ActionScript 3.0 :: Child Class Object Instance - Anonymous Call

Sep 15, 2010

If an object, or say... a document class, creates an instance of a class (and stores it as a variable), and it doesn't pass any arguments to the constructor of the class, can that class object, by simply having a function of it called by the parent, tell who sent it that command/request? In other words, can a class object know who called it (such as it's parent) via a (seemingly) anonymous call?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Stop And Play Methods - Instance Name

Apr 30, 2009

I have recently adopted an FLV from someone else. It is structured "unconventionally" at best. For this reason (and because I am not well-versed in AS3), I haven't been able to get a pause/play button to function properly. About the file, The project is a 6-7 minute demo for a new product complete with voiceover. You have to drill in 3 movie clips deep before you can get to much of the animation. There are gotoAndPlay functions at the end of each 3rd-level movie clip that refer to a frame on the 2nd level.

On the 2nd-level frame, there is a stop function which allows the next movie clip to play. Each movie clip contains a sound layer for voice over. About the play/pause button. The instance name is pauseBtn. The button code below is on the 1st frame of the main timeline. There is a keyframe on the second frame for another bit of code. The button itself is a 2-frame MC that spans the entire main timeline. The event.target.gotoAndStop() lines are working properly to change the look of the button.

My button scriptstop();
import flash.media.SoundMixer;
var pp:Boolean = true;
function ppState(event:MouseEvent) {
if(pp) {
stop();
[Code] .....

What happens when I test the movieThe animation plays without problem as long as the button is not clicked. I haven't been able to see a pattern in the chaos that occurs when the button is clicked.
Sometimes nothing happens.
Sometimes it stops the sound only.
Sometimes it resets to the beginning of the movie.
Sometimes it starts play random parts on top of what was already playing.

This error appears in the output pane.
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

Actionscript :: Static Versus Instance Methods

Dec 23, 2009

I'm working on a video player and I initially developed the player with everything in the .FLA file with no classes. Then I started modularizing my player into classes and realised that my classes are static methods rather than instance methods which doesn't seem to be needed in my player. My question is - is this a bad design to have all of your classes methods to be static rather than instance methods ? As I dont see the need (yet) so that's why i geared more towards static methods, is this a bad design?

Flash :: Unable To Convert An Instance Of A Class To An Instance Of The Class's Subclass?

Sep 15, 2011

I'm using a library that has a function that returns an instance of some class Engine.

I'd like to tack on some interfaces to Engine, so I subclass it class InterfacedEngine extends Engine implements AwesomeInterface. but when I change the code that uses the classes from this:

var engine:Engine = generateEngine();

to this: var interfacedEngine:InterfacedEngine = generateEngine();

It gives me a runtime error (elision mine):

TypeError: Error #1034: Type Coercion failed: cannot convert ...::Engine@1bc2bf11 to ....InterfacedEngine.

What about AS3 classes am I misunderstanding?

ActionScript 3.0 :: Access Values Held By A Class Instance From Another Class Instance?

Oct 14, 2009

I have to admit I pretty much ran away from Flash when AS2 came along and only used it for animation purposes over the last 5 years.So I'm having a major crash course in AS3 in Flash CS3 and I'm not enjoying it one bit. I'm getting maybe 10mins of finished work per hour as I try to figure out the limits and rules of AS3. Quite often it seems that AS3 simply can't do what I want it to. Anyway: Characterchecks.as is the main class and it loads a bunch of XML into four arrays. The file starts like this:[code]If I trace the value of, say, cc._Categories from the main FLA, it's empty. I'm guessing that the next line of AS in the main FLA doesn't wait for the previously called function to complete? (This may tie in to my next problem)My next step is that I want to display various things based on the data in the array. I have another class, Display.as which will hold all the functions to create the items on display. I thought it would be best for these to be a separate object. I wonder if I'm right?

So I declare an instance of Characterchecks in the main FLA and call it cc, and then run the functions to populate the arrays... Now I create an instance of Display and call it cd. How can I get functions in cd to see the values of the variables in cc? And if the main timeline can't tell that the functions aren't finished filling the arrays, how is cd supposed to know?I might be asking dumb questions, or maybe I'm doing things ***-backwards, I don't know. I'd appreciate any help, I really would. This whole thing has me at the end of my tether... being the most technically advanced person in my circle of co-workers and web design friends means I have no-one to explain why things need to be done a certain way or what the best way is.

ActionScript 3.0 :: Call Methods Of A Loaded SWF?

Feb 13, 2008

I've written a pre-loader for my game, it uses Loader, URIRequest and LoaderInfo to display a bytes left/total counter as the main game SWF loads - this all works fine.

However what then happens is that the main SWF constructor is called, so the game starts running "in the background" while the pre-loader finishes off.

I moved the 'start game' code from the constructor into a different function but I'm now left with the issue of how can I actually tell the main game SWF to start?

You can't do loader.content.go() (where go() is the function I want to call).

How can I access methods of a loaded SWF? Or is there another way? I tried dispatching a custom Event from the pre-loader, but the game SWF just never heard it - but is this the right way to go about things?

I really want to pass some bits of data from the pre-loader into the main game SWF too, but until I can figure out how to make them both talk I'm totally stuck! Is there a way the game SWF could reference any variables set by the preloader?

Flash :: Use Graphics (for Ex) Methods Without Prefixing An Instance Variable?

Jun 28, 2011

I'm new to AS3 and HaXe, but was hoping to find a way to use methods from a final class (Graphics) without always prefixing an instance variable.Instead of something like this:

var gr:Graphics = flash.Lib.current.graphics;
gr.clear();
gr.beginFill(0xffffff, 1);
gr.drawRect(0,0,400,400);

I was hoping to get something that works like processing.org, but I guess a lot of the convenience there comes from the preprocessing. I looked at the HaXe reference on advanced types (http://haxe.org/ref/type_advanced), but I haven't been able to make anything work so far. This probably isn't possible since Graphics is final, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. It seems it would be easy if I could extend Graphics
