What I need to do in Carousel.as is that, get the images in the MC to carousel (d'uuh).So, how do I get those objects from the Carousel.as class? I have declared the names of things in it as public vars but no luck so far.
Hierarchy of content:
content --on some frames-->carouselcontent(named in IDE - of Carousel type)-->image1, image2, image3(all named in IDE)
Hierarchy of all:
stage-->content(Content.as)-->carousel(Carousel.as)

I have created a class, call it Class1, that has various objects drawn on the stage (drawn in the IDE). It also has a function, called setColour, for changing the colour of those objects. The function works fine if I call it from within Class1.
Now I have another class, call it testClass1, that imports Class1 and calls the setColour function. First of all, none of the stage objects from Class1 are visible. Secondly, when setColour tries to modify the colour of an object, I get the error:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
This is the code for testClass1:

I've googled this to no avail, I've only found how to manipulate the stage itself and not a display object on it,I have a movie clip on the main timeline with instance name displayName. I created a button that should change what frame displayName goes to (in order to...did you guess it?! diplay the Name of the button.So I am trying to write the code in a reusable fashion and have the buttons all linked to a class called GeoPuzzle. Inside GeoPuzzle I instantiate a touch event and run the code. However, the function has to be able to change displayName in the main part of the timeline and, of course, the compiler says displayName doesn't exist because I'm in a class and I'm talking about the stage.[code]How can I tell displayName to change it's current frame from within display object class?

I have created some (TextInput, ComboBox, CheckBox) Component instances (created as a public objects) in a Document class and added them to the stage.
Now I have created a custom class for a movieclip in library and instantiated it in the document class (also a public instance).
I need to access the component instances in the custom class. How to do this ?
Also, Is it a good practice to use ENTER_FRAME event frequently ? because if I can't access the above components instances in the custom class then I will be left with no choice but to use ENTER_FRAME event in the document class every time I need to change some value in the components...

I was wondering if there is a simple way to access variables from a class object, where the variables are not actually a part of that class. So if you had an array defined on the first frame of the stage, and added some elements to it, you could use the methods of the custom class to manipulate the array's data.

It might not seem logical as to why you would ever want to do that, but it's a very simple example, and it's the means I'm after, not the result. I'm creating a list of functions available to execute by a user via an input field. To keep things simple I made them the methods of a class. The issue, however, is that these methods need to manipulate objects which are on the stage, added and removed by a separate controller class. Passing the objects by reference to the class as a parameter would not be viable with what I'm trying to do either.

I realize this is kind of an odd issue, but I am wondering if there's any way to get Flash to allow me to access a class's static functions using a class variable that points to the class. Example:I create a class called FooClass that has a static function named fooI then create a variable of type Class that points to it

One problem I keep coming upon is that I'd love to access the custom variables I define within one class from another class. I have a class, call it MyClass, and there are several variables that I need to be able to access each instance of from within the class.So for instance, I need the object myObject1, a member of MyClass, to store the variable myNumber.From the main timeline, if I trace myObject1.myNumber, I get whatever number I've stored.
However, I need to check the numbers against another parameter, so I need to be able to test if myObject.myNumber == myOtherNumber. But from within the class, if I trace this.myNumber or myNumber I get null.What is the proper syntax for accessing a variable within a class?

I can't find a way to directly access a MC (or textfield, etc) on the timeline from a Class loaded into my Document Class. No problem from the Doc Class, but can't do it directly from the loaded Class. Is there a trick to essentiall extend the Doc Class AS from another external class?

The Main.as file will have all of the game logic, such as the mysteryNumber.
The other actionScript files represent rooms that the user may click and depending on the 'mysteryNumber', it will execute the 1 of 6 scenarios.
So for example, if a user clicks the Library page, the LibPage.as will call the 'mysteryNumber' and execute some code to display on the library page.
It will be the same for the other 4 rooms.
The problem I have is that the LibPage.as won't call the 'theNumber' property from Main.as

I have 2 classes, Display holds the currently selected Component:

Component has an ID string and the selectedComponent variable is set on click:

Removing the selectedComponent variable type so it reads public static var selectedComponent; removes the conversion error and seems to change the ID variable but it appears to only be a copy of the object.

I'm having some troubles with the use of interface and inheritance in AS3. I've done lots of OOP in the past and what I'm trying to do seems obvious to me, but doesn't work in AS3. The question is : Is it possible to override a function that return an Object of class A, and make it return an Object of Class B which extends A ? I have a class CoverPoint extends Pointwith some extra function.except for that ther is no difference. I'm just starting with OOP in AS3 so apologies if this question is too simple...The goal of this script is to have a button change it's own features (colour and transparency) and change the alpha value of a loaded picture.There are 27 buttons for 27 (stacked) pictures.In the fla is the following code:[code]When I try to access the picture (= portrait class and the test_portrait var in the fla) it can't be found. The object and the loader have for example this path when I debug: Movie Clip: Frame=0 Target="_level0.p_4.l_4. But when I do trace(getChildByName("p_"+tmp_name)); in the P_button class it returns null. Doing the same trace from the fla returns: [object Portrait] Why can't I access it from the P_button class?

I'm trying to write a class that somehow emulates the old AS2 gotoAndPlay(); function, but i'm failing to find a way to reference the timeline that is calling the Class Constructor.
this is what i am using to call the class, i'm placing this code in the frame of the timeline i want to control. but it always gives me a null error.
I Know senocular adressed the timeline issues in one of this forum's post, but i can't figure out what to do in order to register this class in the specific timeline in order to control it.

Ok, so I made a custom class, but I did not want to add all the text to it through code (much easier to type it in flash on the frame). I name the instance aScoreBoard.
As my code runs, I need to call some of the functions that are part of the ScoreBoard class. As the code gets to this point, I try this line:
aScoreBoard.UpdateScores(passArray);
which will update the scores on the scoreboard. When that line in AS3 tries to execute, I get this error:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
at Main/Main:ayEnd()[C:projectsDev_LearningLongJumpsrcMain.as:616]
at Main/Main::ButtonAfterJump()[C:projectsDev_LearningLongJumpsrcMain.as:606]
Is there a way to do things this way? or will I have to go and do all the extra text entering in the code?
