ActionScript 3.0 :: GetChildByName Return Null If Public Setting Is Flash 9
Jan 18, 2011
I am facing a weird problem. The following code returns null if targeted player is Flash player 9 but works fine for Flash Player 10.
[Code]...
It works fine if I give a delay using setTimeout. I am not sure what I may be doing wrong. I have attached the source files. (Flash CS5 format)

My application will load an xml file that has the name or id of a UIComponent. Later this will be used to set text or images.
This component could be on a panel or a panel in a panel, I am not familiar with flex but in javascript getElementByid would return the element wherever it is on the document (when called on the document). There is no get....Byid in fex and getChildByName does not look in children.For example
<mx:Text name="works" id="works"></mx:Text> <mx:Panel> <mx:Panel> <mx:Text id="noWorkie" name="noWorkie" text="a test"></mx:Text> </mx:Panel> </mx:Panel>
this.getChildByName("works"); // worksstage.getChildByName("works"); // returns nullthis.getChildByName("noWorkie"); // returns null
Thinking of creating a getElementByid but has to be called from the top element, have no idea what the top element is.
For example this.root does not have a getChildren method to go through nor does stage. Guess I need to find the highest possible Container class starting with this.parent.There must be a "simple" way to do this but all examples I could find would not go from top level to lowest child as javascript would do in document.getElemetByid.

I have just recently started playing around with AS3 and am pretty new to what is going on in Flash (though I do have a lot of programming experience.) I have an object that I am dragging around on the mouse. I want it to be destroyed if I drop it anywhere but in a target location. I have the part where it is destroyed working, but I am running into a problem trying to find the target. When I try the following...
PHP Code:
public function DropObject(){
if (! this.hitTestObject(stage.getChildByName("Target"))){
stage.removeChild(droppedObject);
stage.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE,droppedObject.MouseCursorMove);
}}
I get "TypeError: Error #2007: Parameter hitTestObject must be non-null." So, "getChildByName" is returning null, but I'm not sure why. I've verified that there is an Instance name of the Target on the stage. Why can't I find it?

Seeing as I don't have too much formal education Flash/OOP in general, this is just one of those thing I can't seem to quite deal with gracefully. All I'm trying to do is to be able to load/reset my an instance of my game's main class (not the first class that gets pulled up by Flash, but the one that actually has games logic in it), which of course extends MovieClip. It took me a while before I could even make an instance in it, because it would silently crashed when I would try to do so, and what didn't help was that the output window stopped working, and I had to completely reinstall flash. As far as I remember I simply fixed it by taking out the "stage." from any of the lines of codes that had it.

what I am trying to do is wait for the net connection to return a value before i take that value and put it in a variable.
Code:
ActionScript Code:
import flash.net.*;
var gw:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
[Code]....
The problem is that gw.call(~) calls a php file, and it takes a few seconds for it to return a value.
Error: 1067: Implicit coercion of a value of type void to an unrelated type uint.

I've having a problem when I am removing a child. There is an area where you can choose a button to click(there are multiple buttons here). Once you click a button it loads workss_mc and you can go back from there and workss_mc is being removed then work_mc is being added again. The problem is once it is added again and you click on any of the other buttons the frame label from the previous session when it was clicked is still at that location.

I am trying to create a FLV playback component (in Action Script 3) where the skin hides after the mouse is idle for a certain amount of time. I've read a lot of suggestions to set the skin to null (in action script)
[Code]...
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
As far as I can tell, there is no way to toggle visibility of the skin. The best I can do is turn the SkinBackgroundAlpha to 0, which does remove the background of the skin, but not any of the buttons or bars.

I'm currently trying to build my first flash site.I have just set up the buttons which get to each 'section' via frame labels and the AS3 gotoAndStop function.These work without error until my 'sections' contain movieclips that are referenced in my actionscript layer... Because they do not exist in 'all frames', whenever I click my buttons I get the error, "Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference."It took me a while to understand and track down why I was getting this. I removed the short bit of code in my actionscripts layer that referenced the movieclips in each section (I had some custom scrollbars set up) and it worked without error.

In document class action script file I add a movie clip to stage using
Code:
public var square:Square
square = new Square
addChild(square)
So it adds square to stage.Then after sometime I want it to be removed. I call a function "removeSquare" also located in document class. It executes the following code. And it removes the square from stage visualy.
Code:
trace("proff that it's executed")
removeChild(square)
square = null
Then of course I want to add a square to stage again, using code I written at top of the post. And remove it again, and so on..But game is lagging more and more and more. So I guess that the square is not properly removed. If you need more details about my code feel free to say, I just written that since I really doesn't know what else should be important.

I have many MovieClips and each has a name like "mcDummyClosed" and then and instance name "slideDummyClosed". Another MovieClip has a link to e.g. slideDummyClosed which I then call DummyClosed. I add a MouseEvent.CLICK event to DummyClosed.
Now without adding slideDummyClosed to the stage nor any other MovieClip can I with a string containing it's name get that instance? I've tried using getChildByName() but that only seems to work if I've already added the MC to be found and added before. My code looks something like this:

Lately I've found myself constantly writing removeEventListeners everywhere, which makes code quite messy. I know it's a best practice and such, but in general it has no sense. Garbage collector should handle such a simple task by itself, shouldn't it? Is it that hard to remove all listeners automatically when object is set to null?
So I just want to be sure if that's the case. Does setting an object to null, automatically remove all attached event listeners? In my case scenario is like this - I create an object and attach bunch of event listeners to it, then after a while I need to re-initialize this object. Of course setting this object to null is much easier then unbinding every listener by hand. And on most part listeners are anonymous functions, which means that it's not possible without code refactoring. When I simply re-initialize a variable with new I do not get duplicate listeners and such, but I'm not sure that it's previous value, along with all the listeners gets garbage-collected. Is it?

I have an input TextField and have a KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN even listener on the stage to listen for the Keyboard.ENTER event. The event listener adds the entered text to an array or whatever, and then clears the TextField. The problem is that when the Enter key event fires and the TextField value is set to "", it leaves a carriage return in the TextField and the cursor positioned on the second line. WTF? I've been coding AS2 and AS3 for a LONG time and have never ran into this before.Example:
var myTextArray:Array = new Array();
stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, onKeyDown);
function onKeyDown(e:KeyboardEvent):void{

I seem to be having a recurring problem attaching events to a button i have created within 2 other movieclips.I get the following error:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
So it looks like it can't find the button, in order to attach the event listener. The question is why? I am attaching a similar event to a button on the main timeline and that works fine. So it looks like a scope issue, but I am referring to it properly.
code below:
Code:
import flash.net.navigateToURL;
import flash.net.URLRequest;
import flash.display.*;[code]................

I have an array of temporary objects created in a for loop. The objects are of type class "Tile", a class I created. However, it appears that whenever I create a lot of tiles in the for loop, the program slows down indefinitely.
While the array is whiped at a later trigger point, I am thinking that perhaps these Tile objects are not being erased from memory. They are being created on the fly in a for loop, and the array is being reset to "array = []".
Are the objects still in memory or are they cleaned up when the array is set to []?

I'm trying to declare a movieclip variable in a class by finding the instance name of the movieclip.
On my stage I have a 'Container' (linkage class name) MC, inside that is a 'PlayerInfo' (linkage class name) MC inside that is a 'healthBar_mc' (instance name) MC. healthBar_mc is what I'm trying to access.
the class where I'm trying to run this function is linked to a MC inside 'Container'
So I tried the following code:

I am not sure if this is even possible so this is why I am asking. So you know how we can access a nested movie clip by name with the following code:
mainMC.getChildByName("nameOfMC");
I was wondering if it is possible to do the same thing with XML data. So for exaple:
xmlData.house would be mainMC.getChildByName("house");
(obviously I know that getChildByName doesn't work for XML and am looking for an equivalent command)
