays which I'm guessing isn't great in terms of resources?.Just to add, the number of suboptions varies between object, every object has a minimum of one suboption (default option) but can have as many as needed (unlikely to be more than 5 but should be scalable). i.e some t-shirts only come in medium whereas some have many sizes.I have a fair amount of leeway on the format of the XML which I generate from the database so the formatting of that could change to make the parsing easier.

When I mouse over a movieclip, I want its alpha level to change. Here's what I have:

It does work, but the mouseover only registers when the cursor is over certain areas of the movieclip.

[URL] Theres the example to work with....anyway....as you can see, im loading in movies externally...each on its OWN different level....what i want to do is make it so that when i click a menu option on the left, the current swf loaded on the stage closes and the new one comes up (to avoid the clutter of 10 differnt windows all scattered).....here are my thoughts:
1. have variables on the root timeline that are basically "currentLoaded" and "currentLevel" -- which basically will store the name of the currently loaded swf and the level that its on.
2. each swf would have code on frame one that would see if the 'currentLoaded' varible is blank, and if not...it will close the current loaded swf ....
my dilemma is that i dont know how to change the level dynamically...i know you could do the instance name like this:

I have some dynamic text I want to change the attributes of. For instance, I would like the first few words of each paragraph to be BOLD and to be a different color. But when I select those words and change it to bold it makes ALL the text in the text box change to BOLD.

I'm working on a tile based game, inspiredb by tutorials from the book "the essential guide to flash games". Please have a look at [URL] -- edit: by the way, the game idea is by no means mine, but i want to replicate the old game "sensitive" from the c64 [URL] for learning purposes I want to add shadows to all objects that stand in the water. However, since I want to keep my sprite count to a minimum, I have put all objects that don't do anything in a background bitmap. The best solution I can think of is to have:
1) a background bitmap (won't change during level)
2) a background shadows bitmap (won't change during level)
3) a sprite layer
4) and a sprite shadow layer at every screen, but this seems like a lot of work for just shadows.

I'm building an Xml-driven application. I create new states in a separate actionscript-class.These states all contain a DataGrid. I can switch the states in the Main.mxml.
But now I would like to access certain children of the DataGrid. In this case I would like to toggle the visibility of GridItems, from a Button in the Main.mxml.
How do I have access and apply this to the already created states ? I tried to create RemoveChilds and override/push it to the state.All I archieved was to remove an entire GridRow at the very last state, but it should be just one GridItem at every state.

I am having trouble parsing some xml that has a few attribute names with : characters in them. The compiler is not throwing any errors and when I trace my complete xml object out it is all there, however when I try to trace out any element or node it keeps comming up undefined. I removed the attribute names with : characters in them and everything works fine. I cant seem to target the attributes either to delete them.

I don't understand why the following does not work:
Pushing the Button resizes the photoCanvas's height (gets taller or smaller). Since the photoCanvas control is a child element of the VGroup shouldn't the container update itself to the new height? The Vgroup has ALWAYS the same height, no matter what the (total) height of the children is! I would like the VGroup to adjust itself and get a height value equal to the sum of its children heights. Is this not possible??

I am loading in some images and adding them to a movie using: mc.addChild(imageLoader); once all the images have been loaded in , i want to alternate the order of the children, so a different child is in the front and in view. i have been reading up a little on it and it seems the example i find are changing the order of different mc's . whereas i have 1 mc and im trying to change the order of its children.
