i know this may seem kind of dumb, but how does one access the document class from a child movie clip on the stage?
i have a property in my class. Just a string for testing:

it traces on the root time line, but it errors out if tracing it from a movieclip on the root time line.
I have one movieclip object with a custom class.
That class has a loop that creates / instantiates a number of copies of another movieclip from the library. This second movieclip has a textfield child in it. When I convert this textfield to a movieclip I can access the properties of it fine, but just as a dynamic textbox I can't access it.
This is the custom class of the second movieclip that gets instatiated a few times by the first custom class...
This custom class relates to a movieclip that has a child MC called recent_text (which I can access ok) and in that child is another child (a dynamic text field called "aDynamicTextBox", which I can't access)[code]...

i m getting an error, i am loading an external child swf file to main parent swf, and want to access the document class of the child swf through parent swf document class using application domain. Now when both child and parent swf resides in same directory it's works properly with application domain means we can access the document class of the child swf see the attachment samedirectory.zip and when we move child swf and it's document class to sub directory that time we are unable to access the document class of the child swf see the second attachment subdirectory.zip

How to access a display object on the stage in a class which is not a document class?
I am looking for a solution that doesn't involve passing the stage as a parameter to the class.
One solution i always come across is using "TopLevel.as". Is it a good method because as far as I have heard using global variables is not recommended because it might cause some problems while working on big projects.
Just tried using cs5 on my new macbook and I have a tlf text object on the stage with an instance name of mText. I tried to access (mText.text = "test") it like this and got a null object reference. I tried to trace the stage from my document class and it was null when the tlftextbox was on the stage but i could trace stage correctly when I deleted the textbox. [code]...

I am trying to add a keyboard event listener to the stage, to detect when a user clicks the left or right arrow keys. But this listener is called from inside a class file which is imported into the document class, therefore I think it doesn't know what "stage" refers to. How do I solve this?

Is there a way to get an instance reference to the document class to call a method of it from the stage's timeline?I see that here's a possible solution: using a singletonOther solution I though of is using stage.getChildAt( 0 ) but it's not very nice.Is there an 'official' instance reference? because the document class is obviously instantiated at startup, but is that instance accessible in any way without having to use a custom solution like the ones mentioned?
View 1 RepliesI have created a game in flash, and due to the nature of the game, I have many movieclips placed on the stage manually in Flash CS4. They are not programmatically added as children to the stage, and so I am having difficulty getting access to them in the document class. So far the only method I have been able to use is to do stage.addChild(active_area); (for example), but there are many movie clips, all very differently named, so this method seems incorrect.I've discovered that my MovieClips are not children of the stage, but in fact MainTimeline, as when I for loop through stage.getChildAt(i);, only one child, root1, is traced out. How can I access movieclips that were placed on the stage in the timeline from the document class, without having to manually add them as children to the stage? So it looks like my problem wasn't that I couldn't access the MovieClips, it was that I wasn't modifying the MovieClips' values, so I wasn't registering any change in them.

I'm trying to access a text input that I've already placed on the stage (inside a movie clip) but with no luck.I've defined an instance name for this dynamic text field which is currentUserCount.I've got something like this set up in the document class actionscript file:

I need a class code to access a child instance of another class code that is on the stage. I have a class code named Ball.as. On the Time Line is a child of the Thing class. It is call newThing. Here is the code in the Ball.as file:

I have a flash file which uses php to manipulate a database and returns a variable (data_xml) of xml formated data from the database. This happens, along with other things, within the parent. Now I have a child movieclip that displays the parsed data but I am having trouble accessing the variable from within the child movieclip. The code related to this is:

and I get the following two errors which point to the second line as the problem:
1151: A conflict exists with definition myXML in namespace internal.
Warning: 3596: Duplicate variable definition.
I have unchecked "Automatically declare stage instances" because I've seen that suggested for the 1151: error, but I still get the same two errors.
I'm having an issue accessing a video that is in its own movieClip and is part of a parent movie clip. It's on a different keyframe from the 1st frame where the majority of my Acitionscript 3 is running from. I keep getting this error that says it can't access it because the instance of it hasn't been created or isn't on the stage yet.

I am attempting to add a movie clip to the stage when a button is triggered. When the user clicks the button the movie clip is added to the stage; it works fine, but the following problems occur:
1) The appearance of the movie clip is delayed.
2) The sound in the movie clip starts to play but the movie clip appears when the sound is finished.
